Help Save E. Wood

This petition is about freedom and democracy.
We understand the importance of having a voice, but it is essential that our voice is allowed to be heard.
Every November we buy a poppy and pay our respects to those who fought so valiantly to defend our freedom. So many people selflessly sacrificed their own life, so that future generations could enjoy living in a healthy democratic society.
Maurice Wood, of E.Wood Butchers, 53 Barnsbury Street, London is being bullied into closing down his family butchers that was founded by his grandfather in 1909. Islington Council have granted planning permission for an electrical substation to be built just one metre away from Maurice's premises. Maurice is not willing to risk his customers' health by having a substation so close to his butchers and so he will be forced to prematurely shut down his business.
This is a genuinely tragic situation. Maurice, like his grandfather and father before him, hasn't run his business simply to line his own pocket. They have spent their lives running an amazing butchers shop, whilst also providing a dutiful service to their community.
During last summer, hundreds of people signed a petition supporting Maurice's objection to the building of the electrical substation so close to his property. Many of whom also wrote letters of complaint to the Council, some even attended the final Council Planning Meeting. However, these people were not even allowed to speak at the meeting.
Is this the democracy that our forebears fought for? How can an elected council allow a hard-working, decent person to have his livelihood destroyed? And treat the opinions of the people that it purports to serve with so much disdain, that they are not even allowed to speak on matters that directly concern their community?
We have not just been ignored, we have been silenced. And most critically, we have been denied our freedom of speech.
We cannot have democracy, if we are not allowed to speak.
The thoughtless and short-sighted actions of a few, mean that a considerate and caring gentleman will lose his livelihood, the community will be deprived of one of its key social figures and everyone will soon miss a kind-hearted friend.
If you care about freedom and democracy, please sign this petition and encourage your friends and family to do likewise.
And help us Save E.Wood.
Thank You.
We the undersigned are unhappy and dissatisfied with the manner that Maurice Wood, of E. Wood, 53 Barnsbury Street and his numerous loyal customers who voiced their support for him, have been treated.
Many people spent considerable time and effort in trying to help Maurice and by doing so showed how much they care about their community. Sadly these numerous objections have thus far been ignored.
This petition is a further demonstration of how passionately we support Maurice's plight and the premature closure of his business will make our community the poorer.
We ask you to reconsider the planning permission granted to build the electrical substation right next to E. Wood's premises.
Thank you for taking the time to read our letter.
