Rendering of The Uptown, transforming blight into sustainable growth for the Dity of Indianapolis.

49th and College - Urban Cleanup builds Sustainable Growth

Target:
College Avenue Neighborhood Development Organization
Sponsored by:
PRESERVING AND REVITALIZING OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

College Avenue Neighborhood Development Organization  (A local non-for profit organization) supports the Smart Growth, Mix Use, Live / Work / Walk / Bike / Play / Shop redevelopment planned for 49th and College.

We believe that there is an environmental decay in this crucial block that has limited further development, has contributed to the erosion of the area, and has hampered further connectivity back to downtown.

As a neighborhood association we have requested the City of Indianapolis and the State of Indiana to help our community transform itself from Brown to Green with Economic Redevelopment a priority.

The City of Indianapolis has been supportive and attracted private dollars to invest into the proposed comprehensive plan to assist in leveraging the needed public/private partnership, and we urge the City and State to work with the existing Programs to begin this long-awaited Regional Transportation Oriented Redevelopment, that will create numerous positive opportunities for us all.

The rebuilding of this historic center of our community, the walkable design, commercial district development, and corridor revitalization has the support not only from CAN DO, but also from the Meridian Kessler Neighborhood Association, Harmoni, BRVA, and 12 other neighborhood organizations closer to downtown who affirm their support of these needed public/private partnership investments, helping our city and community grow.

The Uptown Project at 49th and College addresses a wide range of community benefits.
  • clean up toxic commercial site
  • create affordable housing, jobs, and economic development
  • invest in urban infrastructure
  • attract services and create jobs
  • obtain LEED certification
  • develop sustainable models in economics and energy
  • reset the declining demographics of the City of Indianapolis
Smart Growth gives opportunities back to our community and school systems, fights crime, and creates economic development while keeping property taxes lower.

By working with the neighborhood, city planners, state programs, and following the national proven success model for community redevelopment, the strategic assemblage of this important opportunity and location is now awaiting a decision on the completed City application fir the needed funds to begin this project.

Our goal is to provide energy and assist in organizing the community to also produce Infrastructure enhancements, green bio-swells, bicycle lanes, pedestrian ways, & landscaping for the area. Please sign our petition now and be a part of positive change for College Avenue and the City of Indianapolis.

Remind the City and State that a prioritization of sustainable development along traditional commercial corridors is what you want to see.

We need our City of Indianapolis leaders to step forward and invest back into our community with us, assist with the cleanup and do what is necessary to make this opportunity a reality.

These problems are being felt all over the city, but College Avenue has the population density and median incomes that make a minimal public private partnership investment pay off many times back to our governing bodies, especially now with the increase in property, sales,  and income tax.

Breaking through the visual and mental road block that 49th and College will created, opportunities that are major delays, eroding our entire community.   Signing the petition below will show the City that people are truly interested in prioritizing the redevelopment of our walkable community, our neighborhoods, midtown to downtown.

The success of "Rebuilding the Center of our Community" depends on caring people like you to spread the word. Please tell 5 friends about this important issue.

We, the undersigned, request the City of Indianapolis assist the needed public private partnership investments, helping our city grow and ensure Smart Growth success, recreating long term sustainability, by assisting making this long awaited Uptown community redevelopment project a reality.

I am very excited for the potential of this to occur. I think this is a great block of the city to try to reconnect more of south broad ripple to downtown and to futher north in broad ripple. Over the past several years, you can see an extreme decay in this area of town. I would love to see it brought back to life to bring many of broad ripple folks and downtown folks to this area for enjoyment.

Citizen of the area and currently plan to move when my daughter reaches school age in a few years. Seeing the neighborhood becoming a better place to live could change that plan.

We want to see downtown Indy reach it's tipping point capacity for development. Revitalization like this along key arteries between the suburbs and the city is going to be key in pushing people back towards the city centers, making Indy a much better place to live.

We (my two roomies and I) just recently moved into the neighborhood and we see what we like. However, it can be made better. I would like other folks to think so too. This and many other Indianapolis neighborhoods need help in getting back to a truly wonderful place to live. We are willing to help out. Can you help us out?

