STOP THE DANGEROUS AND INVASIVE MOTHERS ACT
The MOTHERS ACT is a bill before the Senate, already passed by the House with only 3 "no" votes, which sets up a nation-wide screening and "education" campaign to encourage "antidepressant" drugs and other psychiatric drugs to pregnant and new moms. If this passes, we could see similar drugging rates to that of the non-mandated Teen Screen program, which results in prescriptions for 90% of people who take the screening test.
The FDA Confirms that "antidepressant" drugs double the risk of suicide (at minimum) while numerous medical studies suggest the risk of suicide and violence against others is astronomically high on an antidepressant.
Antidepressants have also been proven to be no more effective than placebo. Additionally they pose a serious threat to babies whose mothers take them during pregnancy and nursing, with pregnancy exposure behind many cases of spontaneous abortion, preterm birth, stillbirth, and serious birth defects and SIDS.

To the HELP Committee of the United States Senate:
For years, the March of Dimes has warned not to use meds while pregnant. Why now encourage mothers to take drugs?
Please register this extreme objection to the proposed MOTHERS Act (S. 1375) which is now before you in committee. It is my earnest hope that you will immediately defeat this bill in committee. The bill has been brought to you under the guise of ensuring safety or support for new mothers- however, nothing could be further from the truth.
The bill was originally proposed in response to the death by suicide of Melanie Stokes, a pharmaceutical rep. who took her own life by leaping from a balcony several stories off of the ground. Contrary to popular understanding it was not post-partum depression that killed Melanie, but the numerous antidepressant drugs she was taking, which the FDA confirmed double the suicide risk.
Nobody is suggesting that new moms do not ever experience mood swings, depression, or even psychotic episodes. The more important issue is what the effect of this bill will be and why nobody is addressing potential methods of prevention. Everyone knows how many young moms experience gestational diabetes, but who is addressing the even higher rate of gestational hypoglycemia, which often initially manifests as depression? This is a physical condition that is treated with diet and is exacerbated by antidepressants (which list hypoglycemia as a side effect).
To simply screen women for post-partum mood disorders and ensure that they get "treatment," we would be setting families up for the expectation of tragedy and increasing the chances of that actually happening when we refer them to medical "professionals" who are oblivious to the negative mind-altering effects of psychiatric drugs. A popular opinion among medical caregivers these days is that "post-partum mood disorders" must be a sign of an underlying biochemical imbalance and would be corrected with drugs.
Current drugs used on post-partum women include SSRIs, atypical antidepressants, and even antipsychotic drugs. These pose a significant risk to the immediate safety and health of women as well as their children and families. SSRIs carry a black box warning for suicide and the most popular one, Effexor (the same med. Andrea Yates was taking when she drowned her 5 children), has the words %u201Chomicidal ideation%u201D listed as a side effect. Nearly every recent case of infanticide which has made news can be clearly linked back to a psychiatric drug. These drugs endanger babies and mothers.
Additionally, the drugs can be extremely addictive and also pose a risk to nurslings or babies exposed in subsequent pregnancies. Some babies have died from SIDS linked to exposure from pregnancy or nursing; others have experienced coma, seizures, GI bleeding, heart defects, lung problems, and many babies died before reaching full term or soon after birth.
The bill does not address the fact that studies show that biological agents (antidepressants for example) cited in the bill and already prescribed to pregnant women can cause congenital heart birth defects where children have had to undergo open-heart surgeries to correct this. Also, some babies are being born with organs outside their bodies, requiring immediate surgery.
In closing I want to re-emphasize the total lack of any real answer to post-partum depression posed by this bill. If we can prevent post-partum depression or support moms through it, or offer proven SAFE and EFFECTIVE natural alternatives to dangerous drugs, then we should. However we should never, ever become party to a pharmaceutical campaign to push drugs on the public. We will set ourselves up for disaster if we allow an invasion into the privacy of every family in the country and suggest to our most vulnerable citizens that they might be mentally ill.
We must do everything in our power to protect innocent children, and giving their mothers addictive drugs which pose a significant risk of causing suicide and violence does not protect anyone. It does cause the child to become addicted while still in the womb and sets up drug dependence which can be lifelong.
We still have no idea what effect most drugs have on developing brains. It might take decades for the impact on the developing brain to become apparent.

