The Diocese of Trenton has decided to close 3 local Catholic schools in the bayshore area. St. Joseph, St Ann's & Holy family in June.  Their decision is based on the economy and their belief that enrollment in the schools will decrease in the upcoming years because not enough families will be able to afford the tuitions.   There are many reasons this decision is upsetting. Our children who are upperclassmen and women and would have been graduating within one or two years, all the friendships that have been made by students and parents alike, families who have been coming here for generations, and so on. But one of the most upsetting aspects of this decision is that the Diocese has left us with no nearby Catholic school to send our children. And this is something that the parents are not ready to accept.

We the undersigned, feel it is imperative to the future of Catholic Education in the Bayshore of NJ to keep St. Joseph School open.  By closing 3 schools in the Bayshore the diocese has left the Catholic families from towns such as Aberdeen, Matawan, Cliffwood Beach, Keyport, Hazlet, Union Beach, Keansburg, North Middletown, Port Monmouth and Belford no reasonable way to continue in Catholic Education for their families.  The alternative Catholic  schools are either inaccessible to daily commutes or overcrowded.  We understand the value of regionalizing and fully understand the cost of maintaining these 3 schools.  However, Mother Theresa Regional is at the far South end of this area and many times as much as 30 minutes the wrong way for many of our comuting needs.

We understand that St Joseph's has increased the number of students to the acceptable range set forth by the diocese.  We also understand that funds have been raised to an excess of $47,000.  While we are encouraged by these numbers, we feel that they will increase substantially should it be announced that the diocese supports the school remaining open.  The vigor and commitment of the Alumni and parents of St Joseph's should also be noted as they are willing to do whatever they can to keep this tradition alive in Keyport, NJ.

This school was founded by the Sisters of St. Francis to educate the working Catholic families of this nautical area.  It has a long tradition of serving Catholic immigrants and the less privileged.  The works of charity and the commitment to spread the truths of our universal faith are instilled in our children in this school whether it be through the number of collections and food drives for the poor of the area, blankets for the homeless or supporting our sister school in Haiti.  Please do not take that away from our children.

Please reconsider your decision on St Joseph's and allow our Catholic Faith to flourish in the next generation of the Bayshore.  Who knows what great  works our Lord will channel through these children.
