Petition to change City of Wichita’s rabies vaccinations requirements from annually to tri-ann

Target:
Dog Owners in Wichita, KS City Limits

Whereas major veterinary schools and the American Animal Hospital Association recommend that most major canine vaccines should be given once every three years

Whereas unnecessary rabies vaccination can have adverse affects such as autoimmune diseases affecting the thyroid, joints, blood, eyes, skin, kidney, liver, bowel and central nervous system; anaphylactic shock; aggression; seizures; epilepsy; and fibrosarcomas at injection sites are linked to rabies vaccinations

Whereas studies show no difference in compliance between cities requiring the vaccine annually and those requiring the vaccine every 3 years.

We, the undersigned hereby petition the City Council to amend City Ordinace 47-695, Sec. 6.05.130 Rabies Vaccination Requirement  from every 12 months to every 36 months.

Ord. No. 47-695
Sec. 6.04.130  Rabies vaccination required.

The owner of any dog over five months of age maintained or harbored at any time in the city shall have such dog vaccinated against rabies each twelve months (change to 36 months) with an approved vaccine administered by a veterinarian, who shall maintain a record of vaccination for a period of at least two (Change to four) years, and who shall issue the owner of the dog a vaccination certificate. The owner shall retain such certificate until the vaccination is renewed.

My cat's are my children, and in order to comply with annual vaccinations for rabies, their lives are being placed in danger.

Vaccinating our pets helps make our community safer, but it should not be done at the expense of our pets. We should be keeping our pets safe, too!

Stop the nonsence and drop the requirement for pet owners to have to get yearly rabie vaccinations!!! While your at it, make the complete pet registration a yearly requirement. It's bullshit for the city to have to gouge us every year!!!

If there is no added benefit to an annual vaccination to a 3 year vaccination, why do it annually? Every 3 years should be enough. We would not do this to a human, why would we do this to our pets?

My dog Titus has newly diagnosed lymphoma. I would like to think that his shots hasn't caused this.

You know? I never really thought about my Ladybugs' sudden death at a young age being due to vaccinations. She was sick one day, treated by the vet and gone the next. Our hearts are still broken. Since we had no idea what caused this, we had her sent to the Vet college in Wichita for an autopsy and they discovered that all the internal organs were in mint condition except for the kidneys. They claim both her kidneys were gone. This really upset the both of us as we knew we had taken excellent care of her as well as we had given her all the love a pet could possibly want or ask for. She was the most beautiful black/tan Dachsund you ever laid eyes on. We wondered if possibly we had done something wrong. My condolences go out to everyone that loses their pets-ours are like children too. Anyhow-more power to the lab workers and hope they can come up with something to prevent this in the future. Thank you guys for being caring and loving people.

I do not or will not have a dog, but I have lost 2 cats, both Maine Coons, to vaccine related fibrosarcoma at the injeciton site due to the feline rabies vaccine. The health professionals and city need to be held accountable for this. I no longer give the rabies vaccine as my pets are indoors only. I had them both to K-State and was given the same prognosis, the disease was too far along to help them and I would no allow my girls to become guinea pigs in research!

My dog just happen to come up with a liver problem after her 8th year of having rabies booster. The people who don't vaccinate their dogs should not affect the responsible pet owners who care about and vaccinate their pets. It is our pets who are paying for this. Would you poison your child with booster shots? Would you care about your child's life being shortened? Enough said, that is how RESPONSIBLE pet owners feel about our animals!

Please stop the requirement for the annual vaccination when it has proven that the yearly vaccination is not necessary. Our animals health depends on it.

Being a Holistic Animal Care Provider and Instructor I know all too well the dangers of giving vaccines period. The administering of yearly vaccines to our companion animals is based on myth and is not backed by scientific data. Administering vaccines to any animal (human or non-human) only perpetuates chronic disease. Since canine rabies has been eradicated in the U.S since 2003, the rabies vaccine need only be given (if it continues to be a government mandate) once in an animals life time.

It is a fact that the three year rabies vaccination serum is exactly the same as the one year rabies vaccination serum. There is also growing evidence that over vaccinating our animals is causing many serious problems such as autoimmune disease, which is ALWAYS fatal, it is just a matter of time. I believe that we are the guardian of our pets health and well being and as such, it is necessary to look at all the new medical evidence and not just keep blindly following "what was". Our animals deserve a long HEALTHY life, not a life dictated by arcane ideas and laws.

I'm really tired of putting poison into my dogs because the laws say we have to. They are now doing studies to show that the 1 year shot you are giving the dogs (which is actually good for 3 years) now have done investigation to prove that it is good for at least 7-8 years. We are over vacinating our dogs and are causing a lot of very dangerous health problems.

With the amazing amount of money Americans are now spending on their pets surely Veterinarians don't need this little bit of income at the expense of our "best friends"

If you have not familiarized yourself with the works of Dr. Ron Schultz from the University of Wisconsin, I would highly recommend you do. Dr. Schultz did the double blind study on rabies vaccines which caused the American Veterinary Medical Association to adopt new recommendations regarding boostering rabies. It has been determined that yearly vaccinations is not in the best interest of the animals' health and that there is data which not only suggests, but presents proof the immunity will last at LEAST 3(three) years. The studies also showed significant health damage to the annually vaccinated animals. Another well known authority is Dr. W. Jean Dodds. Her research is most enlightening as well. Please read the overwhelming evidence presented to the AVMA

We lost one precious, young, healthy dog to AIHA -- auto-immune hemolytic anemia -- suspiciously attributable to over-vaccination. There has been no other explanation for her sudden death. We also lost another beloved pet to a sudden tumor at a vaccination site. Our dogs go outside only with supervision and have a privacy-fenced yard. They absolutely DO NOT need and cannot continue to have rabies vaccinations every year simply because decisionmakers are ignorant of the dangers of over-stimulation of the immune system.

I am really worried about my pets. They are nearly 9 years old and have had their shots regularly. People don't get shots every year. We just get tetnus every 5 years or what ever. I think it was a cash cow for vets. Please tell me it isn't so. I would hate to think that I put my pets in danger. Thanx

Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, federal government agencies, and most veterinarians advise that current anti-rabies vaccines are effective for at least 3 years and that more frequent use can injure health and shorten life. Your proposal for yearly vaccination, while I'm sure is well-intentioned, has the effect of injuring the pets of law-abiding citizens while doing nothing to vaccinate those that are strays or owned by citizens who are not law-abiding. Please reconsider. Dr. Robert Procter Topeka, KS

We want the community safe, but we also want our pets protected from over immunizations. It's not fair to punish responsible pet owners for the actions of irresponsible ones, and it doesn't work. They're less likely to get the shots every year due to cost than every 3 years.

I'm tired of the multitude of health problems my dogs develop every single year after receiving their rabies vaccination. There are plenty of studies supporting the fact that tri-annual rabies vaccinations are sufficient in keeping our community safe from rabies. Please quit punishing the responsible pet owner with this unnecessary practice.

After spending over five thousand dollars trying to save my beautiful Aussie mix from an Auto Immune disease from over vaccinations I respectfully ask that this outdated law be changed to trinaual vaccination instead of yearly. Numerus studies have shown what over vaccinating our pets is doing. It is time to change this outdated law.

It has already been proven the vaccines are good for more than a year so why subject our pets to over vaccination that could cause such devastating health problems for the rest of their lives!!!
