JUNEAU %u2013 Wildlife officials presented a new protocol to the Board of Game today that would allow Alaska Department of Fish and Game staff to kill young wolf pups in or near their dens as part of the state's predator control programs. This practice, known as %u201Cdenning,%u201D is currently illegal under Alaska state law.

%u201CWe are highly disappointed with the department%u2019s decision to allow denning even if it is limited to department staff. The state%u2019s predator control programs are already viewed as scientifically unsound by the many biologists who have closely examined Alaska%u2019s programs. This move will further tarnish the department%u2019s credibility and hinder conservation efforts in the state,%u201D said Wade Willis, Alaska Representative for Defenders of Wildlife.

The new protocol established by the agency is viewed as the department%u2019s response to the massive public outcry sparked this summer when state officials shot three wolf packs from a helicopter in Unit 9D, then landed and shot 14 orphaned pups in the head at their den sites. To date the department has failed to reveal all of the details of the incident, but given the pups%u2019 ages, Defenders believes that the pups were inside or near their dens when they were killed %u2013 an action that is illegal even for state officials. According to the new protocol, officials will attempt to place the pups in zoos or other wildlife facilities before destroying them.

The unveiling of the controversial protocol comes as the Board of Game also considers proposals submitted by predator control advocates to allow hunters to practice denning. These proposals were first floated last January and March, but the Board of Game chose to table them until after the public voted on the aerial gunning ballot measure. With the defeat of the ballot measure at the August polls, aerial gunning can still be used to kill wolves %u2013 leaving conservationists to wonder why the denning proposals continue to move forward.

The Board will decide on those proposals in the next few days.

%u201CThere%u2019s nothing sportsmanlike about cornering and killing newborn pups, cubs and their parents in their dens when they%u2019re most vulnerable. Wildlife managers should not be conducting predator control efforts after April 30, when wolves are raising their young pups. This is one of the main reasons aerial gunning and other methods are not permitted after this time,%u201D Willis said.

This summer, Alaska wildlife agency personnel reportedly staked out a known wolf denning site %u2013 a practice that is illegal under Alaska law %u2013 and, using helicopters, gunned down 14 adult wolves from the air.

When they landed, they found 14 helpless pups in the nearby dens %u2013 infant wolves just weeks old %u2013 and methodically shot each one in the head. 28 wolves gunned down in all.

Due to a loophole in federal law, Alaska is the only state in the U.S. where a few hunters still use aircraft to shoot wolves or chase them to exhaustion before landing and shooting them point blank. But the practice of "denning" %u2013 the killing of wolf young in the den %u2013 is prohibited even under Alaska law. This killing of 14 wolf pups disturbs even longtime hunters in Alaska.

Dear Governor Palin;
Myself along with everyone who has signed this petition is APPALLED by reports that the Alaska Department of Fish and Game illegally killed 14 or more wolf pups along with countless grown wolves by aerial assault as part of their efforts to to boost the number of Caribou and that they intentionally excluded this information from a press release June 30th. This unacceptable attempt to cover up facts only further discredit's you and diminishes the public's faith & trust in the agency's ability to properly mange these precious wolves and follow the law.
Governor Palin, we urge you to call for a thorough investigation into the June "denning" and killing of these wolf pups in the game Management Unit 9 and insure that any Alaskas Department of Fish and Game employees who acted illegally are brought to justice.
As I understand it, Alaska law "prohibits" the killing of wolf pups from their dens as part of a predator reduction effort.
Can't we offer a section of land for these wolves to ensure their safety and prevent them from entering the endagered or extinction lists.
Wolves play a role in our Environmental well being and since they can not speak for themselves I am THE VOICE OF THE WOLF.

I pray by the power of God Almighty and His son Jesus Christ that Humans are no longer allowed to torture, fight, aerial hunt or inhumanly kill animals of His and Our Earth again! I do not understand why people have to use violence to get their way! I am all for killing animals for food and fur; but to just kill to win a prize is morally wrong. Until we as a Nation Under God decided to take a stand do what is Holy we will never stop suffering all the Wrath's of God's Anger! We need to put God first as a nation and treat all who inhabit the Earth as God would Lead us to through the Holy Spirit! Please help us make a change in the treatment of these wolves lives! Your support and prayers are needed more now than ever! God Bless you and yours!

I would like to think that we had people of some stature representing the people in this country.I am not so sure of this anymore. The people of this great country can't even expect their elected officials to even read the bills and laws they pass so carelessly. When they play around with our freedom and rights they are playing with fire. The people in this country will rise up and take care of the business our representatives should be taking care of.Unfortunatly, the animals in this country don't have the resources to defend themselves as we do. I can only appeal to the people we elect to dig deep inside themselves and do the right thing. Do what we pay you to do. Do what we elected you to do. Protect our interest. Protect our livelyhood. Protect our resources. Protect these animals from our greed. Do you job. Quit taking from the people your were elected to protect. Don't wait until it is to late. Change things around now. Get a backbone. Keith F. Sutherland

Anyone who kills is a murderer and in the end will murder themselves. All people who kill wolfs with a gun are cowards.

I beleive who ever sport kills wolves or their pups should be hunted in the same way. The wolves are very beautiful animals and are given bad names due to a society that loves to see everything destroyed.

I have been in Wildlife conservation for over 50 years and I do not agree with anyone who would sign a bill or make a law that would destroy wildlife in any form, unless absolutely necessary, because they are part of nature as well as we humans. To do so, just for a state income from hunters is obsurd and that person run out of office!!!