Note: despite claims of minimal exposure to nurslings by some health professionals, the data on "safety" of nursing a baby while taking SSRIs and antipsychotics is based on an extremely small sample (nevermind that serious adverse events have been observed even in the few studies actually done). II. Prevention of Post-Partum Mood Disorders:
A. Avoid interventions in childbirth: HOME BIRTH or midwifery or otherwise natural childbirth statistically results in LESS PPD...
Mothers Can Avoid (Specifically):
1. Labor drugs, including pitocin which interferes with normal oxytocin stimulation of uterine contractions (oxytocin is the love hormone and sets off many chemicals in the brain associated with normal maternal bonding & protective behavior)
2. IVs with glucose water during labor which can lead to complications in the newborn like perceived excessive weight loss, hypoglycemia, thus creating "mommy guilt" from feeling as if she is unable to sustain her own baby's survival due to perceived inadequate milk supply and subsequent breastfeeding difficulty when baby is inevitably given supplemental feedings
3. Avoid epidural which can cause breastfeeding difficulties in the newborn and may be associated with mood problems (the anesthesia fentanyl in the epidural is derived from cocaine)
4. Avoid episiotomy which can lead to excessive blood loss and fatigue as well as significant pain leading to use of pain medications
5. Avoid restrictive dieting before / after childbirth which can cause preterm labor (not having enough calories and protein leads to low albumin and high blood pressure), low blood sugar and lack of energy
6. Avoid epinephrine, which is often necessary in labor because of fetal distress or maternal distress (trouble breathing, low blood pressure) which are side effects in both mom and baby from pitocin or other augmentation as well as epidurals. Epinephrine is synthetic adrenaline and has been linked to mental disturbances.
B. Post-partum period:
1. FOR MANY WEEKS MOMS WILL NEED: someone to help with meals, chores, child care, etc. Without that, women ARE FAR MORE LIKELY to feel "symptoms" of depression, anxiety, etc.
2. MOMS WILL NEED someone to help with breastfeeding if they are inexperienced or have problems. They can contact a La Leche League Leader or an IBCLC. Loss of breastfeeding is sometimes associated with PPD due to additional hormonal changes in moms, while breastfeeding itself is thought to ease PPD due to numerous factors.
3. MOMS (and families) WILL FEEL BETTER if they cosleep because they will be well-rested and breastfeeding will be easier. For safety tips on cosleeping moms can use common sense or write to amy@uniteforlife.org for more info. Contrary to campaigns by the Crib Manufacturers SIDS is actually more common in cribs.
III. Alternatives to Drugs:
1. Screen for underlying medical conditions such as Thyroid disorders, anemia, etc. and treat those as safely as is possible. Thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism (or both - postpartum thyroiditis) are quite common and can cause depression or anxiety. Often the first sign of hypoglycemia is depression which can be handled by eating often - 6 small meals per day helps keep the blood sugar level normal.
2. Omega 3 Supplements (From Fish Oil, Flaxseed, etc.)
3. Exercise (although initially excessive exercise will not help a woman, after childbirth it is necessary to rest in order to recover, and not lose too much blood)

