Oil Spill on Tourist Beach

Protect Florida's Coast From Offshore Drilling

Target:
Florida Legislature
Sponsored by:

Jeopardizing Florida's natural resources by oil drilling is not the answer to the energy crisis.  Murky and polluted water, oil spills and tar balls are a standard byproduct of the oil drilling industry. Due to the inability of oil rigs to withstand hurricane force winds, oil spills will be inevitable. Florida's marine life and tourist based economy will be endangered by the failure of Florida to seek alternative energy independence.

Due to the inability of oil rigs to withstand hurricane force winds, oil spills will be inevitable. Florida's marine life and tourist based economy will be endangered by the failure of Florida to seek alternative energy independence.

We the undersigned believe that offshore drilling in Florida will be detrimental to our economy and ecosystem.  We refuse to let the fear of rising oil prices allow our greatest natural resources to be destroyed. We fear murky and polluted waters, oil spills and tar balls that are a standard byproduct of the oil drilling industry.

Oil rigs are unable to withstand hurricane force winds and can create catastrophic oil spills.  These oil spills will wreak havoc on the marine life and shorelines along the Gulf and Atlantic coast, causing damage that simply cannot be replaced with oil profits.  Not only will irreparable environmental harm be caused by oil spills, but more tangible economic harm.  Even with our proven potential oil reserves of 2.6%, the United States cannot eliminate our oil dependency through the drilling of Florida's coastline.  Florida's tourism industry will surely be affected as our tropical shorelines are among our most valued assets, not only nationally but globally

We respectfully request that our Florida Legislature provide moral leadership that will guide our state to clean energy independence.

Why would you want to jeopardize our Natural resources? We love going to Florida where I am originally from and go to the ocean and see the different wildlife that is there. If you take that from us where do we take our kids to show them the ohhhh's and awwwwww's that we had when we were young. Please don't kill our future joy for our children..

If Governor Christ pushes for off-shore drilling he will not get my vote. Thank God for Senator Nelson.

Read this article from Texas monthly. It explains the potential effects of drilling off our coast. http://www.texasmonthly.com/ranch/readme/tarball.php. Don't let Big Oil drill off our coasts! If Christ pushes for this, send him packing when he runs for the Senate! Thank goodness for Bill Nelson!

Drilling is not for Florida our beaches are worth more money than oil. I have visited areas such as Seal Beach, Calf., south of LA, and have viewed oil rigs which were more than 3 miles off the coast. Seriously you trust the oil companies? We have other areas in our nation such as land sites in the middle of the country that are capped and can be re drilled. If you want to be re-elected you will vote no. If you don't you will vote yes.

There are other places to drill that aren't quite the tourist trap that Florida is, as well as the amount of hurricanes they get in the area, the loss of wells/lifes during one isn't worth it, let alone the hazards imposed on the wildlife, etc. since oil companies could care less about anything other than their yearly billion dollar profits regardless of whom/what gets in the way.

We need to wait and work on alternative fuels before you pick the easy way out which is too detrimental to our coast., it is not necessary to do this drilling.

I am a Florida resident. I was born and raised in Tampa, went to school at the University of Florida, and now work in St. Pete for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. I am starting to see the potential of oil drilling off of our coast and it greatly concerns me. I can see the issue from all perspectives. Yes, I understand that drilling for oil has the potential to positively affect our economical situation, but I feel that there will be many more negative aspects than positive resulting from the allowance of oil drilling off of our coast. As Floridians, we are extremely blessed and fortunate to have such a diverse and beautiful environment. Our marine environment and natural resources fuel the tourism industry, from beach visitors to offshore anglers, we have a precious attribute that we should willingly protect, not exploit. Any oil rig placed along our coats, whether it is 3 miles or 60 miles off our shores, will negatively affect the marine ecosystems. I realize the process has the potential to be very clean, but there will always be mistakes in the process. The detrimental effects of small, unheard and unnoticed oil leaks will gradually become an irreversible problem. Why not avoid the potential to disaster while we can? I’m not as concerned with aesthetics of the coast line, but if the waters are opened up to oil drilling, we will eventually litter our coasts with these ugly and bulky rigs. I can guarantee our beaches will quickly loose their appeal to tourists once this happens. I know the economy is bad, but we aren’t going to die, we will be just fine. I know I speak on behalf of many people when I say that we need to look elsewhere to supplement our economy. It is in our hands; let’s not ruin one of our most fortunate gifts.

Why oil off the Florida Gulf Coast... yes, yes I know drilling is safer then years before... new technology, etc. But so has the technology in Solar, Wind & Geothermal improved leaps & bounds in the past decades. We as Floridians... heck as US citizens need to be a shining example on Smart energy options not just for our state & country but for the whole marble!!! No more oil!

I have been to the beaches in Santa Barbra where you can see many oil rigs from the shore. The rigs spoil the beauty of the area, and if you take a stroll down the beach, your shoes/bare feet become coated with sticky tar. Do we really want to destroy our beautiful coast and severely damage the lucrative tourist business for oil, which is a fuel source that is on the way out?
