Help the street dogs of Kosovo - Stop the killing

HOW YOU CAN HELP US ....

We will be delivering a petition letter next week (26th April) to Mr Isa Mustafa, Mayor of Prishtina and Mr Agim Gashi, Head of Public Services Department. We need to present as many signatures as possible to show the support we have to stop the killing. The petition letter can be read in the INFO section but is also shown below.

PEITITION LETTER

Dear Mayor, Dear Mr. Gashi,

With this letter we, inhabitants of Pristina, wish to express our concern with the recent shooting of street dogs.

We agree with you that a solution needs to be found to end the sight of starving and unhealthy dogs in the streets of Kosovo, but shooting them does not solve the problem. In fact, it has proven ineffective since the vacuum made is soon filled by dogs from other areas and remaining dogs are encouraged to have more puppies as resources are freed up.

The only way in which a structural solution can be found to end the situation of having street dogs, is to invest in a Trap Neuter Release (TNR) Programme. This would involve the capture of the street dogs in one area, the vaccination and neutering/spaying of the dogs by veterinary staff and the release to the original habitat. All dogs that can be released would be properly tagged and permanently marked in order to prevent their recapture. This is the only proven and humane way to address the problem.

We, therefore, would like to impress upon the Municipality of Kosovo the need to introduce a TNR Programme as soon as possible. Assistance, expertise, and willingness to implement this is present in Kosovo. In fact, it is already being carried out on a small scale by the dog shelter in Sllatina.

All that is now needed is a strategic choice by the Municipality to end the shooting and start working towards a long-lasting solution to the problem of street dogs.