4. Some people feel that counseling is effective
5. Some people find alternative treatments effective, for example: chiropractic, homeopathy (even for PSYCHOSIS), accupuncture, energy work, etc.
6. MOMS can FIND A SUPPORT GROUP or helpful PERSON but NOT one that will push them to use drugs.
IV. Alternative Ways to Support American Families:
If the government really wants to help moms, why not educate on these common sense strategies, push for better maternity leave allowances, improve obstetric cooperation with midwifery, or promote paternity leave or leave for grandparents who can help new mothers during their time of need?
V. The Bill Violates Basic American Principles and Rights:
Mothers want time in PEACE and PRIVACY to be with their new babies to bond. They DO NOT need to be dragged off to an invasive and dangerous screening for mental problems. The power of suggestion alone is enough to scare a significant amount of moms and this invasion of privacy goes far beyond anything EVER imposed on the U.S. Public.
Furthermore, similar programs like Teen Screen have been a total failure with an 84% or higher misdiagnosis rate. The vast majority of these misdiagnosed students were referred to mental health practitioners and put on drugs.

Additional Critiques of the Bill
==================
There is no language in the bill that protects thousands of mothers being erroneously screened and drugged with antidepressants that medical studies show cause birth defects and withdrawal symptoms, devastating families and driving up health care costs to treat these iatrogenic-caused conditions.
The bill seeks more appropriations to the National Institutes of Health to research postpartum depression but doesn't specify how the funds are to be used. For example, during the past 3 years, NIMH has already spent more than $10 million on 38 studies of PPD, yet the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine lists no grants on its website for such research.
There is no language about the diverse medical opinion and studies about "post partum depression" and whether it exists as a mental disability or as a physical condition that can be treated by normal medical or alternative means.
While the bill promotes more research into the condition, it doesn't provide safeguards about this research and the effects of biological agents on the fetus--with studies suggesting that antidepressants may exert an impact on developmental processes of the embryo, and cause higher rates of premature delivery, low birth weight, admissions to intensive care units, and poor neonatal adaptation, including respiratory and feeding difficulties in infants.
The way in which the bill is currently worded could lead to thousands of suits as hundreds have already been filed concerning antidepressant use during pregnancy that has resulted in infants being born with a life-threatening lung disorder, PPHN and that between 10% and 20% of infants born with PPHN end up dying, even when they receive treatment.

