TO THE NZ MUSIC AWARDS COMMITTEE!

- recipient: To get Metal recognised as it's OWN GENRE at The NZ Music Awards - it's is currently eligible under the ROCK Category... They are two VERY different genres!
We have all heard the arguments about why METAL isn't big in NZ (according to Mainstream commentators) but what most of them have failed to notice (or maybe have chosen to ignore) is that METAL is slowly getting bigger in NZ. We have now developed a 'scene' with at least one live METAL gig happening in any city in NZ at any given week.
We the undersigned,
Think that the NZ Music Awards should include METAL in the awards as it's OWN GENRE. Over the last year or two there has been a steady increase in the number of METAL Radio shows, ALL of which feature different KIWI METAL bands each week! The longest running METAL show in NZ has been going since 1987! Which of course is The Axe Attack on The Rock. Here is a list of ALL the other METAL Radio Shows, TV shows and Blogs available to the average Metaler:

As well as many more that I haven't come across as yet.
If you research some of these stations further, many of them have only started in the last two years. This is because people want to hear MORE METAL on the radio and see it on TV.
METAL isn't excluded from all award shows however. Juice TV run an annual competition for the best music video over a large range of genres. METAL was included for the first time last year (2010) Juice TV Managing Director Dan Wrightson says "The Juice TV Awards are a one of a kind in New Zealand because they allow the fans, rather than the music industry, to decide on who wins each award category.... In Dec last year an independent review was done on NZ on Air (View full article here http://www.nzonair.govt.nz/media/51557/caddick%20report%20final.pdf) whilst this is a different body to the Awards it emphasis's the fact that the people up the top of NZ Music are out of touch with what the people want and this is relevant when it comes to the Awards also. An example :
* NZ on Air is not keeping pace with changes in the industry.
* The single-minded focus of supporting music for commercial radio audiences is crowding out some more cutting-edge and potentially popular music.

There is alot more music than what is represented in the Awards currently. While METAL may not earn the big bucks that the other mainstream artists earn the fan's are a lot more dedicated.
