A Tale of a White Knight

In days of old, a white knight was regarded as a savior, a rescuing hero. A white knight expects nothing in return for his deeds. A white knight gives wholeheartedly, knowing that giving is it's own reward. And now, a tale of a present day White Knight.

Please allow us to introduce you to Knight, a handsome white American Bulldog/Pit Bull mix that is currently housed at Harvest Hills Animal Shelter in Fryeburg, Maine.   The dedicated staff members, volunteers, and friends of Harvest Hills Animal Shelter have found this dog to be an absolute pleasure.  Knight has been a friendly, playful goofball during playtime,  but he is desperate to be with people all the time, pining away in his solitude. He cries for company when he is outside in an exercise kennel. He rolls onto his back for a belly rub.  He longs to be loved, and to share his love and loyalty with someone.  Sadly, the future of Knight's life is now hanging in limbo, pending the outcome of a court hearing on Tuesday, April 22nd,  2008.   Continue reading to learn how Knight has found himself in this predicament.

Knight was owned by a convicted felon.  He had been picked up by Animal Control several times in the past for running at large, but had never shown aggression towards them, nor does he have a previous bite history that we are aware of.

Knight is at a high risk of being put to death because his irresponsible criminal owner commanded him to attack a sheriff that was  approaching their home to serve paperwork.  Knight listened to his owner and did as he was told. He attacked on command, and stopped when his owner stopped him.  This dog was trained to do as he was told, and acted upon the wishes of his owner.  Without hesitation or reservation, he did that which would please his owner. The officer was able to drive himself to the hospital, where he was treated and released for injuries to his legs. Loyalty, dedication and obedience are all traits that we value in our personal pets.  We are not asking you to agree with training a dog to attack, but only to recognize that this dog was doing AS HE WAS TOLD. We do not agree with the action that was taken, but we are placing the blame where it needs to be placed, with the owner.

Knight was recently evaluated by a respected dog trainer who specializes in training canines for police work, search and rescue,  and  protection.  The entire evaluation session was filmed and Knight passed every test with flying colors.  The trainer himself is ready to go to court (with the tape) to fight for Knight and has committed to finding appropriate placement for Knight if he is allowed to live.   Unfortunately, if Knight is deemed a vicious dog (this idea is so ridiculous, it is almost hard to write), he may be put to death shortly after the court case is heard.  We are asking that you, a person who can tell the difference between a vicious dog and a trained, obedient dog that does as it is told,  please sign this petition choosing life for Knight. Please sign it, then forward the link along to other intelligent people who realize that dogs cannot, and should not, be blamed for the irresponsible behavior of a human.  Consider this: if a police officer orders his K9 to attack in order to stop a criminal or for protection,  the dog is a hero (as he should be).   A police dog does as he is told, when he is told, and is allowed to live with his handler, often times in homes with children.  But Knight, out of loyalty and an aim to please his owner, essentially did the same thing as a police dog would do, but he may be put to death because of it.  Knight's attack was on command, not a spontaneous act.  If Knight were a dog to fear, we would have heard about him long before this incident and he probably would have been put down already.  Many people (including the ACO who picked him up the night of the incident, staff members at Harvest Hills, volunteers, and the trainer) have met Knight and have come to the same conclusion, he is not a vicious dog and he deserves to live.  Knight could surely live out his life with a responsible, dog knowledgeable owner, ideally as a working partner with law enforcement.  What a delicious twist of fate that could be. Justice needs to be served, and someone needs to pay for this deed.  But not the dog.   Allow Knight the opportunity to serve our officers. Allow him to give wholeheartedly of himself to a cause that is worthy of such devotion. Your signature is needed to help save our White Knight. Please sign right away.  The court case is being held on Tuesday, April 22nd.

We, the undersigned, feel that this dog deserves to live. We would like you to allow him to be placed in a training/working environment where he can thrive as a well trained, obedient partner. Knight has proven to all that have worked with him that he is a non-aggressive, non-threatening and well balanced, social dog. It is not his fault that he was owned by someone who did not have a clear concept of right and wrong. He can be trained to do the right thing.
Please make sure you do the right thing for him.