I am against all forced treatment in the mental health system because money is always the bottom line, all at the expense of human life and human suffering.
Do not take yet another choice from us.
I disagree with any legislation that is on screening of pregnant women, or new mother's for Post Partum Depression. My brother in law is an OB-GYN and I know from him, that there is plenty of opportunity available to women for treatment without there having to be legislation on it. Sincerely, Barbara Moulton
My son was under the care of the State of South Dakota and placed on abilify. I fought this with all my might--he was on suicide watch in June, and they would not take him off this drug. He committed suicide Oct. 14, 2008. Can anyone offer me help for my dead son?
It is becoming more acceptable especially in the UK that Prozac should be the choice of 'last resort'. To give pregnant mothers any type of antidepressant will obviously effect the unborn child. Obviously in exceptional circumstances a mother may require treatment for depression, but it has been accepted for years that no medication should be given to the mother especially in the first trimester as the unborn feotus can be affected. This bill should be stopped immediately and much more research into alternative therapies should be considered.
I oppose this act and consider it an invasion of privacy and a denial of basic freedom to make our own health and treatment choices. How ironic that this act is named after a woman who committed suicide because of antidepressants.
Diagnosing depression without a method for physical measurement is arbitrary and capricious. It will lead to opportunistic abuse, misdiagnosis with irreversible documentation in computerized records, drugging with irreversible side effects, and personal devastation to victims and their families. The side effects of these drugs have been hidden by the drug companies and those who support them. These effects are severe: death, irreversible damage to the brain, tardive dyskinesia, addiction with severe withdrawal effects.
The pharmaceutical companies are "stealing" our loved ones with these poisons that they are pushing. PLEASE don't give up our freedom of choice, do not let this bill pass.
I was encouraged to continue taking Prozac during my pregnancy and afterwards, even though I nursed my child. I trusted my doctor and took the medication, because I did not want a relapse of major depression to affect my ability to care for my child. Early on, she displayed exaggerated startle response, which lasted much longer than the normal newborn phase. She had her first seizure at 8mos, second one at 15mos, and third at 18mos. She was always very difficult to comfort(very unlike my first three children), she has extreme seizurelike temper tantrums, she is paranoid, she has extreme mood swings, difficulty with peer and family relationships, and an abnormal reponse to stress. She is stuck in a negative outlook on life. she talks frequently about wanting to die. Her environment is not consistent with her behavioral responses to it. We all try so hard to help her, and sometimes she seems to be getting better, only to return to her extremes of behavior. Daily I have to reassure her that I will always love her and accept her. Her sadness, and her inability to control her emotions breaks my heart on a daily basis. Then to discover that her problems are most likely related to the irresponsible prescribing of antidepressants to me as a pregnant and then a nursing mother is a crime that needs to be punished. Drugs never have and never will solve spiritual/mental ills. There are effective solutions to these problems but, such treatment should never be in the hands of non-religious feilds such as government or medicine. We cannot stand by and do nothing as more and more of our population at younger ages are but on mind & body altering drugs for no physically diagosable reason! Who has it ever really helped?
It is never a good idea to force anyone into a specific medical treatment (informed consent??) and it is usually a good idea for government to get out of the area of medicine.
This is a very dangerous bill
My niece started receiving psychiatric medications at the age of 4 after being diagnosed "bi-polar and ADHD". Diagnosed at 4, at an age that she was dealing with issues such as an absent, drug addicted mother and removal from a home she grew up in for the first 3 years of her life. Mood swings are to be expected in these circumstances, not bipolar. She is now 9 and is receiving dosages of Lithium and Zoloft that exceed any of the adults I know. She is now gaining an average of 15 pounds every three months and has little self esteem left. As an educator I am witnessing so many of the red flags I have been trained to identify in my young students. Red flags that are all pointing to the loss of my beautiful niece through a future drug dependency, inability to have meaningful relationships, or my worst fear - suicide. Her step-mother and father are young parents whom trust a doctor to solve all of the child's problems with drugs he's being paid to prescribe. Please stop this madness for Alexis and all of the children I see in the classroom who have lost their identities to excessive prescription of psychiatric drugs. Our future needs people who have learned to problem solve without drugs.
I am aware of the causes of depression, including post-partum, and it is a function of the reactive mind, which records all moments of pain and unconsciousness, including birth, and then later, when restimulated, as in when the mother is already tired, the baby cries, is unhappy, etc. In those moments, the depression (restimulation she cannot 'see' without the proper guided therapy) sets in, and becomes worse. There is a solution to/for this, and that is to have the birth 'run out', after which time, the restim is not going to occur, as the recordation of it in the reactive mind is now gone, and the imagery of birth is now recoreded in the conscious mind, known as the analytical mind. The truth is not a lot it known about how the mind works, and to further debilitate a person with psychotropic drugs is not the solution. These worsen the problem at the time, and set the stage for later 'depressions', as now there is an additional unconsciousness being delivered to the mind via the drugs. This is not acceptable to the essence of a beingness, and no one has a right to do it to another.
Any candidate for office who supports this legislation will definitely lose my vote. People all over the world need to realize what psychiatry is and what it wants: EVERYONE on drugs -- men, women, and children.
I am watching who is getting contributions from Pharmaceutical companies. Probably the same folks who are taking them and trying to justify it to themselves. You'll lose my vote considerably. I dont want to train new moms to take pills so that they can teach this to their children.

