Target:
The Madison Metropolitan School Board
This petition is intended to get the Madison Metropolitan School District to rename Madison East Side High School: Milton L. McPike East Side High School.
You cannot talk about Madison East High School without talking about Milton McPike. The two are synonymous. We the undersigned wish to honor Milton McPike because for the past three decades he served Madison's young people and was committed to influencing our greater community. Through his force of personality Mr. McPike created a community of teachers, students, and parents at East High School and made it his life's work to affect change, inspire, and instill a resounding sense of pride in each and everyone that he knew. Those of us who were lucky enough to know Mr. McPike will live our lives honoring his memory, and those students who unfortunately will never personally know Milton McPike, can be inspired by learning in a building named for him which honors his legacy.

Milton was always a role model for those he knew. He represented that which was right about public education. He was Madison's answer to Joe Clark. His life and memory must live on and no better way than to name a school for him.

To rename Madison East to Milton McPike Eastside High School is just the next logical step in carrying on the legacy of this great man. He impacted my life personally and I know that there are so many lives that he touched as a principal of this great school. I think it is beautifully said by someone on "Facebook": "You know a man is a legend when he wins a Super Bowl, plays for the Harlem Globetrotters, and yet the things he is most remembered for are the things that happened after he retired from the game. Milt McPike is most well known for changing the lives of thousands of students over the years." Please vote yes to changing the name of East to honor this great man. Sincerely, Marci Strong

Mr.McPike has been a great influence for East High School. I remember when he started at West, his presence was always known, he could walk down the hall and not say anything, and you would question yourself, Is there somewhere I need to be? Am I missing a class? Without saying it he expected GREAT THINGS from EVERYONE, no matter what race you were. He will be missed, but I hope more remembered from the school that may be named after him.

Mr McPike contributed to his school above and beyond the norm and had impact in young lives. Name a school after a modern day hero and give the next generation goals to aspire to reach.

He made East what it was you couldn't go to any Madison school and not know who Milton McPike was. Everyone knows that he made East a safer place for it's students and I pray that they honor him in this way.

Mr. McPike dedicated himself to the school and so much of what the school has become is because of his dedication and care. It is only fitting and proper to rename the school in the memory of a great man who gave so much of himself to provide an amazing learning environment.

Mr. Milton McPike was the face you saw when someone mentioned Madison East Side High. Forget about the beautiful building itself, forget about your friends and regular teachers. It was Milton McPike. He was respected by all that met him mainly because of the way he carried himself. Without saying a word, his presence demanded respect. Now to show that he was respected as much as he deserved to be and then some, Madison East Side High should be renamed to honor Mr. Milton L. McPike.

Milton McPike had an enormous influence on myself and other students when I attended East in the late 1980's. It's hard to picture the school without him, but honoring him by renaming the school would go far in keeping his spirit alive.

Why do you feel it is important to rename Madison East Side High School for Milton McPike? He made a positive impact on thousands of high school students lives. Most was done at East High School over 25 years. He was a legend!

Most of my memories of high school include Mr. McPike talking with students in the mall or surrounded by students in the cafeteria. He created an atmosphere that embodied a wonderful mix of comfort and discipline. Whenever I tell someone about my high school, I always mention Mr. McPike.

Mr. McPike was an amazing Principal. He knew everyone by name; he cared deeply about students and teachers; he defused tense racial and class-based situations with ease and humor. At a school like East, where the diversity and quirkiness of the student body has the potential to either blow up or be the backbone of a fantastic educational institution, it's people like Mr. McPike who make all the difference. He was my Principal back in the 80s and I'll never forget him. Rename the school!

Mr. McPike turned East around from an average school into a caring school of excellence. I think it would be a lovely legacy to change the name of East to Milton L McPike East Side High School.

Mr. McPike was an amazing man. He had a huge impact on the lives of countless people, and will be remembered as a person who truly cared about others. His dedication to the students and staff at East High School was limitless, and naming East for him is a wonderful way to honor that dedication.

Why do you feel it is important to rename Madison East Side High School for Milton McPike? Mr. McPike made East High what it is today. Without him I would not be the professional I am. He understood lifes challenges and was able to still motivate us to strive to be better. We name our other schools after people who haven't contributed as much locally all the time. This would allow his legacy to live on in the hearts and memories of all of us alumni and students. I have been out of school for many years and Mr. McPike still remains my mentor and when I think of him I remember he believed in me.

i think it is a great idea because if it wasn't for him this school wouldn't be where its at right now. when someone does something great like he did they should be recgonized for his/her achievement. he has stoped alot of racism at east even when he left the kids and teachers at the school took up were he left off to keep the school going good.

Mr. McPike was an icon in the East Madison community for both students and families. His willingness to connect with students beyond the school building was evident with his continued presence and participation with student activities and events not connected to the school. His ability to connect families to the all school environment and welcome them to a place that they themselves might not have been successful with was continually apparent by the continued improvement in test scores, visibility of parents at the school and involved with school activities and events.

His impact goes without saying - he was an exceptional person! My son went to East for a a year. Charles was not what you would call an ideal student. Most schools, teachers, and administrators had written him off. Mr. McPike treated Charles with care and respect. He treated everyone that way. He made a point of knowing everyones name, and you could not be around him and not feel as if you were a valuable person with unlimited potential. He will be greatly missed by this community, and it is only fitting to keep his name and spirit alive, in this community, by renaming East after the man that gave it heart.

I think its a great idea...If it wasn't for Mr. McPike I would not have ever graduated high school. He is a very important part of my past.I would love to see the school named after such a great man.

Being raised from humble beginnings, Milt became a mountain of a man as his character matched his stature. As we went through school together until High school graduation, I only remember him having one bad day of temperment. By the way, he won that one also.

Mr. McPike made it so that those of us who would have otherwise fallen through the cracks didn't. Even though there were over two thousand students at any given time at East, he knew our names. He never let us feel like we were insignificant.
