Billings Artspace Project

Billings Artspace Project seeks to create affordable live/work space for artists in downtown Billings. An Artspace development would also house public space dedicated to sharing arts/culture activities that inspire us all. Such a project would spur community growth and economic development that would benefit the entire city.

We need your help! Tell the City Council you want to see an Artspace project in Billings.

Thank you for your support!

We the undersigned urge the City Council to support an Artspace project in Billings.

Cultural, business, and civic leaders have worked extensively to revitalize and diversify downtown Billings. Today, the heart of our city has seen substantial cultural and historical restoration, and business development has generated a tangible of community pride. The local arts community has played a major part in revitalization. We thank the City Council (past and present) and the many downtown advocates for their vision and guidance towards such positive growth.

To build upon this progress, and expand to a more vibrant, livable, and safe downtown, the Billings Artspace Project will provide 30-45 affordable live / work apartments for not only artists but other community members as well. This project could also possibly include space for the cultural organizations which connect and inspire us.

Billings has been described as one of the top communities in the nation to live, work, and create a business; this project would also showcase Billings as a regional leader for progressive community development through arts and culture. The Billings Artspace Project aims to redevelop existing building square footage or build new on underutilized property downtown, supporting our local artists while adding significant contribution to the city's tax base. This is an unprecedented opportunity which will benefit the city many times over. Many interested community members have been working to improve the vitality and livability of downtown.  The Billings Artspace Project will be a product of this vision.

To date the city has been very supportive and we urge you to move forward in partnership with Artspace to bring this project to fruition. The Downtown and East Billings TIF Districts are currently exploring seed funding mechanisms to bring Artspace to the table. We also ask the city to pitch in any amount, to show good faith to Artspace that our community needs and welcomes this project. Artspace staff have the tools and resources to launch this project to the next level, with an excellent track record for successful completion of over 35 projects across the country. Billings could be next!

Update #16 years ago
Greetings! As you may have heard, Artspace committee members presented to the Billings City Council in March and asked them to act as the fiduciary supporter and invest an initial $500,000 to begin the process of developing an Artspace in Billings. The Council declined to approve our request. However, they advised we seek tax increment funds from the Downtown Billings Partnership. We are presenting to the DBP and need your support. Our next update tomorrow will have details on how you can help!
