Canada Supports the Arts

Target:
Government of Canada

Canadians depend on our artists and their work to tell Canadian stories. Government investment is a crucial element of cultural diplomacy in every developed nation including Canada. The arts contribute to GDP, enhance Canada's international reputation, and make Canada a more innovate and creative country.

The loss of $48.8 million in arts and culture funding is a loss to all Canadians.

We call on the Government of Canada to partner with the arts and culture sector to create new innovative policies and programs, to refine and enhance existing policies and programs and as a minimum commitment to make significant ongoing investments in arts and culture at 2008.2009 levels, through the Canada Council for the Arts, the departments of Canadian Heritage, Finance and Foreign Affairs and International Trade, for the benefit of Canada and Canadians.

A country is just a land mass without its culture and culture goes hand in hand with arts. How can we be Canadian without the arts? If our government doesn't care about the arts, it doesn't care about who we are. It doesn't care about us. A government that doesn't care about it's people should not be allowed to govern. Give us our funding back Mr Harper! Stop trying to cripple our identity!

Art is what creates culture in this great country and helps give people a reason to visit and citizens something to enjoy and be proud of :)

More than warfare, which applies destructive force to achieve a political conviction; and more than industry, which converts people into elements of machinery; the arts is a purely human endeavour. It is as vital to life as is agriculture. it feeds us.

The stats speak for themselves. It is well documented that the arts contribute significantly to the economy. The loss of $48.8 million in arts and culture funding is a loss to all Canadians. I wholeheartedly support the petition "Canada Supports the Arts". Thank you, Ellen MacDonald

I have two kids studying performance acting at Ryerson university. Please do not take away arts funding for them or they will have no acting career as this will impact their schooling. Canada needs to spend more on the arts not less and we do not support spending money on war and killing.

Living in Northwestern Alberta away from any large city can make access to the arts more difficult. For example, in order for our schoolchildren to meet a cross section of writers and illustrators, there are often high travel costs involved. We are very grateful for grants provided by the Canada Council for the Arts, which defray travel costs, enabling us to bring in Canadian Authors and Illustrators like Jean Little, Ian Wallace on a yearly basis. Please do not deprive our children. We need more government support for the arts, not less!!

Do you mean that artists are extraordinary Canadians, Mr.Harper? I should hope so. If not, your statement was offensive and completely, inarguably incorrect.

Mr Harper your political decisions related to Education, Arts and Culture, and the Environment, are a disgrace to Canada. I am truly disappointed with the conservative leadership, not because it cannot do good things, but because Mr. Harper is like a bull in a China shop... making rash decisions that are compromising the true richness of Canada. very sincerely, Severine Minot

I have an 11year old daughter attending school, her passion is playing the violin. She has the priviledge of having an excellent instructor at her local school. I cannot imagine having to inform her that she would lose the chance to play her instrument;or lose the chance to enrich her art experience by attending various functions and field trips. Her life is so very enriched by this experience.

Canada's culture and arts are already nearly non-existent due to the government's inefficient support, do we really want to let the next government destroy it completely by promoting war instead of art? Stephen Harper has said that "art is for the elite" in that case how can we as Canadians expect to ever make ourselves a name in the international community as great artists. If funding is taken from the arts, no one will have the ability to be "elite" in art. Canada's artistic recognition will fall along with its reputation as a peacekeeping nation if funding is put towards weapons and war rather than art and culture. The removal of funding will be a tragic loss to Canada. Support the arts and future performers that will be proud to represent Canada!!!!

Our daughter is at a professional ballet school. This is a huge sacrifice and commitment on our part, as tax paying Canadians. We are contributing not only to her advancement, but to the advancement of ballet as an art form in this Country. Without the Governments support of this important cultural aspect to Canadian society, it puts a lot of stress and burden onto our family emotionally and financially. We deserve to be supported in all aspects of our life. We are hard working and loyal Canadians and we strive for our children to continue their Canadian heritage in the same fashion - no matter what their talents and interests.

Our musicians, filmmakers, writers and visual artists are the ones pushing boundaries at the top of their fields. But for younger artists following their lead, Stephen Harper’s funding cuts and gag laws have thrown up new barriers. Arts and culture are the bedrock of our identity. Museums and festivals teach us about our diverse heritage. Cultural creators of all sorts help us build on that and explore new directions. And how many of these Canadian voices could have developed without vital programs and institutions like the CBC, PromArt and Telefilm Canada? I want art as part of my culture!

The Arts allow us as citizens to express our voice, our thought, and our contribution to culture within society. To deny this from of passion, is just shy of denying a human right to be heard. The arts encourage us to see perspectives beyond our own and find ourselves in the world among other faiths, beliefs, and yes, governments. To allow us, as open-minded, caring, and compassionate citizens to find an artistic place in our world can only be cause for celebration and a true recognition of progress in our society.
