Preserve and Cultivate Our Rich Music Legacy!!

Target:
Building Owner(s), Sausalito Mayor and City Council, Community Foundation (s)
Sponsored by:
The Plant Studios' former location in Sausalito (also formerly known as The  Record Plant) has hosted such music artists as Bob Marley, Grateful Dead, Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker, Kronos Quartet, Santana, Huey Lewis, Journey, Jefferson Starship, Sammy Hagar, Metallica, Tom Waits, Prince, Beyonce, String Cheese Incident, Phil Lesh and Friends, Gov't Mule, Roy Hargrove, Dave Matthews Band and many more too numerous to list. Due to changes in the music industry and values of real estate in Southern Marin, this historic music landmark in the Bay Area is currently at risk of development and demolition.
The Artsboretum is a non-profit project committed to supporting music education and independent artists in the Bay Area and beyond. It was founded by a musician/former studio manager and is endorsed by members of our local creative community and former employees of The Plant Studios and The Record Plant, Sausalito. This comprehensive plan to purchase the property, restore the studios and form a certified green music arts incubator within the building, is a viable solution to preserve its rich legacy, stimulate our local economy and provide a significant cultural contribution to our community. View more info on this plan at http://www.artsboretum.org
We, the undersigned, support this effort and respectfully request that our community leaders take whatever steps are necessary to prevent developers from removing this icon of our music history from our cultural landscape. We also encourage your assistance to provide the resources necessary to protect this landmark from the profit driven fluctuations of the commercial real estate market once and for all, to give our children and future generations the opportunity make some music history of their own.

I have visited the studio several times, and would HATE to see the site developed. I urge everyone who values the history of the music industry to sign this petition and spread the word that we may lose an icon and a place where incredible music was recorded.

Music is the most important thing in my life and a lot of other folks, too. Removing the Record Plant would be like removing Abbey Road studios. A crime against the heart and soul. Please keep this sanctuary of creativity and freedom of expression.

I have dedicated a large percentage of my creative efforts as an artist to honoring our/humanity's local as well as global cultural heritage, in that a community forfeits its history by not expressing reverence to the people, places, accomplishments, and contributions that in essence provide/form the foundation for future generations to come. As it's been said before, it bears repeating...If we don't know our history, we jeopardize the destiny of our future. We must cherish our roots, for one never knows when a Katrina may come along, threatening to wash it all away, as a reminder to be thankful for what we have. Louis-Virie Blanche '09

The Bay Area has a great and diverse music history. There are so many interesting things that make up its musical legacy. For example, I learned that Otis Redding wrote--the first verse of--'The Dock of the Bay' while on a house boat in Sausalito!

The 70's and 80's laid waste so many great venues. There are still things left that are worth saving!

I grew up in Marin, I spent alot of time with these musicians. Please turn this amazing piece of history into a museum. I remember looking on record jackets just to see if it was recorded at The Record Plant because I knew it would be an awesome production.

The Record Plant is an important historical point of interest for an entire essential thread of development in Twentieth Century American culture. It always occurs to us too late for us to conserve these treasures. This would be an investment in tourism. As the U.S. passes on as a major industrial economy, tourism and entertainment will be the Bay Area's, no, America's most important commercial industries of the future.

I have recorded at the "Record Plant" many times since 1972, both as a band member and as a session musician. The facility has spawned a variety of musical styles over the years, and is widely respected as a first class recording studio throughout the world. I became friends with the studios founder, the late Gary Kellgren, after meeting him at a Rod Stewart session in London, England in 1972. The list of bands that have recorded at the "Record Plant" is impressive. Many of the recordings reaching number one on the Billboard sales charts. The "Record Plant" or "Plant Studios," as it is currently known, is a valuable asset to the City of Sausalito, as well as to the San Francisco Bay area in general. With its internationaly respected name and rich cultural heritage, the "Record Plant" helps spread awareness of Marin County and its valuable contribution to the arts. The beautiful exterior woodwork alone is one of the few remaining examples of old Marin architecture. The "Record Plant Studios" is a Bay Area institution, and should be saved at all cost.

The Plant is nothing less than a shrine to the rich music heritage of the Marin community. As such it's destruction would serve to further diminish a vital aspect of the charm that makes Marin a very special place in the eyes of not only the Bay Area, but nationally and internationally.
