FEDERAL RECOGNITION FOR SOUTHERN CHEROKEE NATION OF KENTUCKY

FEDERAL RECOGNITION FOR SOUTHERN CHEROKEE NATION OF KENTUCKY

Target:
United States Senator, United States Senate
The last tribe of American Indians who waited 30 years for federal recognition from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Our Chief has turned down casinos, as it is NO PART of our culture, period! The BIA approved all documentation submitted by our tribe (they can be viewed at www.southerncherokeenationky.com ) and we've received our registration number. Thirty years is wrong! Chief Manfox has taught us that whatever is presented to our tribe is not for us - our gift "is the Indian blood" left to us by our ancestors. Anything that is presented to us now is in their memory. Help us and sign our petition for our ancestors. Our goal, as taught, is to help "ALL" American Indians.

Osiyo and wado,
As a tribal member of the Southern Cherokee Nation of Kentucky, I'm privileged to tell you about these hard-working American Indians and why we're asking for your signature to help in this long sought after endeavor.  Our tribes proven existence in the state of Kentucky is over 140 years. You're welcome to visit our website and read our historical documents www.southerncherokeenationky.com/

The commonwealth of Kentucky first recognized our tribe in 1893, by Governor John Young Brown. When our "old" website hit the internet (HTTP://SOUTHERNCHEROKEENATION.NET) along with the 1893 document, many scoffed and called us liars. It was an old document, old writing ... but it doesn't change the fact that it's REAL. Our Honored Chief Michael "Manfox" Buley showed the 1893 document to the present Governor of Kentucky, Ernie Fletcher, who immediately reaffirmed Governor John Brown's first state recognition. We have been state recognized now for 104 years. These documents, and others, can be seen on our new website: www.southerncherokeenationky.com/

You should also know that the BIA (the Bureau of Indian Affairs) came from Washington to our tribal land, in Henderson KY. Our Honored Chief Manfox presented the documents to them for review ~ and each and every one of them were approved as authentic. We received our registration number, which simply means they use the number while checking out tribe for ethics, credibility, etc. We were told by our tribal leaders that it will take 25 months - and then the BIA can simply tell us .... NO!!!!! It can also take up to 30 years. Would other ethnic groups in America have to wait that long for anything??!! Please do not consider this as whining, it is just a fact.

When asked about casinos, our Chief said, "Absolutely not! We carry our ancestors blood and that is our gift". Anything "gifted" to us as American Indians is because of our ancestors, not us. We can never stand in their place and say "we deserve". This great America will never hear a member of the Southern Cherokee Nation of Kentucky speak those words! We've already received the greatest gift of all ..... Indian blood. Our honored Chief serves on the Native American Heritage commission as vice-chairman. He works whenever he is asked and whenever he can volunteer for the commonwealth of Kentucky to preserve and teach. He has taught us well and continues to do so. He also works like many Americans and cares deeply for his family. We expect nothing for ourselves, for we deserve nothing. Our ancestors want us to help ALL American Indians. We do help now, with no resources. Just members working with Chief's help and instruction.

With love and spirit for all ethnic groups, we plead with you to please step forward and help our small tribe gain federal recognition. In doing so, you will be helping open so many doors and help so many human beings.

Wado (thank you)
Smoke and prayers,
Teresa "Giver of Peace"

I have signed this petion due to the Cherokee blood that ruins im my veins also. The Cherokees did so much for this country, if not for the Cherokee Nation, Andrew Jackson said "They served him well & later boasted that he could not have defeated the Creek Nation if it wasn't for the Cherokees! Cherokees had the first Newspaper called the, "Cherokee Phoenix" Was one of the 5 Civilized tribes, that tryed to lived like whites. Andrew Jackson betrayed them. 1829 he became President of the U.S. & did not support the Cherokees, which led to their Removal to Oklahoma 1838-1839. Somebody must explain the 4,000 silent graves that mark the trail of the Cherokees to their exile. Called the Trail of Tears. Murder is Murder & Somebody must answer, somebody must explain the streams of blood that flowed in the Indian Country in the Summer of 1838. So many unjust things have been done to the Native Americans, & is still be done today, Due to "Greed". That is why I'm signing the Petition! My Heart is Cherokee!

