stop cruelty to chickens during transportation

The transport of chickens in Greater Mumbai is a continuous excercise in cruelty and results in horrific sufferings of all the birds being transported.

The AIM of this petition is to "try and better the transport conditions of these sensitive birds and ameliorate their suffering".
Every day hundreds of chickens are transported by road into Mumbai, travelling to each suburb in the city.  The mode of transport is by tempo -open on all sides, resembling a large cage with sections.

The Transport of Animal Rules, 1978 were amended in 2001.  The amended requirements were :

1. Containers should be properly cleaned and sterilised before poultry is placed in them.
2. Poultry shall not be exposed to sunlight, rain and direct blast of air during transport.
3. Poultry shall not be transported when the temperature exceeds 25 degrees Celsius.
4. Poultry to be transported shall be inspected at every 6 hour interval.
5. Arrangements shall be made for watering and feeding during transport and during hot weather the watering shall be ensured every 6 hours.
6. Poultry to be transported shall be in healthy and good condition..certified by a veterinary doctor for...fitness to undertake the journey.
7. Transportation shall not remain stationary for more than 30 minutes during which it shall be parked in the shade and arrangements shall be made for watering and feeding.

We wish to point out that none of these rules is being followed during the transportation of chickens into and within the limits of Greater Mumbai.  This results in immense and unnecessary suffering to the birds in transit.

We request you to ensure that all the rules in the Transport of Animals (Amendment) Rules, 2001, are enforced by your staff with immediate effect.

Thank you for your consideration.
