Target:
This Petition is intended for B.C City Council Members and Policy Makers
Sponsored by:
Love our Environment - Eliminate Pesticides
A Student Initiative from Kwantlen University Environmental Protection
We are members of LEEP - This petition is drafted for the City of Surrey council members and include signatories from Surrey British Columbia and the surrounding communities.
As the signatories, we have read the full petition and fully support LEEP's initiative asking that councillors draft a by-law to fully ban the sale and use of cosmetic pesticides in Surrey, British Columbia
THEREFORE;
We the undersigned respectfully petition the City of Surrey for a complete ban on the use of cosmetic pesticides on all public and privately owned properties. We are concerned about the adverse effects that pesticides and their by-products have on people's health and the environment. In making this application, we do hereby represent that we are of good moral character and are concerned citizens of Surrey or a neighbouring community.

We, the electorates,  request that City councillors use our votes to envoke responsible decisions that protect our communities.

We, the petion signers, would like to present to you at least 10 good reasons why you should support greenLEEP initiatives and adopt a pesticide free City.

1)   Pesticides do not stay in one yard - they contaminate neighboring yards, are washed into storm drains and rivers, and travel as far away as the Arctic.

2)   Exposure to pesticides is increasingly linked by medical authorities to several cancers, and especially leukemia and lymphoma. Pesticide exposure has been proven to be responsible for birth defects and death. In children have been linked to autism, impaired brain development, and lowered IQ, shortened attention span and behavioral problems.

3)   Chemical pesticides accumulate in biological cells, alter DNA and harm the organism. These poisons are passed on from one tropic level to the next. All plants, herbivores, phytoplankton and zooplankton are consumed by humans in the food chain.

4)   Our bodies and especially those of our children are already carrying an unacceptable load of toxic contaminants which are reinforcing each other.

5)   Supporters of a pesticide ban include:
The BC Canadian Cancer Society, The BC Medical Association, The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, The BC  The Registered Nurses Association of BC, The BC Lung Association,  BC Childrens Hospital and several smaller community based groups as well.

6)   The Humane Society of Canada supports a ban on the non-essential use of pesticides, because pets are harmed by Canine Malignant Lymphoma (CML), poisonings and some countries including Germany have banned household pesticides to save the honey bees.

7)   Across Canada, pesticide bylaws already protect 138 communities, including the entire Province of Quebec; and Ontario.

8)   There are healthy, effective and economical lawn and garden care alternatives.

9)   Natural lawn care is cost competitive, and studies done in Halifax, Montreal and Toronto show that employment in the lawn care sector has increased following their pesticide bans.

10)   Bylaws get everyone%u2019s attention and support education in organic lawn and garden maintenance.

I support the ban on cosmetic pesticides. They cause severe health problems and shouldn't be sold if there are safer alternatives available.

I think Ontario's a good example of how the ban would not having a huge impact on the economy. These are products that make people sick, their damaging our health system by being on the market.

I cannot imagine that banning pesticides could harm the economy. It will certainly improve health which is beneficial to the economy.

I feel you should deeply consider the exact reasons behind why so many people have come together on this. Do the repercussions from banning outweigh the repercussions of not banning? In my view, they do not.

As a parent and pet owner I don't want these toxic poisons spread willy-nilly through my neighbourhood.

I am strongly against the use of pesticides for personal property and commercial property use! Medical studies have demonstrated that childhood cancers and pet animal cancers are likely caused by the use of pesticides. Why doesn't the City of Surrey take notice of this information! Stop condoning the poisoning of our planet!
