No Death Penalty for Jared Loughner!

  • by: Keisha Bickel
  • recipient: Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, Arizona District Attorney Barbara LaWall

Jared Loughner, 23, is the alleged shooter in the Tucson, Arizona shootings of January 8, 2011. 19 people were shot including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 6 of those 19 were killed on that tragic day. Jared Loughner has been diagnosed with Undifferentiated Schizophrenia and suffers from hallucinations and delusions, among other symptoms from his illness. This illness and the delusions alter his reality to where he is unable to understand what is real and what is not. He is currently being held at a Medical Center for Federal Prisoners and is being forcibly medicated with an antipsychotic (Risperidone), two anti-anxiety medications (Lorazepam and Alprazolam - the latter as needed),  a medication (Benzatropine) used to treat the tremors caused by the other medications, anti-seizure medication (Clonazepam) to reduce the side effects from the other drugs, and an anti-depressant (Bupropione XL). MCFP has Jared in administrative segregation. Jared is almost always in his (approx. 8' x 10') cell and receives his meals through a slot in his door. He only gets out for a short time to exercise and to attend a group therapy that he attends with other inmates. His light is always on in his cell and cameras are monitoring him 24/7. His psychologist says he is more compassionate, logical, showing better communication skills, his delusions and hallucinations are disappearing, he is more coherent, linear, making more eye contact, and he is very remorseful since being medicated. Although, he is still depressed. It is not yet known whether or not the Prosecutors are intending to persue the death penalty for Jared, but this petition is to try and prevent them from doing so. Please sign and help Jared, this ill young man,  continue to receive the treatment he needs and help spare his life rather than punish him because of his illness. We should not cause more suffering. We also must not forget that he is the only son of his parents. There's no reason to continue the cycle of pain and violence by executing a psychologically ill person. Please have compassion & humanity. Be the change you want to see in the world.

"As for me, you must know that I shouldn't precisely have chosen madness if there had been any choice" - Vincent Van Gogh

We the undersigned people, respectfully request that the death penalty is not pursued for Jared Loughner. He is the alleged Tucson, Arizona shooter and is psychologically ill. It has not yet been said as to whether or not the death penalty is the sentence the Prosecutor seeks, but this petition is to help prevent them from doing so.
Jared's illness, diagnosed as undifferentiated schizophrenia, impairs his thinking and actions. It is cruel, inhumane, and unjust to sentence him to death. He should not be punished for his illness & the effects therefrom, rather, he should continue to be in such a place as Medical Center for Federal Prisoners (where he is now) to treat him. This type of medical center can prevent him from being a danger to himself and others, as well as give him the treatment he has long needed.
The victims are receiving compassion and understanding, so that should be extended to Jared just the same as he is a victim too. It is wrong to have compassion for someone who has been shot in the head and may suffer a psychological impairment, and not extend the same to another who also suffers but was instead born with the psychological impairment. That is unjust.
The death penalty does not make anything better, it only makes things worse by causing more pain and suffering. We stand firmly, morally and very strongly against the death penalty for Jared Loughner. If we don't start helping those in need, then nothing will ever change for the better.
We must be the change we want to see in the world. President Barack Obama, "hope and change" was a part of your presidential campaign. Together we can make a change for the better. To quote you, President Obama, "Yes we can!". Please, help make a real difference and spare young Jared Loughner's life from the death penalty. Thank you for your compassion and your urgent attention to this very important issue, as well as for helping to make a great change. "Yes we can!"