Thank you for your consideration and compassion.

No one deserves to die for doing what they were trained to do. Animals do not have the sense of right and wrong as we do, and he should not be held accountable for his masters terrible judgement.

He is a Precious & innocent creation of God who with his UNCONDITIONAL LOVE was obeying what his OWNER wanted , just as a loyal police dog would do or any family pet for that matter . It is NOT his fault that his owner is BAD . Knight DESERVES TO LIVE so he can love & be loved as he WANTS to do . He is a GOOD DOG and DOES NOT DESERVE TO DIE !

Please allow Knight to go to a responsible person who will train him to help people. His currrent caretakers are experienced in placing animals like Knight in proper situations and will not allow him to be victimized again at the hands of an irresponsible violent person. This dog is a victim not a villian. The fact that the dog did the biting on command and stopped on command means that the dog is highly trainable and obedient to his trainer/master. This is not a dog that has attacked out of control without being asked to do so. We do not know what cruelties that this poor dog has been through to do what his horrible former owner made him do. There are many people who love this dog and do rescue work for other animals. They see the worst in people and the best in animals every day. To someone who does not have day to day contact with this dog, putting him to sleep may be as easy as signing a paper. But keeping this dog alive means more than just saving Knight's life, it means that all the work these rescuers have done has not been all for nothing. Many people will be deeply hurt if anything should happen to this dog, and as a former shelter volunteer I have seen many people become very depressed and burned out when injustice happens to animals they have worked so hard to rehabilitate or find homes for. We need more people like them, and we need to keep their morale up, especailly these days when so very many animals are dumped without a second thought, or abandoned in forclosed homes, all of which is becoming increasingly common these days. We need people with big hearts for animals to stay positive and not quit doing their very important work. We need dogs like Knight to be allowed to become the good canine citizens they are capable of. Please find it on your heart to let these rescuers complete their mission and find Knight a place in this world where he can really shine.

Please don't sentence this dog to death for simply obeying the wishes of his owner. The fact that he has so swimmingly passed his temperament test speaks to the fact that he is no threat to the public. Don't punish him for the irreponsible behavior of people.

This dog is obviously people friendly . Why does he have to die because a bad person owned. That is like MURDERING MILLIONS OF JEWS BECAUES THEY WERE JEWS AND FRIENDS OF GODOR MURDERING A CHILD FOR SOME HIS OR HER PARENTS DID> this is a very unjust sick mentality. Let this dog be adopted out and make a bad situation turn for the good. Thanks

More human as well as animal intelligence is needed in this world. Let Knight live, isn't this the kind of loyalty we expect of our soldiers who are blindly told to kill in war but come home and leave that all behind. This is Knight! His battles are over!

Given the right circumstances and responsible owner ~ i have no doubt that "Knight" this remarkable dog will most likely go on to save a life or possibly many - his only desire is to please, love and be loved - WHY??? would anyone consider punishing, let alone killing such an incredible dog! I don't often sign any types of petitions, however, as the case has been presented here, I couldn't help but be a part of the request to keep this dog alive. Maybe there are dogs that are troublesome, but just like people, I think there needs to be room for a case by case assessment. I know that as a responsible person who upholds the law, you will likely see room for a way to keep this dog alive, should there seem to be a good cause to do so once all of the facts are weighed.

Please don't let the negative image of pit bulls in this society affect your decision. Pit Bulls are very sweet creatures and deserve the love, compassion, protection and respect that you would give your own child. Knight deserves a second chance. Place the blame where it belongs, with the owner.

Please save Knight. Its not his fault. He is a beautiful baby that doesnt deserve to be put to death. I wish I could adopt him myself. He deserves to have a family to love and cherish him like he should have been done in the first place. His owner should be punished for what he has done to the fate of this beautiful dog. This story is so sad I could cry. The dog is innocent, the owner-guilty!!! I beg of you to think of this baby boy who deserves the best and SAVE KNIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!
