There is a open 15 acre sewage lagoon that doesn't need to exist because the owner could use the Taos County waste water treatment plant.
His state permit is up for renewal and even though our county land use ordinance specifically prohibits open sewage lagoons we believe the permit might be renewed. The only criteria the state uses to issue the permit is ground water contamination.
We are also concerned about airborne contaminants that have well documented health risks. There are only a few open sewage pits in all of New Mexico, and very few Nationwide because they are an environmental hazard.

The lagoon existed before you decided to move into the area. If you don't like it, sell your property but for God's sake, stop your whining and cease your demands.

Despite the statements to the contrary, this HAS to be a Public Health Issue. When the wind blows across those waves of exposed sewage...the folks downwind are definitely getting a dose of something they didn't bargain for.

Put it closer to the Country Club and use the grey water to continue to green-up the greens.

The county has already effectvely outlawed open sewer lagoons via recent approval of the neighboorhood ordinances. The permit should not be renewed based on new ordinances in place.

As an officer of Las Colonias West Mesa Preservation Assoication, whose territory is across U.S. 64 and quite near the lagoon, I urge the County Commissioners to reject this petition as unwise and unnecessary.

Pllease stop open sewage waste and send it to Taos City/County treatment plants. Thank you!

I fought to close the S&R septic lagoon 5 years ago. I am opposed to the re-permitting of this open septic pond for yet another five years. It's time that all waste in Taos and Taos County be dumped in the Taos City Waste Disposal Plant. It is my understanding that most open septic ponds have been closed throughout most of our nation. It is time that we follow this safe example. It is a health hazard and must be closed.
Thank you.

I live in Indianapolis, but own property in Talpa and plan to move as soon as I can. My doctorate is in public health and this definitely is a public health issue. Open sewage pits should not be allowed and the permit should not be renewed.

As a home owner on Tune Drive this is my endorsment of the protest against the permit renewal of the sewage lagoon in our neighborhood.
This shouldn't be allowed anywhere there is an alternative waste water
treatment plant such as the one we have in Taos.
Besides, we, the neighborhood, made them illegal in the SNA two years ago!
Submitted this Aug. 3, 2008.

Although I currently live in Albuquerque just now for the past five years, I have lived in Taos for most of my life, I own two homes there, and I plan to return there when I retire soon. Open sewer pits are a serious health hazard. Taos may be out of the interstate freeway, somewhat distant from such traveled roads, but that doesn't mean it is out of the loop for responsible community concerns.

It is a complete travesty that open sewage exists in Taos at the moment and might be allowed to continue. I just put in a new septic system for a single person dwelling that took months and months to get the permit for. Not to mention the almost $10,00 price tag. It is inconceivable that, given the tough new regulations for single family homes, that such a blatant disregard for basic health concerns and land contamination might somehow slip through the cracks. Please stop it NOW! Faith Welsh

I am appalled by the mere fact that we are even having a discussion about a sewage lagoon in the year 2008 in the United States! How is this legal??? The health and environmental issues involved should be evident. There is so much at stake here. I will not lend my support to any politician or official who supports this or helps in any way its being approved.
