No uranium mining in New Brunswick

Target:

This petition is aimed at all concerned citizens in New Brunswick that understand the dangers of uranium mining and want to stop the madness!  It builds on the 1353 petitions already signed on SCARE NB-sponsored site.

We the undersigned want to keep this province safe from the harmful effects of uranium mining.

We refuse to be victims of the proven negative effects on our health, our land and our water.   The uranium tailings ponds and piles contain over one dozen harmful radioactive waste products the entire area consisting of the site, the tailings ponds and piles require perpetual care and has to be marked off with Radiation Danger signs.  It will be unhabitable virtually forever.

Uranium companies usually go into areas where the people are poor, ignorant of the effects from the mining or where leaders are greedy for the money.  We would like to say to the government and to the uranium companies that we are not that poor as to need those types of mining jobs or the royalties; we are not stupid enough to believe that uranium mining ' is a good thing' and we are not so desperate as to sell out our future and that of our children for a few dollars in royalties.

We say no way to uranium mining in our province.

Nous ne voulons pas de mine d'uranium au Nouveau Brunswick, qui risquerais de contaminer l'environnement et de causer des tumeurs a nos enfants et aux générations futures.

Stop putting policitcal profits before our health. If the government wants to cut down on health costs then say No to uranium even though the Prime Minister has an abundance of shares and will profit from selling uranium to other countries.

Exploration and mining of uranium is not acceptable in this province. The Mining Act must change to so that land owners and their neighbours may choose to not be staked. A 1 in a million chance is not an acceptable risk to take when our food and water supply is at risk, no matter what the potential short term economic gain.

I wonder why we are spending billions on cancer research and still wanting to mine unranium on our own watersheds. Why can't the Premier be like our neighbours in Nova scotia and not allow this. This kind of exploration will ruin the health of generations to come.

All it takes is one small accident to cause long term major damage. And we all know they cant prevent accidents no mater how carefull they are.

Its not that Uranium in itself if well treated and handled, its just that the area they want to do it is too critical to the inhabitants, animal OR human. Plans on drilling close to water sources is just plain stupid.

There comes a time when big business and the government have to listen to the people. The people are saying no, and for everyones sake you had better listen to us.

To proceed with this would be madness. You cannot not put a price tag on the health of our province and its citizens. And this whole" impact will be minimal" is a bunch of BS.

It never ceases to amaze me how government still suffers from the ADD syndrome:Avoid,Deny,Delay.Of course, the powers that be know about harmful practices, yet for political and/or self-serving purposes, the abuse grinds on;the life of our planet and therefore our own,is notjust "threatened",it is in serious decline. This is not news,we didn`t just wake up a fewyears/decades ago and suddenly realize the problem was on our doorstep.Warnings practically go unheeded until didaster strikes. Now what?Is it so hard to just do the right thing? We need to stop thinking of short-term benefits(save a few jobs here and there),it won`t help much in the long run.

Stop this madness, Canada should be investing in renewable resources like air and solar power, not polluting our environment for future generations to have to deal with. Stop thinking with your dollar signs and startusing your minds, that means you Canadian government, take a stand, be the leaders we NEED!

One elected representative in New Brunswick told me that uranium mines will never actually materialize in New Brunswick, that the government is just letting people go through the motions, but that the quality of the uranium found so far is too poor to actually interest somebody enough to invest in a mine here. In the same conversation, however, he said that uranium has beneficial medical uses and that it is not right to want access to these medical solutions but to not want the uranium mines in our province. Well, despite the fact that my health is not so great, I would gladly forego the medical benefits or uranium and nuclear technology. To be honest, I believe one of the reasons my health is so poor is BECAUSE of my exposure to all these unhealthy technologies. We need to get back down to basics... local services, products, food, etc.

What is it going to take before we learn. There are so many real alternatives for healthy, renewable energy generation yet we keep going for the harmful dead end options. Only when we the people speak up to demand a real change will it happen. The alarm is ringing...time to wake up.

My oh my ... have we lost our minds? We are willing to destroy ourselves and our future ... and for what? Surely there are better ways to fulfill our needs for energy. Wake up people!!
