A starving, sick street dog was as part of an exposition in Managua, Nicaragua, in August. Guillermo Vargas Habacuc found the dog tied up on a street corner in a poor Nicaragua barrio. Guillermo Vargas Habacuc then paid children to catch the dog. Guillermo Vargas Habacuc then brought it to the 'showing'. The dog was not given food or water and died the dog in a corner of the salon where it died the following day.

This should not go on in your country. Let's be civilized when it comes to art. Letting a dog die in front of people is not art.
Please tell government officials for the Republic of Costa Rica why it is wrong to purposely cause harm to an animal.
You need to clear your country of this mess and put those responsible behind bars!
Costa Rica! Remind me not to visit. "Come to Costa Rica we torture domesticated animals, for money;" sooo nice!

This brings tears to my eyes and pain to my heart. PLEASE! Do EVERYTHING in your power to ensure this never happens again! This poor creature should have been freed! This is shocking, please, please help to ensure nothing like this ever happens again!! Animals are independent, free, and part of the natural ecosystem. They should NOT be imprisoned and tortured, starved, and left to die prisoners. Dr. Oscar Arias Sanchez, please do EVERYTHING to make sure this does not EVER recur! I pray for this dog! |
animals have feelings too and this is just evil and sick
I don't believe any living thing should be treated in such a fashion. Would you treat another human being this way? These animals are not dumb and they feel pain, hunger, thirst the same as you and I. This was a terrible death for this animal.
Animal abuse is to be condemned everywhere
As human beings, we all have a sacred duty to nurture and protect life. This is part of what it means to be human. To wantonly and willfully kill an animal for sport goes against the grain - whether the death is from dog fighting, or from cruelly allowing an animal to starve to death. And for someone to claim they are allowing a dog to starve in the name of "art" is horrible. Please take steps to make sure this never happens again.
If a government official needs an explanation as to why it is wrong to harm an animal then we should be wondering how/why they got in this position in the first place. Don't positions of these calibers require some sort of intelligence? I do believe that is a "yes!" and in which case most intelligent people I know don't need an explanation as to why it's wrong to harm an animal. Why does the Costa Rican govt need this explained to them?
Starving a creature for the sake of "artistic expression" is sadistic and wrong. Torturing nd killing helpless animals without remore is one of the most dangerous signs that one is a sociopath: if this artist is willing to "express himself" through the murder of this creature, what's next? People? He is a threat to your society if he is not limited in his expresison now.
Dear Sirs, as you will read from my note above, I am saddened and disgusted that the mistreatment of the dog at the gallery was not only not stopped in its tracks, but apparently condoned by the lack of action from government officials. Putting aside the basic wrong of deliberate acts of wanton cruelty or neglect to any animal or human, no matter what the circumstances, there is a simple economic reason why you need to stop this in its tracks by a program of neutering and animal treatment through the humane society or WSPA - much of Costa Rica's income derives from tourism, and tourists are sickened and appalled by these acts. Not only will they not return, they will tell their friends not to visit either, and, as in this case, will post their outrage on the internet for the whole world to see. This act of narcissism by the artist, and the fact that not one person did anything to stop it says a lot about the people in your country - none of it good. Through my work as a writer on prestige international publications I will ensure that the world does not stop hearing about this until you take positive steps to treat all animals and people with dignity and compassion. I hope that the world's outrage at this case will make the government and people of Costa Rica take a fresh approach to managing the problem of stray animals. It is not their fault they are in this position, and the question is how any person in the Costa Rican government, the gallery's owners, its patrons, and especially the artist would like to be treated in a similar matter. Chained to a wall, frightened, hungry, thirsty and mocked a circumstance you had no control over. Think about it. I can't stop, and it makes me sick. I beg that you will please call in WSPA and the Humane Society for help with this problem, and begin an education program about the value animals bring to all of our lives, and the value of mercy, kindness and compassion. It seems Coasta Ricans are sorely in need of the help. Sincerely Rachel Sullivan
We have a responsibility for morality. This is disgusting. It is a morbid example of a human beings attidude of dominion over other creatures. A bowl of water and a small meal could have made a huge difference. But instead he chose to torture a helpless animal. Who on earth could respect that? I am an artist. I live and work with artists. We see nothing artistic about it. Just because somthing makes you FEEL does not mean it's art. Not even close.
This is Sick, just sick... These people should be punished by law for this act in your country.
