Peanut Criminals Should Be in Jam...

Recognizing that we cannot protect ourselves or our loved ones from threats of death and illnesses from the foods we buy, such as the latest with the peanut butter, we need to stand together to ask Congress to do it. The agencies supposed to help protect us from unscrupulous companies have failed us again. The fact that a company knowingly shipped 32 truckloads of salmonella contaminated peanut butter to the USDA for use in the Free Lunch Programs makes us all aware of the unknown risks we face everytime we eat.

We need to insist that Congress do everything within its power, including assigning independent inspectors, investigatiors and council, to ensure that those responsible through actions and inactions contributing to the known 8 deaths and over 600 illness related to the shipment of contaminated peanut products be held accountable and prosecuted without delay to the fullest extent of our laws. We need to demand that if existing laws are inadequate, Congress change them immediately. The people who made the decisions to ship the peanut products knowing they were contaminated with salmonella are no less guilty of homicide than is the drunk driver who kills through his or her choice to drink and drive. It is time companies know that we are "fed up." We the undersigned are very concerned that more needs to be done to protect our children, our elderly, and every one of us from the increasing risks related to food born contaminants that lead to illness and death. We can do little to protect ourselves from situations such as the latest peanut contamination caused deaths and illnesses. The threat is ever present in our lives as it is in yours. This time the product was used shamelessly for poor children%u2019s free lunch programs. Next time the threat could be for any of us, our children and our elderly.

As our representatives you can do what we cannot. You can take action to ensure justice for those who suffered and died this time. You can be sure that those responsible for this latest crime against the innocent are duly investigated, charged and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the laws. You can protect us in the future. You can change the laws, increase funding and demand accountability of the agencies responsible for inspecting and protecting our food supplies.

We thank you for reading this letter, count on you treating this issue with at least the same determination to protect us that you have shown in protecting us from other major threats against our health and well-being.