With exception of the southwest corner of 49th and College, the appearance of this intersection hindered my decision to move into the neighborhood--and I often was discouraged when discussing the location because of its “sketchy” appearance. Much to the dismay of others, I decided to move into a house on Broadway north of 49th and just recently I moved two blocks west of there on 49th. The main thoroughfare should encourage people’s respect of the neighborhood, but as it stands now, it hinders it. I appreciate my neighborhood being one of the "best kept secrets" of Indy, but the neighborhood doesn't need to be a secret anymore. This intersection is vital to the sentiment of the neighborhood and how we choose to live in it. Thank you for encouraging the development of this area.

I am hopeful that the city will help us realize our hopes for the College corridor by getting behind this project. I have rental investments in the neighborhood and am excited to see someone else is willing to reinvest in this area.

Indianapolis Revitalization Starts Here! Our people need to have our corridors cleaned up so our communities have the services and opportunities within the critical walk able mass regional zones, supporting and feeding our City's, State and County. SMART GROWTH saves money by solving a lot of problems for our City and people all at once. Our City can not progress unless we start Smart Growth here and now! Where is our leadership? Where are people who can make the difference, ensuring the success of this needed neighborhood, reconnecting our city, via this stabilization tipping point?

i think that this is a great idea- with some very big IFs. it will be wonderful IF this so called "affordable" housing is really such. it will be tremendous IF instead of just pushing the poor folk out we help them rise above their circumstances. and it would be heavenly IF this and other organizations teamed up with IndyGo to make our city easier to get around. seriously, wouldn't it help the economy and stop crime if more people could afford to get to work? i mean, wow! imagine that! think of how many people live along college ave. and work in broad ripple, at all hours. i work in broad ripple and i sometimes work until four am. i dream of the day there will be affordable public transportation to get me there and back home safely. personally, i don't want a car. i don't like driving and i don't think anyone should have to if they prefer not to. i think it is absolutely ridiculous that we pay in indy the same amount as people do in los angeles, for a bus system that hardly gets you anywhere on time (or if it does, only with transfers and long layovers in between)! that's right, in l.a. it's $60 a month to ride buses and trains; in portland oregon it's about the same price to ride the buses, rails and trolleycars! yet here we pay $60 for long waits, no way of knowing where you are while you're riding other than looking out the windows (at night? hello!) and service that ends much too early and runs much too infrequently. i know, this site and petition are about the neighborhood renovations, but i think our public transportation is a crucial part of that renovation! so yes i sign this petition because i believe in the goal of a green redesign; i just hope the rest of the city follows suit and the people, not the politics, are put first. thank you.

I live at 49th and Guilford and would be delighted to see this development occur, I think it would really help bridge what is happening at 49th and Illinois with 52 and College intersection.

I live in the Oliver Johnson Woods neighborhood just a few blocks south of this proposed development. I believe that this mixed use development would add to the rebound of this intersection, begun earlier with the renovation of the southwest corner of 49th and College and recently continued with the opening of a new restaurant on the southeast corner. This proposal would get rid of a major eyesore on the northwest corner and contribute to the improvement of the immediate neighborhood and the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood as well as assist in the further improvement of the College Avenue corridor. This could serve as a model for redevelopment throughout the City of Indianapolis.

This area is long overdue for revitalization. This development would have great support from the neighbors and would provide added shops, restaurants for the hundreds of people passing by this area each day headed to or from downtown.

I grew up on the southside and still keep that as a base address while I do contracting work all over the country. Someday I hope to settle back in Indy in one of the great urban neighborhoods. This is definitely a step in the right direction for Meridian Kessler and SoBro; I wish you the best and I will continue to keep track of exciting developments throughout the city, no matter how far away I may live.

I recently moved a couple blocks from this project and part of my thinking process in doing so was that this project would hopefully come to fruition. This project seems like a no brainer for government support when someone else has done all the ground work to help out a neighborhood and the city in general. I have my fingers crossed that someone will see how the city and certain areas in general can go one way or another... this project is the direction I would enjoy seeing this city going.
