Osceola County Animal Control is trying to take the horses of a wonderful lady who has worked hard to get them back into shape after they were mistreated by the boarder she was paying to take care of them. Laurie Wolf was moving to Saint Cloud FL from Ocala FL and she asked the non profit organization Forever Florida, to board her horses. She paid them for four months of grain and care, while she finished her move, and could get into her home. When she came down a week before she was supposed to move completely, she arrived unannounced at Forever Florida to visit her horses. She was devistated when she saw her champion horses that she had cared for, most from birth, had not been fed properly and were underweight. She immediately removed them and was able to find a temporary pasture to keep them, at a feed store in Saint Cloud. She contacted Animal Control, and informed them that her horses had been mistreated at a boarders, and were now underweight. They gave her 6 months to make visible improvement. I live near this store, and see these horses daily. They have gone from skin and bones, to just a slight rib ripple on their sides. This is not an easy task - when a horse gets underweight, it is a long process to bring them back up! I have gone with her while she makes her feeding rounds, and she pampers her babies, and they eat better than she does! She has receipts for hundreds of dollars worth of food, vet care, and farrier care. Her vet, the one who has treated the horses since they arrived in Saint Cloud, has tried to meet with Animal Control, and they never show up. He has given his approval of her efforts, and said their improvement is better than he though it would be in only 6 months. She has one, ONE older horse, he is over 20 years old, who is still a bit thin (not much I have seen him myself, it is mostly his age that makes him look a bit thin) and this is the horse Animal Control has told her they are going to confiscate ALL her horses over. She has proof of the care she gives them, and they don't care. The interesting part is that the man who runs the feed store where they are pastured has tried to get her to sell him the horses many times. He doesn't understand these are not 'just horses', these are her family! So now, he has told her that if she signs the horses over to him, they wont take them. this makes no sense to me, and sounds rather shady on both parts. If they don't think the horses are in shape to be with the person who loves and cares for them, why would they suddenly be fine to be with him??
To get to the point (finally, I thank you for sticking with me, I know this is long!) They have told her today (5/24/09) they are taking her taking her horses on Tuesday (5/26/09) despite the care she has given, the progress they have made, and the recommendation of a veterinarian to leave them with her. This is an outrage, and it means that no matter the care we give, Animal Control can come and take our animals no matter what!! Please help this wonderful woman keep her family!!! Thank You.Dear City Officials,
We would like to bring a matter to your attention that we find deeply disturbing. Osceola County Animal Control is trying to take the horses of a wonderful lady (Laurie Wolf)who has worked hard to get them back into shape after they were mistreated by the boarder she was paying to take care of them.
When she moved them from the boarder, and into a temporary pasture, she informed Osceola County Animal Control (Carrie) what the horses had been through, and what she was doing to rectify the situation, and improve her horses.
the Animal Control officer gave her 6 months to show improvement and continued care. In this time the horses weight has increased greatly, and she has receipts to show the food, vet and farrier care she has provided them during this time. The vet has tried to meet with the officer many times, and they never show up.
In spite of all the care, and improvement, and vet reccomendation that they stay with her, the Animal Control officer has informed her she will still be taking her horses. The officer has told the owner of the store they are pastured with, that if she signs them over to him, they will not take the horses.
This makes no sense, and sounds rather shady on both parts. If they don't think the horses are in shape to be with the person who loves and cares for them, why would they suddenly be fine to be with someone else??
