Preserve The Plant's Legacy for Future Generations!

Target:
Building Owner(s), Sausalito Mayor and City Council, Community Foundation (s)
Sponsored by:
The Plant Studios' former location in Sausalito (also formerly known as The  Record Plant) has hosted such music artists as Bob Marley, Grateful Dead, Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker, Kronos Quartet, Santana, Huey Lewis, Journey, Jefferson Starship, Sammy Hagar, Metallica, Tom Waits, Prince, Beyonce and many more too numerous to list. Due to changes in the music industry and values of real estate in Southern Marin, this historic music landmark in the Bay Area is currently at risk of development and demolition.
AV4C is a non-profit organization committed to supporting music education and independent artists in the Bay Area and beyond. It was founded by a musician/former studio manager and is endorsed by members of our local creative community and former employees of The Plant Studios and The Record Plant, Sausalito. AV4C's comprehensive "Artsboretum" plan to purchase the property, restore the studios and form a certified green music arts incubator within the building, is a viable solution to preserve its rich legacy, stimulate our local economy and provide a significant cultural contribution to our community. View more info on this plan at http://www.av4c.org
We, the undersigned, support this effort and respectfully request that our community leaders take whatever steps are necessary to prevent developers from removing this icon of our music history from our cultural landscape. We also encourage your assistance to provide the resources necessary to protect this landmark from the profit driven fluctuations of the commercial real estate market once and for all, to give our children and future generations the opportunity make some music history of their own.

As a kid the plant was a force in Marins music scene, a scene that is fading away.

The Plant is a historic facility. And as a musician and artist it is important for the bay area to have places like these involved in the arts, as well as share in the history of music and our SF Bay Area

It's not only a Marin County /Bay Area legendary place, but legendary around the world with all musicians and music lovers. It would be very sad to see it go.

I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to intern at the plant for a year and a half. Just walking into The Plant, you get a sense of rich history and feel the potential of exciting things to come. The Plant is truly a special place, a place of rich and interesting architectural detail, infused with the spirits of the many artists and staff that have walked its corridors. Please preserve this piece of history - there is truly no other place like it.

Sausalito's arts community brings income and interest to the city and to surrounding communities. It makes sense that members of that community would want to give back. In giving back, they also ensure that there is an arts community for future commerce, and for the cultural benefit of future generations. Marin county is not insulated from cultural erosion, and the preservation of this historic physical location can ensure that The Plant's contributions to the cultural wealth of people all over the world are neither forgotten, nor forsaken.

The Plant Studios in Sausalito has been a very important place for musicians in the Bay Area and far beyond. Its role in recording the music of many of America's legendary artists requires that it be preserved as a historic building for the use and education of musicians for generations to come. Music heals. Music inspires. Don't let the Plant disappear from the planet!

I got a chance to visit the Plant last Fall for a high school reunion. I had not been aware of it before and was blown away by the music history that was made there. As it was, I got to see Ronnie Montrose and others jam at the party and it was totally cool. Let's keep this landmark standing and making music!

It's disgusting to me that a recording studio which is considered by many to be one of the Bay Area's most precious landmarks could even be evicted!! Sausalito will be a FAR more boring place without the Plant, and a city that allows it's most unique gems to be turned into condos will soon have nothing unique left to offer.

We still need quality good "old fashioned" recording studios! You can do a lot of great things in your garage these days, but it's important to have an place to set up a whole band and play the songs you've rehearsed for months/years. The Plant is not just an amazing recording studio, as well as an incredible creative environment. It would be a shame to lose the plant, not only for the history that has passed through there, but the history that has yet to come...

I am a songwriter in he Marin County. Though I have never had the pleasure of recording at The Plant, I do believe that if I were to have had a supportive incubation place to build a strong supportive music community and learn the process of creating a career in music I would have felt less isolated and alone as an independent artist. Let me know how I can help. Amie Penwell http://www.amiepenwell.net

When I graduated from college and recording school I took my income tax return and what little I had and packed my car to move to San Francisco so that I could intern specifically at Plant Studios. I had no second option or backup plan. I firmly believed that the studio's rich musical heritage and the professional insight from engineers including Arne Frager and John Cuniberti would serve as the best foundation upon which to launch my career in the recording industry. I was never disappointed or wrong in my belief. The lessons I learned in my short time at Plant Studios continue to serve me to this day. I now engineer and manage the in-house studio at Atlantic Records in New York working with artists from the entire Warner Music Group roster. Plant Studio's president, Arne Frager, showed interest in not only my potential as an engineer but also as a person and encouraged me to believe in myself, to never stop working hard, never stop learning and to be the best all around person I could be. This studio deserves to be preserved not only for it's rich heritage but for it's existing service to the recording industry and to all of the interns, assistant engineers, engineers and producers that have come from and will come from it's hallowed control rooms. This industry and the nation as a whole need to be given hope that our dreams as people, artists, and as a nation can not only survive but flourish. The preservation of small businesses, historical landmarks and places of interest such as Plant Studios not only increase optimism in these dark days of foreclosures and evictions but also give our local communities their identity and distinction. The Bay Area has always been the birthplace of modern ideals, freedom and hope. Plant Studios is in many ways a cornerstone of the Bay Area's world famous art and music community. Please keep the Plant alive. Thank you!

Culturally, The Plant is the heart of the Bay Area musical heritage. While powers beyond most of our control have eroded the music industry almost beyond recognition, and there are few remaining symbols of music's vital influence on our beloved community, The Plant is one "endangered species" that we can save. Personally, my husband has made his most lasting musical work in those beautiful rooms and it is hard to believe that he and other artists will never have another opportunity to have their musical gifts cultivated and supported as only The Plant could do! To let this unique Bay Area pearl drop from our hands is one stupid tragedy that should and can be avoided. Protect this place and make a not-so-small stand for the Bay Areas "endangered" musical identity.

Way too much history being eliminated in the world these days. Time to take a stand and preserve at least a little bit. Many great artists such as Sammy Hagar have used this studio to keep us entertained.

Preserve this piece of our cultural histroy! I just saw the film 'The Wrecking Crew' in LA, and am still shocked and saddened by how many iconic studios, like Gold Star, birthplace of the 'Wall of Sound', have been felled to make room for strip malls and parking lots. The Plant in Sausalito is an mportant piece of California's history and should preserved as such.

The music industry may be in shambles, but our music heritage is one of our most important legacies. The fact that the Plant Studios is the origin of many tunes that are now the soundtrack of many lives is reason enough to save it.

Some of historys greatest records have been cut at the Record Plant. To destroy it would be a huge mistake. We need to preserve these wonderful acoustic spaces or soon there won't be any left! You CANNOT get the same sounds recording in a converted bedroom!

I heartily support this petition and all it seeks to ensure protection of the Marinship waterfront distrist, its heritage, and its cultural landmarks of many colors and types. For 20+ years, I've had a studio in the neighboring Industrial Center Building, and I urge the City of Sausalito to do everything necessary to keep from selling its own heart!

Growing up in Marin, I always felt privileged that I was surrounded by such beautiful and influential art, music and film. The thought of The Plant not being around anymore truly hurts my heart. Some of the most innovative and life changing albums were created there and Sausalito would not be as magical of a place if the Plant did not exist. Please save The Plant so that future generations of musicians can give us more influential art and once again, change and re shape the face of music.
