Expanding Michigan's Bottle Bill

Expanding Michigan's Bottle Bill

Target:
State of Michigan Legislators
Thanks to the effort of MUCC and conservationists throughout the state,
the Michigan "Bottle Bill" (Initiatied Law 1 of 1976, MCL 445.571-576)
was passed in 1976.  This law placed a deposit on pop and beer
cans/bottles.  The law has produced dramatic results.  Ninety-seven
percent of all pop and beer cans/ bottles are recycled in Michigan
because of our high redemption rates.  Beer and pop cans have
disappeared from our roadsides, rivers and streams.  New jobs have
been produced and energy has been saved.

It is time for another citizen effort to add water and other
non-carbonated beverages to the Bottle Law.

I recently moved to Washtenaw County, MI from another state that does not have a bottle law. I am pleased that Michigan citizens and conservation groups work with legistlators to conserve and protect our beautiful resources.

Society has changed their habits the past 30 years. Today water and sport drinks are very popular. Unfortunately the bottles do not always make it into the trash. The original Bill did a great service at keeping Michigan clean of soda cans and bottles. This expansion is needed.

Ten cents is still enough to motivate us to pick up the bottle and return it to the store. The bottle bill was always about not littering, never about recycling. I am a resident of Ingham county, zip code 48842

Glad to see that Michigan has done well with the bottle bill for the past few years. Now is a good time to expand the bill to help keep Michigan a beautiful State that it is. Past resident of Wayne county.

I am proud to be a citizen of Michigan. This is mainly because we are in the forefront of environmental action. We need to expand our bottle law to include all types of bottles to keep them out of the landfill and off our roads. I can immediately tell when I am on the interstate if I have driven into a state that has no bottle law, because their roads are littered with bottles. Let us be responsible citizens and good to our planet. Think globally, act locally. Thank you.

I am on the road a lot and see all the water bottles on the road. How sad they are there. We need this bill to pass to clean up the state and to save our natural resources.

Regardless of the substance inside, a bottle can be recycled and reused in a proactive manner rather than contributing to the ever growing landfills.

Plastic trash is becoming a huge problem - I think this bill would be an important step in combating some of this waste.
