New Danger to Arctic Wildlife, ACT NOW!

KEY SENATORS UNDER PRESSURE TO ALLOW ARCTIC DRILLING!
Twice, the Senate has voted to oppose drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Yet, determined oil drilling supporters continue to look for ways to sneak Arctic Drilling into legislation that anti-drilling senators will have a hard time rejecting. In October and November, for example, pro-drillers have been trying to make drilling part of key energy legislation.

The Arctic Refuge is America's last great wilderness, supporting an abundance of wildlife: polar bears, wolves, musk oxen, caribou and grizzly bears. In addition, the refuge is a stop over point for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds.

Many Senators who have previously voted against drilling in the Arctic are under intense pressure to change their position. Pro-drillers are determined to force arctic drilling through and the energy bill is just one piece of legislation that pro-drillers have attempted to use-- there will certainly be others if this attempt fails.
The pressure on these Senators is mounting, Urge them to stand strong and oppose ANY bill that could allow ANWR drilling!
THE TRUTH ABOUT THE REFUGE:
  • Drilling WILL adversely affect sensitive wildlife that depend on the Refuge for survival!
  • Drilling in the Refuge won't cut prices at the pump! If Arctic drilling is allowed, Americans won't see a drop of Arctic oil for 10 years and then it will only last 6 months.
  • A mere two-mile-per-gallon improvement in auto efficiency would save that same amount of oil in under 3 years, and keep on saving forever!
  • Even the most generous estimate of Refuge oil would still leave the US dependent on foreign oil!
  • Dear Senator,

Please oppose any legislation that could allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).

As you already know, drilling in ANWR will only produce enough oil to satisfy the American oil appetite for a mere six months. Additionally, even if drilling were to start tomorrow, oil industry executives admit that it will take at least ten years for any oil to get to the market.

We are very concerned that passage of any legislation which would set a terrible precedent -- opening up pristine areas across the nation to industry. The Arctic Refuge is clearly the first step for the oil hungry leaders in Congress and the White House. Majority Leader Tom DeLay has admitted that drilling in the Arctic Refuge would be the first step to drilling in pristine lands all over the country (Roll Call, 9/25/03).

According to recent polls, a majority of Americans still oppose drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for many reasons:
National Security: Drilling in the Arctic Refuge threatens national security by increasing our reliance on the 800 mile long, unprotected, Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS).
Wildlife Preservation: The coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is the American Serengeti -- with musk oxen, polar bears, millions of waterfowl, and 129,000 members of the Porcupine Caribou herd. All of these animals rely on the sensitive coastal plain to bear their young.
Wild Land Preservation: Since the creation of the first national parks in the early 1800's, The US has had a long history of setting aside beautiful landscapes to ensure that America's children always have an opportunity to see the "wild" beginnings of America's past.

We also urge you to persuade your fellow Senators to table this issue forever. Senate has already rejected drilling in the Arctic Refuge twice in the last 18 months and shouldn't be forced to vote on this issue a third time.

We should not sacrifice one of country's crown jewels for a few months supply of oil. We can meet our energy needs without destroying our national treasures.

    Sincerely,
    The Undersigned
