$4.8 billion cut to the California state's public schools

Target:
U.S. House of Representatives, California State Assembly, California State Senate and US Senate
Sponsored by:
Governor Schwarzenegger proposed a suspension of the minimum school funding guarantee, Prop 98. That funding currently constitutes more than 70 percent of total K-12 funding in the state.

Such suspension equals a $4.8 billion cut to the California state's public schools.

Quality education is the most valuable asset for present and future generations. Achieving it requires a strong commitment from everyone, including governments, teachers, parents, community and students themselves.

Prop 98 is a good thing for schools because it makes sure we have increases in funding.  I am in support of keeping Prop 98.

Our school district has already faced enough budget cuts and our childrens education is suffering because of it. By reducing the budget from education, this is a HUGE step in the wrong direction. Cuts need to be taken from other funds. Don't take it away from the education that our future president may be receiving!

Please do not take any more away from our schools. Classes are already overcrowded and teachers do not have the help or resources to help our children achieve. We need to ensure that our future leaders have the education they need to be in a position to further themselves and our world in the future. thanks for listening. Connie Carter

The state of California legislators are voting on massive budget cuts to education in California. They want to raise class size, making it even more difficult to give kids the personal attention that they need. Budget cuts are devistating when a school can even afford BOOKS for the classrooms - this is heartbreaking!

I am flabbergasted that anyone would consider cutting funds to schools. It's the future of our state/nation/world at risk.

I really don't understand what we are thinking taking cutting funds from schools when they are already hurting. In my comunity the majority are going private and home school becuause they don't know which school will close next.

It is shameful that our state ranks among the lowest in per student spending for education. How can we afford to cut such an essential investment in the future? It is just plain wrong.

Our children now and in the future to come will require all of the necessary schooling and more as we are already behind other countries on the academic level as it is. Cutting even the most minial programs could make or break a child's developmental growth! Education is too precious to be without; without it the world will be overrun with poverty. Education is growth and we can not grow without knowledge.

Our children are the future of this country. We should be investing more money in their education not reducing it.

What a joke to cut educational budgets. California is already known to have a horrible educational system and way behind the east coast. Education is a valuable gift and enables a person to make better decisions on every level of their life. Obviously, our youth today need a better education and only proper funding can make that happen!!!

Quality education is extremely important for the future of our state, our country and our world. To cut education funding and deny children the education they deserve in order to offset the state budget deficit is just unconscionable!

What ever happened to the lottery funds that were supposed to go to the schools? Wny would anyone even consider taking money away from kids? What is wrong with our elected officials? The whole system is so screwed up that sometimes, I want to run on a platform of common sense and correct the whole thing. This really burns me up!

Being almost at the last place in the nation when it comes to education budget. California is so rich. Shame, shame shame! Where are your values, Californians? Are your life solely guided by greed and vanity? Shame, shame, shame!

I read once that California had the seventh largest economy in the world. How is it, then, that we are 47th in this country on dollars spent per pupil? With the proposed budget cuts, we will be 50th. Way to go! Don't give me the excuse that it that it costs more to educate kids. It also costs me more at the grocery store and the gas pump. Everybody is paying more for everything. If we are going to be serious about our future, I suggest we spend the tax payers money on important items like educating our kids. Let's make an educators job attractive so we attract the brightest minds to teach our kids. No one with an ounce of intellect would want to teach now when they have witnessed how our teachers are treated. This will leave us scraping the barrel for people to hire as educators that are "settling" for a job. Sounds like a very poor business model if you ask me.

I have a niece and nephew that benefit greatly from the programs currently being offered in Dayton Heights Elementary and Bellevue Elementary School. I have seen some of these programs disappear in the last couple of years and am worried that cutting even more funds will decrease the moral of the students as well as their capacity to have a wider range of curricular activities in their school year.

My husband and I can hardly afford private schools for our two children, but we sacrifice to do so because we know how "stripped down" the public schools have become in terms of extracurricular activities, teachers, and supplies. Thanks to the recent decisions of our governor, there's no way in hell we will consider public schools as an option for our two bright little kids. It's time to get some priorities straight in California.

Cutting the school funding should be last thing to do. California is not on par with most of the other states in US. If the PROP 98 is going to be suspended, then what is the meaning for the voting of Prop 98?.

What ever happened to the lottery money that was suppose to make up the differance in funding for public schools? Is it not enough? What has happened to America? 191 Trillion dollars toward the War effort and years from now when the government decides to investigate where the money went no one will be able to answer that question. Please correct the dollar figure if it is not correct.

With all the taxes we have been paying to the state, the least we can expect is for our children to have a decent public education. There are ways to reduce budget deficit. Cutting school budget is the most short-sighted option, as it will have the longest term of impact on the future of California and our country. Please invest in the future and help the schools by giving the funds they need to educate our kids well.
