Demand Wayne Pacelle Step Down from HSUS Leadership

On May 21, 2012 Michael Vick's federal probation will terminate and he will again be eligible to own a dog.  He has publicly stated his desire to have a dog saying it would:

"...be a big step in the rehabilitation process. I think just to have a pet in my household and to show people that I genuinely care, and my love and my passion for animals; I think it would be outstanding. If I ever have the opportunity again I will never take it for granted,"
Vick told NBC, "I miss having a dog right now. I wish I could."

Federal investigation documents stipulate that on two separate occasions, Vick personally tossed family pets into the dog fighting ring and laughed as they were mauled.  This is how Michael Vick demonstrates his "passion for animals".

Since his release from prison, Vick has appeared on numerous occasions with HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle at "End Dogfighting" events and has apparently garnered the full support of the organization's leader.

Pacelle is on record as saying:

"I do think that if his rehabilitation progresses and he handles the probation period flawlessly, it could be a good thing for Michael Vick's family to have a pet at the end of that process." -  Wayne Pacell, CEO of the Humane Society of the United States

This is from a man in charge of an organization whose stated Mission is:

"Celebrating Animals / Confronting Cruelty"

For the record, Michael Vick has never served a single day in jail/prison for "dog fighting" or for "animal cruelty".  Crimes he is admittedly guilty of.   For Pacelle to openly support Vick in adopting or owning another dog is a slap in the face of everyone who has generously given and supported the goals of the HSUS.

It is time for Pacelle to step down or be removed if necessary in order to make room for someone who more accurately mirrors the objectives of this organization and it's many members.

We the undersigned strongly believe that Chief Executive Officer, Wayne Pacelle's open and public support of Michael Vick's future desire to own another dog is inappropriate and is in direct contradiction to the stated mission of this organization:

"Celebrating Animals / Confronting Cruelty"

Mr. Pacelle should be the loudest voice in condemning the injustices of Michael Vick's trial and the fact that he has never served a day in jail/prison for "dog fighting" or his acts of "animal cruelty" involving the sadistic torture and murder of numerous dogs including two of his family's pets.  Instead, he has done the exact opposite, both in interviews and through his personal blog.

We strongly feel that Mr. Pacelle is no longer fit to lead this great organization and respectfully request his immediate and unconditional termination.  Be assured, we will continue in our quest until our goal is achieved.  While perhaps our strongest motivator may be our withheld financial support, we sincerely hope that our collective voice is persuasive enough for this body.

Thank you for your time and attention and for your continued advocacy.
