Stop Mass Killing of Strays to Improve City Image!

STOP THE MASS KILLING OF STRAY DOGS IN BELEN (IQUITOS, PERU)!
The past method of getting rid of unwanted animals is via mass distribution of poisoned meat. The animals suffer long, painful deaths. The poison is also destructive to the environment and people living in the area.
This inhumane method was VERY common before Amazon CARES began in 2004. Now it is actually against Peruvian law, although this law is not enforced.
In order to present a better image during an International Conference, the government wants to remove 100 strays from the district. After requesting a proposal to have Amazon CARES care for these animals for a three week period they never responded.
The Belen District is the poorest district in the city of Iquitos, Peru. They are hosting an international conference in March. They want to present a cleaner image to the 15 countries attending the conference.
They recognize the tremendous impact Amazon CARES has had on the region`s ambience, and asked us to remove 100 stray dogs from a specific neighborhood, stating they would pay to help us care for the animals.

Amazon Community Animal Rescue, Education and Safety is the only domestic animal charity and no-kill shelter in the region.

We the undersigned protest any form of mass killing or euthanasia of stray animals for the purpose of presenting a better image during an international conference in March, 2008.
These methods are barbaric and inhumane. The results are painful, slow deaths and damage to the environment and public health and safety.
These actions are against Peruvian law, and we will do all possible to shed light on illegal practices conducted by any local municipality regarding the fate of stray animals.

Si queremos realmente proyectar una BUENA IMAGEN, una matanza violenta y dolorosa de animales es la peor manera de hacerlo. La gente se enterará de lo que pasa y sólo nos tildarán de "peruanos salvajes". Hay maneras y maneras de solucionar problemas de unos seres que están abandonados por la irresponsabilidad y carencia de sensibilidad humana de personas, ellos no pidieron ser traidos al mundo y ser comercializados para luego ser despreciados. Es a las personas a quien hay que educar en este sentido. Y si se tienen que sacrificar, háganlo de manera humanitaria y no "a lo bestia", existen métodos y organizaciones que pueden ayudar a estos fines. De nuevo el facilismo y el interés político convergen para cometer actos criminales. La imágen de las autoridades responsables de tales actos queda ahora por los suelos. Me da vergüenza ajena ...

Un pais que no cuida de sus animales no puede ser civilizado la matanza masiva de perros con metodos crueles inhumanos ( NO HUMANOS) no solo nos revela la pobreza espiritual de los dirigentes de muchas zonas en donde se permite y alienta este vergonzoso proceder, si no tambien la pobreza espiritual de sus habitantes. Sitios llamados "civilizados" como Lima han sido testigos mudos del ahorcamiento de un animal en plena via publica por un guardian del orden "sereno", si este tipo de gente es la que nos cuida?? que podemos esperar?? Si permitimos este tipo de actos en algun lugar por alejado que este entonces somos complices....complices de una sociedad que no protege a sus integrantes sean humanos, animales, fauna, flora, medio ambiente... de una sociedad que esta condenanda a la destruccion el dia que aprendamos la leccion y pongamos firmeza ante tanto atropello..... ese dia quiza nuestro futuro cambie
