Pollution, invasive species, habitat destruction, and record low lake levels are severely threatening the Great Lakes. We can't take the security of our water and this fragile ecosystem for granted.  As the demand for water grows in other states, it is important that we support the Great Lakes Compact to protect and conserve our greatest resource. We must do this before it is too late.

Now, more than anytime in recent memory, we have a chance to guarantee the long-term protection and sound management of Great Lakes water, ensuring that these treasures are not sold to the highest bidder and that they are protected for generations to come.

You can help by signing the petition and adding your own reasons why you care about the Great Lakes.

We, the undersigned, are asking for your support of the Great Lakes Compact. As the demand for water grows in other states, it is important that we support this delicately negotiated initiative to protect and conserve our greatest resource. Our precious Great Lakes are in trouble. Great Lakes water plays a crucial role in our region's economy and in our daily lives whether it's the water we drink, the water that supports sports fishing and tourism, shipping or the special times and places we enjoy with our families on the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes Compact is a balanced plan focused on protecting the Great Lakes and the Pennsylvanians who depend on them.

The time for hesitation is behind us.  Already, four of the eight Great Lakes states have officially supported this plan as have the Pennsylvania House when they passed HB 1705. The time for responsible leadership and action is now. Our precious water resources and the future of our region are at stake. We urge you to fully support the Great Lakes Compact today.

Fresh water is a more precious natural resource than oil-- and although it is a renewable resource when watersheds and the local hydrology are left intact, diversion to other large quantities will likely lead to dire consequences in areas from which it is extracted such as dry wells and disruption of the local wetlands ecology.

If these great bodies of fresh water should be compromised it would jeopardize millions of families, hundreds of species of lake-dependent organisms and do dishonor to those whose job it is to protect our natural resources.

Preserving the quality of the Great Lakes will have a positive effect on the health of the people living in the area and will help to enhance habitats for many types of plants and animals that seem to be in decline at this time.

Preserving this frssh water resource becomes more important each year. This legislative action is consistent with that goal.
