Threatened by Demolition

Save Orlando's History

Target:
Stop Demolition of Historic Building by Orlando's St Jame's School
Orlando's historic resources continue to be threatened by demolition.  From the Dolive Building on Orange Ave, Hillman house at 334 Broadway Ave, the Washington St. homes on Lake Eola and now the church building across the street from the St. James Cathedral School at Cathcart Ave and Ridgewood St.

It is the opinion of this neighborhood association that any deteriorated condition of this building is due to the inaction of the Catholic Diocese and can be readily corrected for the proposed cost of the demolition and any future new development costs.

Demolition not only erases Orlando's physical connection with its past it also is detrimental to the environment as materials are thrown into a landfill and any replacement development requires the energy for fabrication, delivery and assembly.  The school's cry "safety for the children" rings hollow.

Do not reward demolition by neglect with approval; this demolition is wrong for our heritage and wrong for our environment.

Orlando's Historic Preservation Board will hear the church's request for demolition on August 6th at 4pm in City Council Chambers. (free parking available across the street).  Following the outcome of this hearing the item will be heard by Orlando City Council in the near future.

Let Orlando's leaders know by signing and sending this petition.

Re:       Request to demolish the Central Christian Church at 331 Cathcart Ave.

Dear Commissioner Sheehan;

We the undersigned are very much concerned about the request to demolish the Central Christian Church at 331 Cathcart Avenue.  This edifice is a beautiful and contributing structure to the Lake Eola Height Historic District and the City of Orlando.

The building has suffered from the recent neglect by the current owners who purchased it in 1999 for $10.  Please do not let this significant part of our community%u2019s culture and the historic district be lost.

We would appreciate whatever support you can provide to keep this building from being demolished.

Thank you for your time and especially for safe-guarding Orlando%u2019s historic resources.

Please stop this. There are worse buildings that have been saved and restored. Demolition is an easy way out and will not save in overall costs. Plus, all the debris will go and add more to our landfills.

I can't understand how they could demolish a church. That is the house of the Lord. We are having the same problem here in New York City. Please come and sign our petiton too. www.saveourladyofloreto.com

Preserve historic districts and do not allow the real estate speculationists and others without any roots in our city as just so much disposable goods that they can trade in and dispose at will, without thought or care about the impact on the neighborhood or the city as a whole.

The city should make sure that historic buildings a not allowed to decay. Then to allow an owner to demolish them after the neglect of their responsibility is also neglect on the City's part. Any entity should be covered by the same rules that we all abide by. It is especially disheartening St. James choses to be poor stewards of the gracious gift of this historic building.

THis building needs to remain. It needs to be a community center. We keep chipping away at our neighborhood until one day we are going to wind up as one big block of concrete and glass.

I lived in zip code 32801 for fifteen years and was disheartened by the tearing down of all the historic houses, so this petition gives me a chance to do something about it.

We are still a "little city" trying to be a big city. Those goals can be achieved if thought is put into the decisions that will need to be made for the future of our communities. Some of the most enchanting towns across the country blend the old with the modern thus attracting various generations. By no means are we a "Downtown Charleston,SC." but we must take the stand to start somewhere. This is not just for us but for the generations after.

I have been involved with Lake Eola Heights Historic Neighborhood Assoc. as a member and a homeowner since the 1980's and helped develop it to the desireable neighborhood it now is. This would not have been possible if we were complacent with every demolition that was requested in our area. It is very important to the heritage of our city to protect these buildings and I ask for your courage to stop this demolition request! Thank YOU!

Please let us save this beautiful, historic building either by helping St. James to restore it or St James putting it up for sale to someone who will renovate it and keep it as a neighborhood gem.

Why doesn't the Vatican demolish the Roman Coliseum too.. I think a meditation garden would fill that space nicely.

First St. James closed off the street in front of their school, interrupting the neighborhood street grid; now they want to demolish an adjoining historic church building in the name of expanding their campus---AGAIN to the detriment of our Lake Eola Heights Neighborhood.

This is unfortunately a sign of our times, to plow ahead and destroy all that is old. Maybe this building could be saved by putting it on a historic registry. We should preserve what little of our past exists!

As a frequent visitor to my friends, woh live in the historic Lake Eola district, I find it a crying shame that in tis day and age, you would want to consider demolishing it. The Catholic Diocese should save this beautiful building. You're going to take away a historic building, thus detriorate the historic essensce of this remarkable neighborhood. In the Southest Texas town of Woodville, they removed all the gothick features of the county court house and now it is nothing but a plain cement building. Don't lose the character of this neighborhood further by destroying this landmark.
