I join the Michigan Complete Streets Coalition in support of statewide Complete Streets policies that require state and local road agencies to design and maintain roadways for all users, of all ages and abilities.

The streets of our cities and towns are an important part of the livability of our communities. They ought to be designed for everyone, whether young or old, motorist or bicyclist, walker or wheelchair user, bus rider or shopkeeper. It is time that our state's transportation planning agencies - including the Michigan Department of Transportation, metropolitan planning organizations, local road agencies, and local arms of government - Complete Streets policies and build a safer, cleaner, more sustainable transportation system.

The condition of the streets and county roads is critical to safety of Michigan cyclists and pedestrians. Obesity in this state in particular is at epidemic proportions and making roads more accessible to riders and walkers is a necessary prerequisite to addressing this major public health problem.

I try and walk or bicycle to work and to run my errands, so complete streets is a safety issue for me.

More bicycle-friendly streets are a win-win for everyone. It will encourage more cyclists to get out and ride, and will increase cycling awareness for everyone else.

When I ride my bicycle, I am always careful and aware of my surroundings. However, many automobile and truck drivers do not pay attention to their surroundings. I have had many near misses and would prefer the streets be made safe for everyone. Riding the sidewalk is not an option.

because we have problems as a country. Global warming, obesity, and congestion. Using a bicycle, or walking, attack all of these issues. the biggest reason people don't commute or use their bikes is because it is dangerous when there is no room for bikes and peds.

My husband would ride his moped to work in the neighboring town, saving us money on gas and saving some carbon emissions for the environment. However, it's a Michigan highway through the country, with narrow shoulders. While mopeds are allowed on the road, they have a speed limit of 45 mph. With cars and trucks speeding along at 60 or faster, it's dangerous. As a school teacher, he would also leave before dawn, which only increases the problems. The people of Michigan want to use safe, efficient alternative transportation. Without making an effort to improve roads, any support from the legislature would only be lip service.

While most seasoned bicyclists use proper road etiquette, most motorists are frustrated with riders on the roads. If the shoulders of the roads were better paved for bicyclists, there would be more room to "share the road" and hopefully, in turn, minimize the risk of road rage and/or accidents.

Complete streets are important to me because I am a walker and a bicyclist also at the end of our street is a school for which there are no sidewalks on either side of the road and there are motorists continually speeding down the road.

I bike and walk a lot. The roads are not safe for bikes due to the narrowness or unavailability of bike lanes. This is a safety issue for bicyclists and pedestrians. Please act. Thank you

I am a biclylist commuter and some roads are very unsafe for me. I think it would benefit the environment if more roads were made safe for bicyclists therefore allowing more people to utilize their bike as a means of transportation. This is especially important in rural michigan where some 2 lane roads are barely big enough for 2 cars let alone pedistrians or biclyclists.

I believe there must be space allotted for the safe use of bicycles on our michigan roads for commuting and recreation. This will give us all more options to travel throughout our beautiful state. It will also encourage tourism, and save gasoline for those who chose to commute via bicycle!

Complete Streets are important to me because cycling is the main method I use to get around, and Michigan streets and roads are mainly designed for cars, making it extremely hazardous for walkers, cyclists, seniors trying to the cross street, people in wheel chains, motorcyclists. And many motorists have come to believe that the road belongs only to them and everyone else needs to get out of their way. This attitude needs to change through driver education, and learning that cyclists, motorized wheel chairs, and others have a legal right to use the roads also. It's the law. But, designing the streets for everyone's use will be a big step forward in making the streets usable for everyone and reducing the casualties caused by negligent motorists.

Biking is a wonderful form of transportation, and exercise! But most Michigan roads are too narrow and hazardous to ride, and most drivers are too disrespectful & rude to bikers! The roads need to be constructed so all can use them safely without fear of risking life and limb!

The roads are terrible, it's hard on our cars anour roads are a joke to out-of-towners. When I travel, I am always amazed by the roadways in other states... if they can do it so can we!

I have been a bike commuter for many years now. I believe the poor design and maintenance of Michigan roads makes bike commuting too intimidating for all but the most determined riders. Car / bike conflicts are almost unavoidable given the lack of bike-lanes or paved shoulders, not to mention hazardous storm-drains, pot-holes etc. It's almost funny that a law was passed allowing Michigan to levy a fine on motorists who hit a cyclist, when the States roads are such a contributing factor.
# 266:
6:39 pm PDT, Aug 18, Rick Lutke, Michigan
I believe that both the drivers and I are more relaxed when sharing a road that is clearly marked with a bike lane. More bike lanes will bring out more cyclist. More people regularly exercising has to help our communities.

We need complete streets so there isn't the ridiculous line of idling vehicles waiting to pick up kids after school who could be riding bikes and getting some exercise! Also, so people can run errands, ride to work, go to events etc. without having to use vehicles, to lessen global warming pollution... the list is endless....

Sustaining our environment for safe bike riding means putting an effort into maintaining our bike routes and roads. Biking is becoming the next means of transportation for many, not only as a way to help reduce our air emissions but also to keep fit. It is imperative that we keep our bike routes sound and make it safe for all bicyclists to be able to enjoy their ride wherever they may be commuting to for work or leisure.
