Steel Coil Bill -- Stricter Laws for Truckers/Trucking Companies Before Someone is Killed

Petition to put the Steel Coil Bills, HB69 and SB129, in the Alabama Legislature's Next Special Sess

Target:
Governor Bob Riley, State of Alabama
This is a petition to request that the Steel Coil Bills, HB69 and SB129, Sponsored by Representative Paul DeMarco, setting forth stricter regulations regarding the securement of metal coils being transported in and through the State of Alabama, be put up for vote in the upcoming Special Session of the Alabama Legislature.  This bill would place stricter regulations on the securement of metal coils, put in place stiffer punishments for violators as well as require more stringent enforcement of these regulations.

This state, and Jefferson County in particular, have been plagued by a series of accidents involving these gigantic metal coils.  It is a miracle that no one has been killed in one of these accidents as of yet.  Unless measures are taken to make the trucking industry more accountable for the way in which they secure these dangerous loads, it is only a matter of time until someone's mom, dad, son or daughter is killed by one of these 2 ton metal coils.  Not to mention the thousands of dollars in tax-payer dollars that has already gone to road repair when one of these coils bounces along the interstates.

This bill has been blocked in the Legislature since February of 2008.  One life is not more valuable than the other.  Send a message to those blocking the passage of this bill.  Let them know where the people of Alabama stand on this issue.

Please sign this petition, sponsored by Representative Paul DeMarco.  This petition will be forwarded to the governor's office on July 14, 2008, before the next special session of the Legislature is scheduled to start.  Make your opinion known, Alabamians!  Thank you for your support.

Dear Governor Riley:

This is a petition to respectfully request that the Steel Coil Bills, HB69 and SB129, Sponsored by Representative Paul DeMarco, setting forth stricter regulations regarding the securement of metal coils being transported in and through the State of Alabama, be put up for vote in the upcoming special session of the Alabama Legislature.  As I'm sure you are aware, this bill would place stricter regulations on the securement of metal coils, put in place stiffer punishments for violators as well as require more stringent enforcement of these regulations.

We are trying to send a message to those blocking the passage of HB69 and/or SB129.  Compromise in the legislature is vital to pass this much-needed bill.  One life is not more valuable than the other.  Please put these bills up for vote during the next special session of the Alabama State Legislature and use all the influence at your disposal to see that it passes.

Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.

One of the coils that fell here on I65, hit an attorney's car with his secretary driving it, in route to the repair shop. He was following her at the time in a second vehicle. Needless to say, it is a miracle she was not killed! Not to say how long it took her to get over the ordeal! I get around or stay away from all 18 wheelers with or without coils because of the problem we have had with these coils being hauled.

I believe that we should do everything possible to keep our highways safe, we should not have to be afraid for our lives as we travel down our Alabama Highways, it is bad enough to worry about drunk drivers and other things we have no control over, this is an accident we can prevent if they are properly secured.
