Milwaukee County First

Listen to the voters - save our transit, parks, and EMS.

Target:
WI state legislators and Governor Doyle
Sponsored by:

In November of 2008, the residents of Milwaukee County approved a referendum asking for a 1% sales and use tax.  The tax was intended to provide a dedicated funding source for transit, parks & recreation, and EMS services, as well as ease the burden on the property tax payer by removing $67 million from the tax levy.  In the summer of 2009, our state legislators included only a portion of this in the budget they sent to Governor Doyle, who then vetoed the measure entirely.  With devastating cuts being proposed for our transit, parks, and EMS systems, if not eliminating them completely, it would further limit access to good jobs and lower the quality of life for our community.  Due to the imminent threat to these services, we call for our state legislators and Governor Doyle to respect the will of the voters and take immediate action to allow Milwaukee County to authorize a 1% sales and use tax as a dedicated funding source for these services.

and people wonder why Milwaukee is just so darned segregated. well lets start with allowing everyone to transit more easily like a modern city that cares about the quality of life for all of its residents. Instead we shame people for not having the means by which to buy a belching automobile to escape the squalor.

A year ago, I understood Governor Doyle's reasons for vetoing the sales tax increase. Unfortunately, delaying funding that will help to improve Milwaukee County's bus system and parks any longer will weaken the economic recovery that is, finally, underway. Please restore the parks funding originally voted for in the 2008 referendum. It's been almost two years since Milwaukee County voters instructed you to authorize the 1 cent sales tax increase; it's past time now for you to do your job and enact it. Thank you.

A sure way to kill a program is to make it more expensive and less convenient, exactly what's being done to our public transit system. We need proactive, compassionate, intelligent thought and action to save and improve our resources. Milwaukee deserves more, Milwaukee deserves better.

I have teenagers and I live in the inter-city there is not any type of recreation at the parks to give them something to do. All of the bus routes that are non existent now it is hard for them to get straight to places now they have to catch multiple buses to get where they used to catch one or two.

Our county executive is strangling Milwaukee County. Now our once magnificent, jewel-like park system requires $100s of millions in repairs and the transit system routes continue to shrink. I rode the bus for 6 years and the flyer route and regular route schedules weren't even coordinated. Voters approved a referendum; allow Milwaukee County to plan and implement the sales tax as a dedicated funding source for these services.

The public citizens deserve to preserve our park system and the accessibility of transit and EMS services. I strongly endorse the addition of a dedicated sales tax to ensure such services.

Local governments need freedom from the unfunded state mandates that result from cuts in shared revenues. This is one way to end that practice.

The wealthy can go on vacation or to their lake cottage up north. The poor have only the parks.