I totally support federal recognition for the Southern Cherokee Nation of Kentucky. I was always told that there was cherokee in my family on my mothers side and there is some native american on my dad's side. My family comes from Virginia and WVA. I have not been able to prove it yet but it is in my heart. I hope some day to be able to claim my heritage. I hope the goverment will finally come to understand the importance of what was taken and grant you recognition. My prayers are with you.

I have signed this petition to-day because of the grave injusice done to the American Indians largely by my white race. The betrayel of the Indians is a national disgrace and it's heartening that at last some restitution is being made. But much more needs to be done to redress this wrong.I heartly support your petition.

My grandmother always told me she was Cherokee and she had a sister who lived on the reservation in Talaquah,Ok. I have a copy of my aunts birth certificate that lists my grandmother as native American. I have always been proud of the fact that Cherokee blood ran through my veins and would be honored to finally be recognized as a Cherokee.I think we have earned the right to be recognized by the way all of the native Americans have been treated through out history.

I am a native Kentuckian and my grandfather, Thurman Walton, always told me that his mother, was of Cherokee descent. In studying Native American History, books don't recognize Cherokees of Kentucky. I've come to learn that Cherokee people did dwell in Kentucky if by nothing other than tremendous will. Please recognize the Southern Cherokee Nation.

I'am not a member. But in my heart I would love to be. My grandma was 100% Cherokee. I spent every summer with her in Kentucky. She had the tuffies hands I had ever felt. She showed me how to put in a garden , how to pick 20 differnt weeds from the side of the hill to cook.Showed me signs in the stars and moon. I'm 43 now and learning to speak Cherokee.I want to leave a mark with others, on the God heritage. I wished, to see 300 years ago till now. what really happen to our Cherokee family. Why we have to fight for what was ours then. To stay Ours now. When will peace come?

I am a memebr of a Tribe in Aarkansas that has had a petition for Federal recognition for 10 years. We are the direct descendants of the Cherokee people that were living here on a Federally recognized reservation in the late 1700's and early 1800's. We have undisputed proof of this with birth and death certificates right back to the original Cherokee people and their Chiefs living here then. Our land was taken but our recognition was NEVER terminated! So why should we even have to apply again?? This is wrong. I say my brothers and sisters in Kentucky deserve their long over due recognition as all of us Cherokee people that are descendants deserve. We do not want anything from the other Federally recognized Tribes. We are NOT trying to TAKE ANYTHING away from them. We just deserve the same aknowledgement and respect that they do! This at the very least SHOULD BE DONE !!!! Wado

My Grandmother is Cherokee. I never knew my Great Grandmother but she died in child birth. I am proud of my heritage and the cultlure I have inherited. We must now as Americans make it possible to move forward by recognizing and taking pride in our Native Americans. I treasure my gift of "Indian Blood".

I am a Kentucky native and my great-grandmother was full Cherokee. It's actually the only part of my heritage that I am proud of and respect. It's not surprising that the government doesn't recognize the Cherokee, but that doesn't make it right. ALL people need to be recognized, ESPECIALLY the natives. The white man has done far too much to destroy the land and the name of the Cherokee. It's time for that to stop.

Aaron Brock , Chief Red Bird was my great granpa, i am his V111 in line of grandaughters. i would have been so proud to have been a part of their lives, they endeared so much to have us wher ewe are today, but the government should have a long time ago recognized us . Time to be recognized , what is all the stalling about any way ? Give credit where and when it is deserved.

I am Aaron Brock ChiefRed Birds GR,GR,GR,GR,GR,GR,GR grandaughter and I am proud to be from the Kentucky Cherokee and Its time for them to regain some dignity that was taken from them when all our women and children were slaughtered Its the least the Goverment should to for us and our people. It is the Goverments way of pretending it never happened and we never existed That is not right and I say its time .That we get Federal Recontion For The Southern Nation Cherokee and for the Goverment to keep dening our people exisited. This is a crime in itself not to give the reconition our people deserve.

