Petition to rename Madison East Side High School

Target:
The Madison Metropolitan School Board
This petition is intended to get the Madison Metropolitan School District to rename Madison East Side High School: Milton L. McPike East Side High School.
You cannot talk about Madison East High School without talking about Milton McPike. The two are synonymous. Mr. McPike created an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding amongst people from all backgrounds and directed them toward achievement and success. Mr. McPike was more than a principal, he was a father figure, and a friend to generations of east side students and families.

We the undersigned wish to honor Milton McPike because for the past three decades he served Madison's young people and was committed to influencing our greater community. Through his force of personality Mr. McPike created a community of teachers, students, and parents at East High School and made it his life's work to affect change, inspire, and instill a resounding sense of pride in each and everyone that he knew. Those of us who were lucky enough to know Mr. McPike will live our lives honoring his memory, and those students who unfortunately will never personally know Milton McPike, can be inspired by learning in a building named for him which honors his legacy.

I feel Milt McPike made th most significant changes that occurred at East. He deserves to be imortalized by re-naming the school after him. We are a 3-generation East graduate family. My Mom graduated in 1951 or '52, I graduated in 1974, my daughters in 1997 and 2001. My Grandfather worked on the old tile water fountain areas and bathroom tiles at East, in addition to the once East High Football field, Breese Stevens Field. "Uncle Milty" deserves such a recognition, without a doubt. I do feel that the word "East" should be kept in the name. When Madison outgrew the one highschool, Central, East and West High were built. East is an eastside landmark, and the addition of his name would be a great honorarium.

Mr. McPike MADE East High what it is today... that man made people see light at the end of the tunnel, he gave hope, he NEVER gave up on his kids, and when you pushed... he pushed HARDER. Re-Naming East after Mr. McPike is SO minute considering HOW much he has changed the feel of this community and more. There truly is NOTHING anyone can do to show enough gratitude for what our Beloved Mr. McPike has done for ALL of us... However naming East after him... should never have been doubted! It is the LEAST we can do to keep that AMAZING man alive in this community!

It is extremely important to me for this name change to happen. Mr. McPike was and still is everything that East High School embodies. It is imperative and almost his god-given right to bear the name of the institution that he so readily devoted his life and services too. It is people such as myself, the receivers of the principles that he instilled that will see to it that he gets the honor that he so righteously deserves. Thank You and God Bless.

He cared not only in school what was going on in your life . But out of school as well . Because he figured that outside of school impacts how well you do in school . So why not put his name OUTSIDE ON THAT SCHOOL RIP Mr . McPike

Mr. McPike was a father figure to everyone at East High and highly respected. I know he scared me straight the one time I was sent to his office and he really didn't have to say a word. I even remember a flyer going around my senior year that had the 'East High Beer Bong Drinking Team' and it had the assistant principals pictured on it along with other faculty but not Mr. McPike because he was so well respected.

The importance of "RE-naming" East High, with regards to Milton McPike, is to provide all who came before, during, and after his passing, with a memory of him. Mr. McPike has history with east, due to his major influence on any an all he came into contact with him. He is the standard by which education should be governed.

An angel sent to look over, direct, and touch the lives of so many individuals. Mr.McPike was so much more than a principal. He was a father to those of us who didn't have one, a friend when you really needed one, and an incredible role model. Mr.McPike earned respect from his students by respecting them not as kids but as people who mattered and made a difference in his school. He truly cared about each and every one of his students and made sure that they knew it. He taught the importance of striving towards excellence.Although he was a busy man he was never too busy when a student needed him. He is the reason that I personally graduated from high school. When I was ready to give up, he was there to help me pick the pieces up and make a plan to succeed. I am so proud to be able to say that I was under the wing of such a wonderful man.

I feel that Mr McPike was an inspiration to the students that went to East High School. While he was at East High School he brought that school to one of the top High Schools in the country. I am biased as he was my principal, but I believe his actions spoke loudly enough as to the person, and principal he was.

A pilar of the community, role model, someone with a strong presence, keen ear and a kind and gentle touch that is the mark/essence of a true hero... He touched many lives and inspired countless others by giving hope in times of hopelessness. This would be a nice gesture of giving something back to someone who gave so much.

Mr McPike exemplified what it is to care about children in our community- young adults need role models and anyone who mentions his name could tell a story that sets an example for all to follow.

I'm an East High grad (Class of '72) and a Madison police officer who had many occasions to visit my old school during Mr. McPike's tenure. He turned the place around, and it hasn't been the same since he left. Please keep the memory of this extraordinary man alive by renaming the school in his honor.

I had the honor of being in school when Milton Mcpike was the principal. He was a figure that kids of all backgrounds and socioeconomic levels respected. He treated us with respect and undersanding rather than impunity and disrespect. Even trouble maker kids looked up to him. He towered over the halls of East High among the students with a welcoming smile and a stern presence.

I have been a Madison Fireman for 27 years. During that time I have taken many students to the hospital or seen them for different reasons. During that time I have asked every one of them what they thought of their principal Mr. Milton Mcpike. It was unanimous until the day he died. They had great respect and admired him. This is from high-schoolers who do not usually sing such praise of their principal. I also got to know Milt personally during the tragic accident that killed 3 students. He was nothing short of phenomenal the way he handled that situation and the students. He was one of the most respected principals and teachers I have ever met. Just look at what happened to East when he retired. He was truly irreplaceable.
