Protect Quebec's Magpie River

National Geographic has ranked the Magpie River, nestled along Quebec%u2019s North Shore, one of the top ten whitewater river destinations in the world. Despite the attention it attracts from outdoor adventure enthusiasts as well as its range of biodiversity, future power projects threaten this whitewater ecosystem.   Hydro-Quebec considers the Magpie River a potential site for a hydropower plant in the future. Quebec%u2019s Office for Public Hearings on the Environment recommends complete protection of the region and the addition of the Magpie River to the biodiversity reserve.

By signing this letter, you're asking the Quebec provincial government to:

  • - Permanently protect the Massif des lacs Belmont and Magpie biodiversity reserve, including the Magpie River
  •  - Follow through on its promise of protecting 12% of provincial wilderness by 2015
  • - Support The Big Wild vision of protecting at least 50% of Canada's public wilderness

Arcand Minister, and Minister Normandeau

The Magpie is an exceptional series of waterfalls and rapids running through northern Quebec and attract whitewater enthusiasts from around the world. Measures are taken to protect the 1,575 km square basin of the upper river, just north of the Magpie River. However, the Magpie is not currently part of the proposed biodiversity reserve.

I am writing to ask you to include the Magpie River in the draft of the Massif Belmont and Magpie lakes biodiversity reserve, as recommended in 2007 by the Office Qu%uFFFDbec for public hearings on the environment. Full protection of the Magpie River would provide a rich and active-system is maintained in this region. You will also protect the last great rivers of living water in Quebec.

Thank you for taking this step to preserve part of our natural heritage of our dear heart.

Sincerely,

A supporter of Big Wild
