2005 Chevy Cobalt Power Steering Problems

Target:
I want Chevy to do a recall, because the safety of peoples lives is at stake!
Sponsored by:
I am asking that a petition be brought against GM Chevrolet for them to do a recall on their Chevy Cobalt model cars. The Cobalt has an on-going power steering problem that several Cobalt owners have apparently reported. GM Chevrolet should be held liable negligent for any accidents as a result of the power steering problems. Consumers should not have to pay for the repairs when this is clearly a manufacturing problem.

If you agree with this petition, then please sign so that something can be done to resolve this matter before someone seriously gets hurt.

I bought the 2005 Cobalt as my first brand new car in July of 2005. I currently have about 38300 miles on it, however my issues started happening at about 30000 miles. The reason that this problem is so scary is that it is, at least with me, so intermittent. I started with my ABS and TC lights coming on. I took it to the dealer paid them $106.00 to tell me to take my car starter out. I do that, and now I have power steering, low fuel, ABS TC security light and brake lights all flashing on my dashboard, oh yeah and also the strange shifting of the transmission when I have an AUTOMATIC. I have taken it to 4 mechanics including 2 certified chevy dealerships, where they cant seem to find anything wrong. After reading about 25 sites of complaints on this same issue, I think we are in need of a recall. Enough is enough.

I have already had my car in now 2 times since owning 1 1/2 yrs ago for a steering problem, had the column replaced 2 months ago and now have to have done again. I bought a 2007 Cobalt. There is a major issue here with them and the power steering as well. Do something before someone is killed. It is your responsibility GM to recall them and fix.

I have a 2005 Chevy Cobalt that I purchased 4/23/09 and when I purchased it the car had 20,000 miles on it. It now has 30,000 miles and my power steering light came on out of nowhere and has been doing so since then. I am so upset because it's not covered by the warranty according to the dealership. They cover the power steering but not the column which needs to be replaced. I have contacted GM and they dont seem too concerned with the issue. This should be a recall and they know it! What happens when someone kills themselves because the wheel locks up while they are driving which is what it does. You will hear 3 dings and the power steering message is displayed on your screen! The average cost for repair ranges from $600-$1500 dollars and that is just not acceptable nor is it fair! Please let's stick together and make GM responsible they know this is a factory defect and should be held liable!

Just experienced an engine cut out today, after simply making a left turn. Never had a problem before. The Steering simply just failed. I could have been killed in an accident. I am very grateful that I was not on the freeway.

My power steering just froze up for the first time Thursday 11-5-09. The shop I took it to has had it for 2 days and thought they'd fixed it the first day by installing a battery that they thought was causing an imbalance to the electronic sensor in the power steering system. I drove it out, did some errands, and it happened again. Another day in the shop. They now think they might suggest a change-out of the steering column. I called the dealer and he said they have electronic testing equipment that my shop doesn't have and he did not tell me there is a history of this problem.

i am very disappointed in the chev colbolt, i feel like that GM should be asshamed of themselves for getting on national TV and saying the colbolt is a reliable car, i don't even have a 100,000 mi on my car and the power steering is in and out, not speaking of poor paint job, the ignition key that has to be jared to start the car. i feel like i have been robbed by GM and deceived they should be asshamed for sitting up there in their 3 peice suites and lying to the consumer, shame on them living off us hard working people and smiling

My dad bought me the '05 cobalt as my 1st car on 05/'09 n Power Steer flash days after I got the car. I was driving out of my driveway when PS flashed and the steering wheel was ROCK SOLID I couldn't turn, I freaked and left the car outside I called my dad, went back out and drove it in, It felt like I was pulling a million pounds. Im scared of driving it, that it's just parked in the driveway we got it used with 8,000 miles on it So we have no warranty, and I certainly don't have $2,000 to fix it WE NEED A RECALL

My power steering just went out on my 05 Cobalt and continues to go out at random. Of course the warranty is out, but this is a manufacturing problem. There needs to be a recall.

I have a '05 Chevy Cobalt and i find the power steering fails constantly so i've done my best to get used to it since theres no recall. But sometimes you just dont expect it. And its really bad when you're mid-turn and you suddenly lose control. I can't tell you how many crashes i've almost had due to this.

I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt that has an intermittent power steering problem. Out of nowhere the steering went out on a freeway overpass. Thank GOD my husband was driving and had the strength to handle the car. This is a real danger that no one has a clear answer why it's happening.

i have a 2005 chevy cobalt that i got in 06 and last summer my power steering stopped working, i took it to a mechanic and they said it would be around $800 to fix it. i just had my 2nd child so i can't afford to spend that money on my car but i'm worried about my childrens safety when i drive my car. i'm even getting carpel tunnel in my wrists from driving with the wheel this way. i wish that chevy would do something about this and i wish i never bought this car.

I'm a 74 year old with a 2005 chevy cobalt and the power steering goes out anytime it wants. When it does I cant even steer the car. Luckly I havent had any accidents. The chevy dealer told me it could cost up to $800 to fix it!I cant afford that! I thank god that no one has been hurt in an accident due to this problem. That we know of.Chevy should do a recall of this problem before it kills someone.

I have a 2005 Chev Cobalt with only 30,000 miles and my power steering keeps failing on me. I don't have the money to fix this as it is not a cheap repair and I am concerned for the safety of my child whom I take to and from daycare. GM is aware of this issue and should be help accountable!! Along with power steering issues I can not open my car with the key without the alarm system going off.

This is the third time this has happened. It was supposedly fixed under warranty, now it's happened outside of the warranty. Haven't enough people suffered?
