Our Say in Oak Ridge Elementary School

Target:
Parents who want to get back to ORE

We would like to urge Guilford County School officials to complete all repair work as quickly as possible and return our students to Oak Ridge Elementary by January 2010.  Neither NIOSH nor any litigation issues should be allowed to cause delays in getting our students back in their school.
We would like to urge Guilford County School officials to complete all repair work as quickly as possible and return our students to Oak Ridge Elementary by January 2010.  Neither NIOSH nor any litigation issues should be allowed to cause delays in getting our students back in their school.
We the undersigned, are writing on behalf of the parents of Oak Ridge Elementary School students who believe that the situation requiring the displacement of the students of ORE has gone far enough.

We whole-heartedly believe that the health and well-being of the children and the faculty and staff is our primary concern.  We have reviewed the findings from the Turner Group, NIOSH, and other information and reports posted on the GCS website.  Based on the number of tests and investigations into a potential mold issue, HVAC issue, or other issues, we believe that due diligence has been done to uncover any systemic issues impacting the health of students and staff.  Efforts should now focus on immediately completing any work to correct the problems identified. Furthermore, any work that can be completed on nights or weekends after the students and staff return, should not delay reopening ORE.

Without further evidence indicating the presence of other problems that may negatively impact the health of the students and staff, we must stop spending our already greatly limited resources searching indefinitely for additional issues with this building.  Neither NIOSH nor litigation issues should be allowed to delay repair work while costs and resources are drained from Guilford County Schools and the well-being of our families is compromised.  We strongly urge the School Board, ORE administrators, and any other individuals or organizations involved in the decision-making to reopen ORE with the same urgency in which it was closed!

We should all have voice in this matter, but the voice that has not been heard is that of the parents who believe that enough is enough! We have a beautiful, clean school with only minimal physical or structural issues.  We are fortunate to have the wonderful school that we have.

We want to thank the Plan B committee and others who were involved in making the transition this fall go as smoothly as possible.  They have done an excellent job and continue trying to address the issues of our school being displaced in three locations.  Despite all of their efforts, there are still obstacles which have not been overcome that have put our students at a disadvantage for this year.  These vary in their impact at each of the locations and include:

  • lack of access to computers for all students
  • limited access to library books
  • limited playground equipment
  • safety concerns at ORMA
  • significant heating and air conditioning problems at ORMA
  • playground at ORMA located adjacent to a busy highway
  • the omission of the Accelerated Reader Program
  • unreasonable bus schedules and excessive time spent on buses
  • additional transportation costs estimated by GCS to be $345 per day
  • excessive costs for leasing space at ORMA (approximately $27,000 per month)
  • children in basement rooms with no windows or direct exits
  • issues with providing lunch at ORMA
  • limited lunch time at Colfax
  • obstacles to prevent parent involvement
  • limited class space at all locations

For many families, the greatest issue is simply getting students to and from three locations.  Our children are best served under one roof in Oak Ridge.

We must place a priority on moving our students back to ORE!  We strongly urge that steps be taken to move us back to Oak Ridge Elementary by January 4, 2010.

I am not a parent of children at Oak Ridge Elementary School. But, I am a parent of a child at another Guilford County school. I am concerned that resources are being diverted unnecessarily to one school at the expense of children in many other school.

It's very irritating to see bureaucracy and fear of lawsuits get in the way of common sense. We moved to North Carolina in August and picked Oak Ridge mainly because of the elementary school. (We have children in 1st, 3rd & 5th grades.) We probably paid more for our house because of the area schools, but if this continues it could lower our home value. We were really looking forward to our children being in the same school and only 5 minutes from our house, and then we found out that, not only were they not going to be at the same school, but our 6 year old was going to have to ride a bus back & forth from Colfax. He's too little to be on a bus that long. Someone at the top with some power needs to call and tell the people doing all the reports to expedite them so that things that need to be fixed can be fixed quickly -- or if nothing can be found that needs to be fixed, for goodness sake just have the courage to say so & let the kids return to the school. This is ridiculous. And I'm certain the vast majority of ORE parents would agree -- whether they sign this petition or not.

I have 2 children, one in Kindergarten and one in 5th grade who are obviously at two different sites now. Aside from the obvious inconvience and disappointment this is causing my family, I also feel that my youngest child has been cheated out of a true Kindergarten experience in many ways. While the Oak Ridge teachers and staff are doing their best to make the school day "normal" for these children, there is only so much they can do. Neither of my children have access to computers to work on projects or even take AR tests. My kindergartener is segregated in a trailer at Colfax and is not allowed to experience all the aspects of school life that other children experience. He only recently was allowed to begin checking out library books and only has approximately 10 minutes to eat lunch each day! My 5th grader does not even have access to a library. I have been very pleased with the tremendous effort put forth by ORE staff in doing the best job possible to have the least impact on the kids during this transition time. However, I'm ready for my children to get back into their school and have a stable school environment in which they can excel.

My family and I built our home in Oak Ridge for several reasons, one of which was the school. We have made an investment in our children, home and community, by signing this petition we ask the Guilford County Schools do the same.

I have a 1st grader, another in Middle, and one in private school too, that has to be taken to school every day. Our decision to continue one of our children in private is in part due to the fact that our elementary school is practically in our neighborhood, making it easier for one parent to take the kids in each morning. Now, it takes both of us just to get everyone where they need to go every day. This move is definitely a hardship on our family and we want the kids back at ORE asap. Also, has anyone thought about the impact of all of this on our property values? I think many families make the decision to move to OR because of our wonderful school, but I would imagine that's not the case now.

Two grandchildren: 2nd grade and 4th grade The clean up issue at ORE has caused hardship for both the students and their parents. ORE should have been ready for the return of it's students in August 2009.

I have one child in the 4th grade. It seems like the remediation process is taking quite a long time. $40K over budget so far and counting. I guess if I was getting paid by the hour I would drag the cleanup out as long as possible.
