STOP ISRAELI AGGRESSION

STOP ISRAELI AGGRESSION

We the undersigned express our deep concern at the failure of the international community to address the issue of Palestine. Since the creation of the Israeli state in 1948, Palestinians have become refugees in their own land and are continuing to suffer Israeli aggression time and again.

The last of such an episode was the 18 day Gaza war which led to the death of 1330 Palestinians mostly women and children. The UN Security Council resolution 1860 (2009) which called for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire in Gaza was adopted on 08th January 2009, almost 09 days after since the bombardment began. The international community took this many days to contemplate the massive scale of Israeli onslaught on the innocent and mostly unarmed civilians of Gaza. Increasing reports of war crimes committed by the Israeli forces are surfacing yet the UN, the peacekeeper of the world has so far been unable to hold the Israeli state accountable to its atrocities.

A fair and just world is the key to a peaceful world and we demand justice for the atrocities committed by Israel and the sustained deprivation of the Palestinians of their livelihood at the hands of the Israelis. In this instance, we are focusing on the very recent Israeli aggression in Gaza. Let us remind you that from 1967 Israel has been the subject of 138 resolutions - most of these resolutions call upon Israel to comply with basic principles of International law embodied by the UN Charter. But till date Israel has flagrantly violated countless UN resolutions. However the time constraints do not permit us to mention all these resolutions here. A country which owes its own existence to a UN resolution has so defiantly disregarded the authority of the United Nations. Now the accountability and the credibility of the UN depend on how much pressure it is ready to exert on Israel and countries alike that disobey its rulings. If you can apply sanctions on countries like Iran and the North Korea for disobeying your rulings, we do not see any reason why Israel is exempt from the same treatment.

Following is a brief outline of the violations of the Geneva Convention that Israel signed in 1949, a nation which itself has been the victim of the Nazi holocaust.

Article 3 - ...Persons taking no active part in the hostilities shall be... in all circumstances treated humanely...

Article 18 - Civilian hospitals organised to give care to the wounded and sick ... may in no circumstances be the object of attack

Article 32 - Parties are prohibited from causing the physical suffering or extermination of protected persons in their hands.

Article 33 - No protected person may be punished for an offence he or she has not personally committed.

There is compelling evidence that suggests that Israeli military disregarded the laws of war. Its shelling of hospitals, ambulances and targeting aid workers, shelling of the UN school compound, a refugee shelter for the displaced and the wiping out of entire generation of a family - Samouni family, the crime in the village of Khuzza where the Israeli troops fired at unarmed women and children carrying white flags and the use of white phosphorous on the civilian population of Gaza all point to the same conclusion.

According to the Human Rights Watch, Israel has a long record of failing to investigate war crimes committed by its troops and as history have taught us nothing more could be expected of the Israeli regime.

Hence, we call upon you Sir, and the United Nations to act steadfast in your ruling and to see that Israel abides by your ruling. Your organization was formed for the holy purpose of preventing wars and conflicts and to protect the rights of every individual and community. We would also like to see you honor your word when you called the Gaza war 'shocking and totally unacceptable' and called for investigations, but what purpose would an investigation serve if the implicated are not held accountable.

With a change in the US administration and the Israeli regime, perhaps there is a potential for a renewed solution to this longstanding conflict. A solution to this conflict is not only vital for the peoples of both nations, but also for the survival of your organization. The Israeli-Palestine conflict is a stark reality of the undermining of the very basic principles for which the United Nations was founded, as was its predecessor. We, the people from the international community have rested our faith in the ability of your organisation  to avert conflict and to restore peace. Such a faith would wane if the UN fails to deliver the peoples very basic expectation, that of justice. At the same time, we also call upon your organization to bring a decisive halt to the Israeli illegal settlement expansion in the West Bank and to restore the Palestinian land which the Israelis have looted to their rightful owners. We do understand that the road to recovery is still a long way to be successful but the injustice that the Palestinians have suffered at the hands of the Israelis is something the world cannot deny and must be addressed accordingly in order for a successful solution to this conflict.

We thank you for hearing our views and hope that the UN would take concrete steps to end this disastrous conflict which has engulfed half a century.

Sincerely,