I stand proud to know that I have ancestral Cherokee Blood. I petition for recognition of my people. Oh, that we could have restitution too, but what could replace what was lost by the treatment, broken treaties, and lies that was given to our people, the first people! How can we accept less than the honor that is due us? Any ethnic group deserves this honor, and most other groups have progressed further than the first americans. Our cherokee ancestors were not immigrants.

As a CHEROKEE i am very proud of my heritage, i am very proud of my history. I am honored by my forefathers and thier achievments. I am proud of the native american blood that runs thru my viens and am also proud of my heritage. I am however disappointed of how few have signed thier great names to the petitions we need so very badly to honor our forefathers. We need this petition to pass, we also need the bill to pass, if not for us in recognition of our heritage, our honor and our dignity as the great people we are. Please help get this petition and this bill passed. If we don't do it who will.

I myself am a descendant of the Cherokee Eastern Band.I was not born on the Reservation nor was I registered before age 18 because my family had been removed from the rolls for not making the Census because they had moved too far away. It doesn't change the fact that the blood is still there. They lived throughout KY, VA, TN, & NC, We are connected with Chief Redbird and still cannot register. So yes I vote to give recognition to the Southern Cherokee Nation of Kentucky. I do have family that is a part of this group even though I am not.

In my heart I feel it is time to recognize the American Indian for all they have contributed to these United States of America. Our Ancestors have fought and died to keep America free, not only for themselves, but for all Americans. The State of Illinois has recognized us back in the year 2001, when they passed a Resolution #196, setting aside September 1st 2001 as An American Indian Day for the State of Illinois, and every September 1st thereafter. It reasd as follows: State of Illinois Ninety-Second General Assembly House of Representatives House Resolution No. 196 Offered by Representative Daniel Burke - Rick Winkel Edward Acebedo Susana Mendoza - Joseph Lyons Jack Franks. Whereas, The members of this body are pleased and honored to recognize a group of individuals who have contributed greatly to their heritage and education of the children of our nation:ans Whereas, the State of Illinoisshall set apert a day known as "American Indian Day" in recognition of the many contributions of the American Indians to the economic and cultural heritage of all the Citizens of the United States:and Whereas, American Indian Day is also held to honor all American Indians and Native Americans who have fought, servrd, and worked to make the United States the greatest country in the world; and Whereas, the years before the arrivalof Christopher Columbus saw the rise of an abundance agriculturally based Indian civilization with true urban centers, monumental public works, and ruling classes; and Whereas, During the period of European colonization, American Indian societies and tribes within the present continental United States were intergrated through interconnecting political, economic, social, and religious obligations and support systems provided by families or kinshipgroups; and Whereas, Through European Colonization, most tribes were forced to sell their lands, moveed to new territory, and subjected to forced acculturation programs by the federal government; many other tribes remain on reservations or tribal lands within their own homelands, where they retain many of their cultural patterns and traditional values; therefore, be it Resolved, By the House of Representatives of the Ninrty Second General Assembly of the State of Illinois, that we honor American Indians for their contributions to American heritage, and for their optimism and pride in this great nation, we do hereb declare September 1, 2001, and each Serptember1 thereafter, as American Indian Day in the State of Illinois, and be it further Resolved, That a suitable copy of this resolution be displayed at the Chicago Cultural Center ans a suitable copy be delivered to Cleatus Lee Murdaugh of the Southern Cherokee Tribe.

The problem this government has a guilty conscience, by the ways it stole the land, and showed no mercy to our ancestors.Other races gets federal recognition, but do we? We say NO!Our people were here first, long before the white man came and ravaged our people and this land. Martin Luther King, got federal recognition for the black people. But do we get it ? absolutely not!All it takes is a majority, but the majority are those in the senate that have self intrests. Recognize and act to give honor to our ancestors, that we as a people, proud of our culture, deserve federal recognition, afterall we were here first. Bill Eagle Martin
