Ohioans -- Now Is The Time To Stand Up For Lake Erie!

Ohioans -- Now Is The Time To Stand Up For Lake Erie!

Target:
Members of the Ohio Senate

Our precious Great Lakes are in trouble. Pollution, invasive species, habitat destruction, and record low lake levels are severely threatening the Great Lakes. As the demand for water grows in other states, it is important that we support the Great Lakes Compact, as passed by the Ohio House of Representatives and four other states, to protect and conserve our greatest resource. We must act now while we still have a chance to protect this vital resource.  We can't take the security of our water and this fragile ecosystem for granted.

Now, more than anytime in recent memory, we have a chance to guarantee the long-term protection and sound management of Great Lakes water, ensuring that these treasures are not sold to the highest bidder and that they are protected for generations to come.

You can help by signing the petition and adding your own reasons why you care about the Great Lakes and Lake Erie.

We, the undersigned, are asking for your support of the Great Lakes Compact. As the demand for water grows in other states, it is important that we support the Great Lakes Compact, as passed by the Ohio House of Representatives and four other states, to protect and conserve our greatest resource. We must act now while we still have a chance to protect this vital resource.

Our precious Great Lakes are in trouble. Great Lakes water plays a crucial role in our region's economy and in our daily lives whether it's the water we drink, the water that supports manufacturing and power plants, or the special times and places we enjoy with our families on the Great Lakes. Pollution, invasive species, habitat destruction, and record low lake levels are severely threatening this fragile resource. We can't take the security of Great Lakes water for granted.

The Great Lakes Compact is a balanced plan focused on protecting the Great Lakes and the Ohioans who depend on them.  Last-minute efforts to modify and derail this plan by a few misinformed legislators place the future of our region at risk.

The time for hesitation is behind us.  Already, four of the eight Great Lakes states have officially supported this plan as have the Ohio House. The time for responsible leadership and action is now. Our precious water resources and the future of our region are at stake. We urge you to fully support the Great Lakes Compact as passed by the Ohio House of Representatives and four other states, today!

Our great lakes are the greatest natural resource in our area. To see the water go anywhere would be an imoral and devestating act to these lakes. As ohioans we need to do anything possible to help preserve these waters, not destroy them. To move water out to other states would be a devastating blow to the ecosystem wich these lakes are not able to withstand. I strongly disagree with any decision to promote water sharing from our lakes.

The Great Lakes are the greatest natural resource in this region, as a water source, fishery, transportation route, and recreational venue and for their scenic beauty. We must protect the lakes in order to ensure a prosperous future for the Great Lakes region.

The Great Lakes hydrology was created by the glaciers, and normal rainfall only replentishes what has been lost in normal use. When water is taken out of this system, it is not a renewable resource due to the relatively small drainage area that the lakes take in. Therefore I am opposed to any withdrawal or transfer of water outside the Great Lakes watershed

I coach high school rowing just off Lake Erie and our sport would not exist without the lake. Beyond that, the Great Lakes define the area in many ways. If we're not willing to protect something so significant, what are we willing to protect? Send the right message; pass the compact.

The Great Lakes represent 1/5 of the entire Earth's fresh water supply. Tampering with its ecology can lead to ruin for us and for those that it will supposedly help. One merely needs to look at the Aral Sea, once larger than our own beloved Lake Erie, and the example it sets for unrestricted diversion. It is now a salt wasteland that no longer supports the numerous fisheries that once flourished along its shores and is now about half its former size. Why? Water diversion for cotton farmers. Let the West and the South learn on their own about water conservation and leave our precious resource alone. If God had intended on placing golf courses in the deserts, he would have created grasses that would thrive in drought. Save our Lakes!

I grew up on Lake Michigan and when I moved to Ohio, I looked at Lake Erie as a great asset. Please keep the lakes Clean for the next generation.

The Great Lakes are a tremendous resource that we as citizens of a border state have the responsibility to protect and preserve for future generations. These great lakes have been forgiving of our past indiscretions, but I do not believe that to be true in the future. We must act along with our neighboring states and provinces to protect them now.

Lake Erie and the Great Lakes are important to me and the people around me. It is the largest source of fresh water that is important to our way of living. I want my children to know and enjoy the same Great Lakes I know.

I live two blocks from the lake. I remember the days when the lake was so dirty that you were afraid to let your kids swim in it. It has made a comeback, but new dangers are compromising the future of the lake, and the people in Ohio who depend on it. Please, protect Lake Erie for my grandchildren!

