Say No to the Cross Island Expressway!

Target:
County Council
Sign this petition to tell County Council- No Cross Island Expressway! County Council is considering a proposal to move forward with a private toll-access expressway through Johns Island. As proposed, the Cross Island Expressway would bisect Johns Island, taking residents' land and businesses. It would fill in wetlands and undermine the rural character of Johns Island. Add your name to our petition to say No to the Cross Island Expressway and demand a solution that will not compromise the quality of life on Johns Island!

Thank you for signing this petition and saying %u201CNO%u201D to the Cross Island Expressway Toll Road.

The next step is to follow this link: http://capwiz.com/scccl/issues/alert/?alertid=11522186&type=CU&show_alert=1
to send County Council a message that we say %u201CNO%u201D to the Cross Island Expressway Toll Road.

Councilmember Curtis Bostic specifically asked for more citizen input at the public meeting last night, so it is very important to send your thoughts to County Council by July 7th. Please thank County Council for the opportunity to comment and let them know that you do not want the Cross Island Expressway Toll Road to ruin Johns Island. Ask for a solution that fixes the roads that everyone uses, so that all residents, workers, and visitors will be able to drive on safe roads!

Last night (6/19), we had an amazing turnout of hundreds of people to the public meeting, the vast majority opposed to the Cross Island Expressway Toll Road. Channel 5 news said some estimated that almost 1000 people showed up, and the Post and Courier reported that at least 2/3 of the standing-room-only crowd opposed the Cross Island Expressway Toll Road.

Destroying trees and wetlands creates more problems than an expressway will ever solve.

For those of us who grew up in the Low Country, Johns Island represents exactly what the Low Country is all about. Our wildlife habitats, our wetlands, our farm land, they are all so precious yet their very existance is threatened. Piece by piece Johns Island has been stripped of its character and charm by developers who do not see our islands as the treasures they are but as a means to make money, prosper. This corridor and any other like it will destroy what is left of Johns Island. Please, keep what is left of the Low Country in tact so that generations to come will know what being "from the Low Country" truly means.

Move Kiawah up to Atlanta and it'd solve the problem . . .

Lets please use our collective heads and keep Johns Island as rural as possible. We have so very few places like it in our state anymore. Thank you

This is rediculous why they want to do this. Johns Island is where Forest Gump was filmed and the beauty of its ecosystem should not be destroyed by yet another greedy construction firm thinking that it can help people. Sorry but we can live without a stupid express freeway and this is for the Animals and the enviornment, not us.

People need to look towards our future and accept reality. Our arab friends have us over a barrel. Dramatically, our transportation needs are changing. There is a need to cut back our driving habits. The love affair with our auto's must come to a close; which in turn, lowers the necessity for more highways. The great exodus of folks from afar will slow as the price of fuel reaches 5...6...7 dollars per gallon. The way to control congestion is to slow down the numbers of cars. Our arab friends are seeing to that quite nicely! Who needs politicians, when you have the oil wealthy countries calling the shots. Save the 462 million bucks, because this place might need to defend its shores. Rome is burning! Save yourself!

I work on John's Island and it is a beautiful, lush island with very little concrete. Building this bridge would make an impact by extremely modernizing this lovely island so that some rich bastards can save a few minutes between their summer home in kiawah and their 8:00 reservation at s.n.o.b.

I find it appalling that a handful of people from Kiawah and Seabrook (Only 12% of whom are year round residents) need to destroy so much farmland, wetlands, and culture to shorten a drive to their vacation homes.

Don't destroy the beauty and uniqueness of Johns Island and don't destroy the wetlands and natural habitat to so many specis. This expressway is not needed. Leave John's Island alone!

I have lived on Johns Island all of my life. In the past few years it has become one of the "hot spots" to live in the Lowcounty, but that does not mean that you need to destroy more land and natural habitats just so there is one more roadway on the island. This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard of. I'm certain that there is not a need for this expressway, and most certainly not for a toll.

I think it is bad to change the Island this way and put some of us out of our homes where we have lived most of our lives.

Hasn't there been enough damage to the wildlife and scenic splendor of the lowcountry??? I'd also like to add how unfair it is having taxpayers contribute unwillingly to construct a private road that most of us won't even have access to!!! BOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

There are enough roads on this island for the amount of traffic we are SUPPOSED to have. No more than that. Instead of building yet another road and all the habitat destruction that goes along with that, why don't these folks who moan about "easy access" just move back to the big city? There's a reason that this island is still considered Rural...the people want it so. We already have one Mount Pleasant. Do we need another?

Johns Island has too many current road repair needs right now. To be considering a new road for the benefit of 2 communities that chose their locations because of the seclusion & privacy is unbelievably poor judgement. Roads and infrastructure should be planned to handle any new residential development before the first house is built not after the existing roads become life-threatening. Why doesn't someone think these things through beforehand?!? We don't need another road to be lined with dead animals & litter.

Wetlands must be left alone. Money would be better spent on mass transit systems not new or widening of roads. Take the time to get where you are going and not a 70 mph zip.

My entire extended family lives on Johns Island, and is not in favor of an expressway. The rural character of Johns Island is a true treasure to Charleston and an expressway straight through the middle of it would ruin that character.

This is absolutely absurd! The people of John's Island live here because of it's rural privacy! You would be destroying what this island represents! The clientele that own on Kiawah chose that location because of it's privacy as well. This would completely destroy the island's identity.

This Toll Road would be an Enviormental Disaster. The proposed starting point, at the Stono River Bridge, on Maybank Highway, will require some form of a clover leaf. This is presently a two Lane road, with huge trees on both sides. This "Bull Dozer Blade Rape" of the woodlands will also occur and repeat itself in numerous areas though out John's Island, as the road is constucted. All of this for the sake of a small community who want the luxury of a high speed commute, while their cars are spewing Carbon intothe air we have to breath!!

The massive amount of money that it costs to build a new toll or even non-toll highway could be put to better and more sensible use to benefit (new/improved infrastructure) the residents of Johns Island!

This will only benefit the Rentors and Rentees in Kiawah. They want a fast way to get from the Airport. There are not enough of them to pay for a Toll road. Ultimately, this road will end up on our taxes. Since there are two other free roads, none of the Contractors, Workers, Housekeepers Gardners etc. will pay to use the toll road
