HOW YOU CAN HELP:  If you are a U.S. citizen, sign the Project R&R petition today to add your name in support of ending chimpanzee research in the United States. Together, we can secure the release of all chimpanzees remaining in labs into permanent sanctuary.

to manage.

The lives of some 1,300 chimpanzees are depending on us.

additional  information can be found at http://www.neavs.org/ or www.releasechimps.org

Chimpanzees are humankind's closest genetic relative, sharing 96% of our DNA. An estimated 1,300 chimpanzees are currently held in U.S. laboratories, of which some 650 are federally owned.

The time has come for the United States to join the moral and humane community of countries like Great Britain, Austria, Japan, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, and the Balearic Islands have either banned or severely limited the use of chimpanzees and other great apes in research.

We, the undersigned, support the passage of U.S. government legislation to end to the use of chimpanzees, and all great apes, in U.S. research or U.S. funded chimpanzee research anywhere in the world. We strongly support the immediate release of chimpanzees into permanent sanctuary.

Time and time again money is wasted on research on chimpanzees which is not only unethical but provides inconclusive results. Although we share 98% of our DNA with chimpanzees, our closet living relatives, that 2% makes the ways in which our bodies respond diseases like HIV and AIDs very different. Our understanding of these diseases has not and cannot be expanded by research on chimpanzees. Furthermore, these animals are highly intelligent and lead complex social lives, in which they experience pain and fear in the same ways that we humans do. The cruelty and ethically reprehensible nature of scientific research on chimpanzees not to mention the often substandard ways in which these chimpanzees are housed and forced to live out their 50 to 60 year lives, not so much shorter than the average human life was in the recent past, is absolutely disgusting and cannot continue. "In what terms should we think of these beings, nonhuman yet possessing so very many human-like characteristics? How should we treat them? Surely we should treat them with the same consideration and kindness as we show to other humans; and as we recognize human rights, so too should we recognize the rights of the great apes? Yes." - Dr. Jane Goodall

How can we look into the expressive eyes and say that this is ok? This needs to be stopped.

I have worked with chimpanzees in both zoos and research settings for 10 years and strongly believe that it is morally wrong to inflict the kind of suffering on them that invasive medical research unfortunately usually entails. Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives and should not be subject to torture in the name of science. I also feel much sorrow for humans who suffer from HIV, malaria, hepatitis and other diseases that have been researched on using chimpanzees, but I believe it is a failure of our humanity to justify research on one sentient being to supposedly benefit another. In the end, we all lose.

We have been experimenting on primates for years - always to their detriment, and usually to ours. If animals were just like us, primates would die of HIV and dogs could happily chow down on chocolate. Animal testing for human ailments does not work - because animals are not people.

Chimps and humans share 97% genetic material. Using them is like using unwilling human subjects. It reminds me of Nazi Germany. Is that how we wish to be evaluated?