"Natural Rights" let's not go backwards our face is on the front of us for a reason. Very very careful analysis from a variety of medical directions including examination and integration of Mind-Body Medicine that integrates Oriental Medicine techniques & therapies. There is a very fine line between actual clinical depression and profound sadness. A wholistic perinatal health care team must to be involved. Too many of the medications used to treat depression have toxic side effects on both mother and her growing fetus. What with the rate of un-necessary ceaseran surgeries each year, the fact that one out of three women are influenced to elect to have a ceaseran surgery (inhibiting wholistic bonding for mother and baby) and the fact that more and more OBs learning only high-tech birthing techniques and having never see the benefits of homebirthing or birthing center birthing, this bill horrifies me to even think of the possible ramifications if this bill would pass. I totally support these efforts to stop this bill, too many existing problems with pharmaceuticals that are being recalled and too many toxins already for infants to face, i.e., toxins in lining of formula cans and plastic bottles! We must be responsible and prevent the introduction of toxins and cancer causing illnesses in utero, thus preventing serious health issues later in life.

for what good reason would you pass this bill, the FORCED drugging of mothers and their unborn children is just vile!!! And the fact that these drugs don't work is another point, these are not anti-psychotics that work but have nasty side effects, these are a class of placebo that uses the unpleasant side effects to convince you the drug must doing something, otherwise it wouldn't make feel so lousy, these are punishment drugs used to make you learn to stop complaining, you lie and tell the doctor you feel better and he loweres the dose and you actually feel better after that, which teaches the patient to stop telling the truth and pretend to be happy to be undrugged, not what you would call medical treatment as much as medical abuse, some thing our countries leaders don't seem to care about, seeing how your all worried about the insurance rates of doctors rather than asking why so many doctors are incapable of doing their job right, which is the real problem here.
What is our country coming to? Where is the freedom that our soldiers are fighting for, to do as we please when we please. Is this country still a democracy or are the pharmaceuticals going to be allowed to control it?
I was forcibly drugged after suffering severe sleep deprivation while I was a nursing mom. The drugs took away my libido and gave me urinary problems. Even though I've been off of them for over 25 years, I still suffer from permanant genital anesthesia. The dangers of psychiatric drugs is real. No one should ever be forced to take them.

As a former woman on anti-depression drugs, I know from first hand experience that they make things worse for many women. Women are not fully informed of the dangers, the side effects, or the necessity to wean off of these drugs very, very slowly. Indeed, not even psychiatrists, much less family physicians, seem to realize the proper way to wean anyone off these kinds of drugs. I can only plead for the women of the world that you do not pass this horrible intrusive bill however well-meant it may be. Drugs are a business, and government has no right to be involved in business. They already are way too much - with disastrous results yet to be fully realized. Same with this bill. Leave our health freedom alone!!

I was a therapist for a number of years and am well aware of the fact that without appropriate support from a therapist, while taking antidepressants, many people are at risk for suicide. However, since regular MDs can prescribe psychotropic medications without any training in psychotherapy beyond some basics, most people just get the drugs and no support. I am completely against the blatant prescription of medications. There are too many non-chemical methods of reducing anxiety and depression.
if i don't say anything about this what does that say about my creator who created me and my sincerity towards life and do no harm. this is happening now and can stop with continued vigilance and the time to stop such atrocities is now i gladly sign this petition and pray our leaders listen and if not get out of the way to stop this . There is NO price you can put on a child and its mothers life.The cons of these drugs HEAVILY outweigh pros.I know this from my own personal experience(s) with them-if i could go back-i would have NEVER taken medications for my ppd-NEVER.
The Mother's Act reads like simple "feel good" legislation; however the invasive and paternalistic impact would be profound. This is the foolishness of federally funded interventions into the mood of the nursery. New mothers often benefit from extra support from family and friends -- government mandated "help" is less than helpful.
I am a mother of 2 young girls and I do not want mandatory drugging to be the legacy I leave them. Please do not allow the Mother's Act to pass. Please say no to the Coburn Omnibus. Please circulate among listservs and individuals. The Mothers Act derives from the New Jersey Postpartum Depression (PPD) Law. BOTH LEGISLATIVE FORMULATIONS ARE MARKEDLY ILLEGAL AND UNETHICAL. Full informed consent provisions are absent in both instances. Many significant criticisms have been leveled regarding medical, medication and other issues.
