Youth sports is more than a game; it's a course in life's most valuable lessons. Kids who play sports are more likely to attend college, often land jobs with more responsibility and greater pay, and less apt to engage in gangs or drug or alcohol abuse. Yet, 20 million young Americans don't reap this benefit because without coaches there are no youth sports. It's time we recognize those who Play It Forward and encourage more to do the same so we can bring real change to our communities.
We need 100 representatives between now and August to co-sponsor the resolution to bring it to a vote. ONE MINUTE of your time can make a huge difference -- urge your Representative to sponsor National Coach Appreciation Week and let children realize their full potential now!

Dear Representative,
I urge you to sponsor HRES 6 IH and observe September 13-19, 2009 as National Coach Appreciation Week.
Studies prove that children who participate in organized sports are higher achievers with better grades and lower school dropout rates; they are more likely to attend college and land jobs with more responsibility and greater pay.
Yet for the nearly 42 million American children who participate in organized sports each year and reap this benefit, there are another 20 million children who lack the opportunity due in part to a lack of coaches.
With school dropout rates approaching 50 percent in many urban school districts and a reported one million youth involved in gang activity, we cannot afford to stand by. We know organized youth sports can help curb these figures.
We need to honor our nation's coaches and encourage more adults to step up and volunteer.

Please support HRES 6 IH and help children realize their full potential.
We signed the "Play it Forward: Say YES to Coach Appreciation Week!" petition!

Coaches often make extra effort for athletes by going beyond what they are paid (if at all), time alloted, and resources given! Please honor them for their positive efforts.

My father was a football, softball, basketball, golf, and tennis coach for 30 years at the high school and then the college level. I am constantly approached by his former students who tell me what a significant and positive impact my father had in their lives as their coach.

Volunteer coaches are definately the backbone of our youth athletic programs. They have so much influence on each youth they encounter in our program.

Volunteer youth coaches who are properly trained can have a tremendous impact on the youth they interact with. Leagues cannot exist without dedicated coaches who lead and guide children and their parents.

I have been caching for 7 or 8 years in various sports and I know how important our role is in a kids life. Sometimes as coaches we dont always get the thank you or we appreciate you and it can be very discouraging. Maybe something this will help people understand what kind of part we play and make other coaches step up to the next level.

I have been coaching for many years and as volunteers we never get any recognition! So I think this will be a great way to acknowledge all the effortless work being done by all volunteers.

There are emotional barriers that make it difficult for a parent to do what a great coach can do. Case and point Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana is regarded as one of the best to ever play his position in the history of the NFL. Joe's son has a quarterback coach. Why? Someone outside of the immidiate family structure can communicate on a different level with their athletes. Thanks to all the coaches who care!

Now that I am an adult and a parent, I realize how difficult it is to find the time to devote to coaching. It is that much more difficult to find someone who has the passion to become a good developmental coach for kids, let alone a great one. In looking back on my experience growing up and playing youth sports, its no understatement to say that all my coaches changed my life for the better. Its important to give recognition to past coaches for all the good we gained from them, which we can now pass on to our kids... and recognition for everything that our children will gain from their coaches to keep the cycle of personal and community growth going.

My appreciate all of youth soccer, basketball, and track coaches for teaching to never give up and to always give my all. I especially appreciate my High School Soccer coach, who was not only a coach, but a friend. He gave me my first coaching job. Thanks Pat.

Coaches can and have made life long impacts on the kids they have coached. Its not just the fundamentals of the game that they teach but it is the fundamentals of life:dealing properly with others, good attitude, doing one's best, confidence building and so much more.

I strongly support HRES6. Coaching is one of the best parts of my life. My entire family has been involved for more than 11 years. It is a challenge to recruit new coaches and HRES6 is one more way to show how much we value those who give their time to help shape a better life for our youth.

From baseball to tennis - my best coaches all encouraged me to embrace the same core principals: concentration, discipline, respect, and hard work. I am eternally grateful for these wonderful skills that I strive to apply to every situation I encounter in my life. Thanks Coach!

I lead an network of coaches/program coordinators, I see the hard work they do and how it betters the lives of their youth. They deserve at least a day.

Coaches play an important role is kids' lives. Many do so on a volunteer basis without asking for any kind of recognition. This is a great way to let all coaches know how valued they are in our communities.
