Studies show that continuity of care is key in the quality of life for Seniors and the Disabled. The demand for quality in-home healthcare providers is growing exponentially: a demand that cannot be met on sub-standard salaries paid out to the hands-on providers. Agencies for home healthcare workers take up to 50% of the money the client pays out- money that they would rather spend on their own direct care.
Babysitters became legitimized when they all became independent business owners. Licensed daycare providers are given oversight and training opportunity by the health department in their respective counties. They also provide a central repository access point where those in need can find a list of providers in which to choose.
Home Healthcare Providers could have the same opportunity to be independent business owners. Oversight could be provided in the same way that a daycare provider has, either from a new division in the Health Department or Department of Aging. Business ownership provides accountability for ones own success, encourages less turnover for clients *read, better care*, provides stable, sustainable pay for workers, and flexibility to choose.
The taxpayer may ask "how will this save me money?". Less turnover means better continuity of care *fewer bedsores, less incontinence, fewer medication errors, less hospitalization*, longer ability to stay in the home over an expensive long-term care facility, less chance of theft and abuse, and fewer workers relying on public assistance. All things that eventually comes out of the taxpayer's pocket.
I have spoken to lawmakers, workers, and clients who already think this is a great idea, they only ask that we bring more support to the table. Join us in this venture and together we can bring clients and workers together in a marriage that is mutually beneficial.

Dear Home Health Care Provider, Client, Family Member, or Taxpayer:
Kansas Home Healthcare Workers for Independence is asking for your signature to be presented to lawmakers. This petition would enable home healthcare workers to become independent business owners. It also serves a dual purpose: beneficial to those who need in- home care and is cost effective to taxpayers as well. Most of us have someone we know and love who is disabled or elderly who may need these services. Please read the petition and pass it on.
Thank you for taking the time to help enact this important change to reflect our population's needs.
We signed the "Home Healthcare Workers UNITE for Independence" petition!

I have in-home care and it has made my life manageable. Now, our governer wants to cut In Home Supportive Services to our state to "save money", without even one study to determine how this will affect the rest of the state services. Approximately 200,000 state home care workers will lose their jobs and over that amount will be left abandoned and isolated. The cutting of IHSS is going to end up costing California in ways the legislators are going to rue. Go, Kansas, Unite!

I was a caregiver for 14 years. First for my wife, and after her death, for a friend with Chronic-Progressive MS.