We must implement only sustainable measures to ensure a healthy future. Piping water out of the Great Lakes is not a sustainable solution.

As President of the local environmental group Friends of Arcola Creek, now in its 75th year, I represent the strong wishes of these dedicated folks to see the Compact passed and needed protection offered to our prized resource, the Great Lakes and its tributaries. Please stop blocking this legislation.

Fresh water is increasingly scarce and precious, must be preserved for benefit of all people. Above all, not privatized. Clean water in the great lakes keeps wildlife alive, both in the water and around it.

I believe that is one of the reasons Ohio is "known" for. There are so many people going fishing, vacations, boating, etc. I am from Ohio and moved to Colorado 6 years ago. We go back to visit family often and we usually go up to Lake Erie.

Lake Erie is Ohio's greatest natural resource and an irreplaceable source of fresh drinking water. It's impact in terms of tourism revenue, jobs and recreation are too numerous to mention. Lake Erie is a treasure for the State of Ohio and needs to be protected to insure Ohio's economic, social and environmental stability.

Lake Erie is not only home to me but home to thousands of other people, plants, and animals. The changes I have seen and read about in the Great Lakes have made me realize how unique and precious this resource is to me and how connected our society is to the future of our Great Resource! If we fail to realize the impact our actions on Lake Erie and the other Great Lakes and do something to change them....we will lose our greatest natural resource that has been the catalyst for growth and prosperity in the midwest.

Eight Great Lakes states, Ontario and Quebec worked to create the Compact to protect the watershed of the Great Lakes. Each state must ratify identical concurring legislation for it to become binding and effective. Ninety-five percent of the fresh water in the United States is held in the Great Lakes. Lake levels are LOW; NOW! OHIO PROUD? - to look out from our Lakeshore properties to see MUDFLATS? Shallow-Lake-Erie shore levels could be properly maintained, if the Compact were ratified. It's high time the Ohio Senate approves the version of the Compact that the eight Great Lakes states agreed upon, including Ohio! It behooves the Senate to honor our commitment!

Isn't it about time we consider future generations? I want them to enjoy the same quality of life issues as I have over many years of camping, vacationing, swimming and beach walking.

The great lakes are one of our nation's greatest resources and supply of fresh water. We need to conserve and preserve them, along with the flora and fauna that depend upon them, for our future generations.

It is part of our national heritage. It is an amazing piece of carved art, and its contents are going to be very important; very soon.

I love nature and Lake Erie is one of the most precious areas on earth. Lake Erie is known as the Walleye capital of the world, not to mention one of the best lakes to fish. The Great Lakes fresh water is unique in the world to say the least. Imagine what the Maumee Bay waters as an example, was like 250 years ago. I imagine that in my mind, how the many wetlands naturally filtered and cleansed the lake. How clear the water was and most important there was a balance of native nature. The cloudy muddy polluted appearance certainly does not do the lake justice in our area, but was better than 20 years ago. So, in closing there is hope for a bright future of our Great Lakes. We have a long way to go for those days we imagine and we certainly do not need to complicate the issue by sharing the water. Thank you.

The Great Lakes are integral to the quality of Ohio's environment (as well as 8 other midwestern states and Canada) and the sustainability of the ecosystem here. Protection of the resource quantity and quality is essential, and they are now at great risk from invasive species, water diversion, and polluted nutrient rich summer "dead zones". The Great Lakes are a precious gift of the last ice age and contain a significant amount of the world's freshwater resources. They provide many billions of dollars worth of annual benefit to people living in this drainage basin, annually. Recreation, shipping, and water supply are just some of the benefits. Our national government needs to implement the recommendations of the Great Lakes Restoration Plan of 2005, and the Great Lakes Compact needs to be endorsed now by all the states to ensure this resource will be held safe for future generations to also enjoy.

Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga Falls are examples of fantastic natural resources that Ohioans could be enjoying recreationally as well as enjoying the added status to our location in the country. Additionally, the national Cuyahoga Valley Park is right behind the Smokey Mountains, in attendance. I envision Lake Erie respected for its worth to us as well as combined with our other great attractions to bring tourist to our state.

Great Lakes are important to me because they are the source of my drinking water. How long would I last without this precious resource?

The Great Lakes are treasures beyond measure. They must be kept healthy for the services they provide. Our leaders need to control the amount of water being used, not pump more out of the lakes.
