The state promised Englewood $4,000,000 for school year 2008-2009 budget. The voters approved that budget and the school district implemented the budget. Mid-year without any consultation with the district administration, the Governor cut the allocation by $2,000,000. No other school district in the state has been required to absorb a cut of this magnitude. The Governor%u2019s cut of already certified funds has undermined what the district has done and is doing that benefit our children. We do not want to lose any of this funding. It is unfair! Let us know what you think about this and stand with us to fight for our young people. There can be no more important use for our tax money than our children's education -- for their advancement in life and ultimately, for the benefit of our country. To short change our future citizens cheats everyone! Let's get our priorities in order and restore the educational money that Englewood requires.

This is unfair to the youth of Englewood. Why should their schooling have to suffer. There is no substitute for the value of a good education.

Governer Jon Corzine,
I, like many others, enrolled my children in the Englewood School system because we saw the positive education that the kids would be receiving. The programs implemented by the Englewoood School district have had an extremely positive impact on the children of Englewood. We need to continually challenge our children and raise the bar for them, not lower it. Please think of the future of our children. Education is vital. We cannot cut money that has made significant changes and improvement to the children and our district. We need to continue the positive momentum within the EPSD. By cutting this funding, we will in fact be lowering the bar for the children because without money the district cannot bring in the talented teachers and wonderful programs that our children benefit from now. Respectfully, Ruth Sorbanelli

It is hard to believe that this cut can be done at the expense of children and their future. Governor Corzines should re-examine his position, because by taking on this measure he clearly sends the message that the education of thousands of Englewood children is not important.

Honorable Jon Corzine,
I have two young children who attend Englewood Public Schools (EPSD). My husband and I were told over and over that we were making a huge mistake by sending our boys to public school in the EPSD. We were told the teachers were inadequate, that the schools were falling apart, and that the majority of the pupils came from homes where education is not important. We met other like-minded parents who had children in the EPSD and we learned that some of the rumors were precisely that. We learned about the goals for change and improvements that were to take place in the district. We had our doubts, but we figured if we placed our children in private school (like most other middle-class families in the district), we would be doing a huge disservice to our children and to the community by sending them the wrong message; that message being one of no hope and no faith. We knew we would have to work harder with and for our children, and we have slowly witnessed many improvements in our schools in the last few years. Our boys have had excellent teachers and we are pleased overall with the favorable growth taking place. The funding that was provided by the state was to encourage a continuation of this upswing of positive development. The state promised Englewood $4,000,000 for the '08-'09 school year budget. That funding has now been cut in half. It is necessary that we receive these funds to further the affirmative growth that is occurring in the EPSD. Many families will NOT remain in the district if these funds are not allocated. These funds are absolutely crucial to help all the children in the EPSD prosper through a variety of programs. Not only will our children thrive, but this will also attract optimistic people who believe in progress to our district. Ultimately, this is what we all want and need.
Please reconsider your stand on funding promised to the EPSD.
Respectfully, Phaedra Martin

Governor Jon S. Corzine:
I am a public school advocate and parent of multiple children in the Englewood Public School District (EPSD). In addition to being parents of students in the EPSD, my wife and I are also alumni and current employees of the district. Needless to say, this multigenerational experience with the district allows our household to possess a unique perspective concerning both the contextual past of our educational community and the potential contained in its future provided that certain financial, social, political and cultural capital is acquired. I read that not long ago you: "joined the governors of four other states in urging the federal government to provide $1 trillion in aid to the country's 50 state governments to help pay for education, welfare and infrastructure as states struggle with steep budget deficits amid a deepening recession." This is why I am publicly reaching out to you by signing this petition. In your appeal to the Federal government I personally believe that you have demonstrated an ability to discern the degree to which extrinsic challenges and looming risks will impact education in our state if schools are forced to entertain trudging into the future under funded. In like fashion, my appeal to you is undergirded with great understanding and foresight into the challenges and great losses that Englewood will suffer should this be presented as a “necessary evil”. Governor Corzine, I cast my vote for you because I truly believed that you would seek to model fiscal responsibility and always have New Jersey’s financial well being at the core of your decision making process; I still believe this. As you seek to model this in very trying financial times, please remember that the best investment that leaders can make are into the lives of those who will one day lead us…
Funding is not optional for the Englewood Public School District- it is critical.
Respectfully,
Lamarr Thomas

Honorable John Corzine,
I am a parent of two children in the Englewood Public School District (EPSD). Several years ago my husband and I bought a house here in Englewood. I took a leap of faith and enrolled my children into the public school system here. I believed in the goals that were set forward by Dr. Grieco for EPSD. I have volunteered extensively in the district at various levels and have seen the positive advancement of the students in the district. Each year the quality of the education gets better and has had a positive affect in encouraging middle class families such as my own to keep their children in the district. The money that was provided by the state was to ensure this positive momentum. Parents will not stay in a district that does not have the resources to deal with the various problems that a district like EPSD must tackle daily. The money the state provided was helpful in continuing the programs that are needed here in Englewood to not only focus on the children who are behind, but to also pay attention to the children who are functioning well and who are ahead. Please reconsider your stand on funding the monies promised to EPSD.
Thank you
Sincerely,
Triwa Lee-Chin

The last thing Englewood needs as it continues efforts to reach all children is a $2000000 cut in it's budget. We cannot cut our programs. We need to add to them to meet unmet needs.
