Mandatory Certification for Central Services Technicians

Mandatory Certification for Central Services Technicians

Target:
Citizens interested in Healthcare
Currently in NY anyone without previous training or knowledge can be hired to decontaminate, assemble and sterilize surgical instruments.  As a result, surgical instrumentation improperly cleaned may potentially be given to the surgeon to perform surgery causing surgical site infections and/or detrimental outcomes to the patient.  NY has a legislative bill in the Assembly A01014 and in the Senate S3737 which will require individuals involved in this process to have formal education, certification and therefore license through the State. Stop healthcare providers  from giving below standard quality service by hiring non qualified individuals.  For more information http://www.nycentralservice.org/lobbyingday.html

We the undersigned have been lobbying for changes requiring formal education and training for individuals who are involved in the preparation and sterilization of surgical instruments.  As receivers of medical services we deserve the best by healthcare professionals of all trades. Petitioning our Legislators to pass into law a bill requiring licensing to perform this job will ensure that the outcome of patient care is not negative. Thank you for taking your time to read this petition, sign it and pass it on to others.

It is essential to ensure that staff working in sterile services are qualified. It is only through a level of knowledge and understanding that ensures a safe service for the patient.

Qualifications bring recognition of the speciality and supports good practice.

I see the importance of providing quality instrumentation for patients to prevent the risk of surgical site infections and other infections from patient equipment. It is extremely important that persons sterilizing and reprocessing patient care instruments and equipment be certified in their field to insure that these tasks will be done properly

The state of New Jersey has required certification of these important positions for several years now- New York must respond to this.

As a CS manager, with an active CRCST status for the past 19 years, I am 100% in favor of the Mandatory Certification. Mainly, to ensure that every member of the CS workforce possess the required technical knowledge and capability to perform all tasks involved in the CS field, with strong consideration on the patient's well-being and safety. And also, to have that much-anticipated recognition everyone in the CS field been longing for, all these years. It's about time....and the time is NOW!

I have been employed at a local hospital for over 25 years. I am currently the trainer in my department, and I have seen many people come and go. It currently takes 3-4 months to properly train an individual that is coming into the department with no experience. Many mistakes are made in the process. This could all be avoided if mandatory certification is required. Please help!
