Secret photo taken of Taiji slaughter.

Tell Broome to help stop the dolphin slaughter

Target:
Get the Broome Shire Council to use it's influence to help stop the dolphin slaughter taking place in Taiji, Japan

Broome, in Western Australia is the sister city to Taiji in Japan.

Taiji slaughters thousands of dolphins on a yearly basis, hiding the truth of the horror from onlookers by threatening violence, covering the slaughter area with tarps and polluting the water with sudsy foam to cover the flow of blood.  The dolphin meat ends up in supermarkets even though the world has won battles against dolphins being injured during tuna harvests.

Mr Graeme Campbell of the Broome Shire Council has dismissed these actions as cultural considerations stating that Australian's did the same thing slaughtering dugong and turtles (see newspaper article at:

http://www.thewest.com.au/default.aspx?MenuID=77&ContentID=112309 )

This petition is designed to show Mr Campbell and the remaining members of the Broome Shire Council that we feel it is unacceptable to turn your back on  the slaughter of these magnificent animals simply for the sake of a financial benefit.  This type of thinking not only shows Australian's in a poor light, but undermines our opposition to the Japanese whaling fiasco.

Mr Campbell, please exhert pressure on your sister city government representatives to stop this slaughter or you will severe ties with Taiji until such time as they consider their actions unacceptable, and change their ways.

If you want to personally contact the Broome Shire Council in regard to this issue, please send them a letter at:

We the undersigned request that the  Broome Shire Council consider severing their ties with Taiji, Japan, their sister city, unless Taiji stops the unneccessary yearly slaughter of dolphins.

We understand that there a economical considerations that come with this decision, but hope that the importance of this issue and the preservation of the majestic animals involved will outweigh all other issues.

We thank you for taking the time to read this letter and considering this issue.

Dolphin Slaughter should never be an option- I am appalled at photos of slaughtered dolphins I am seeing. I can't believe this is happening. Please put an end to this before I lose every ounce of respect for you people.

The dolphin has been a constant positive motif through all human civilisations. They are self aware, they are intelligent and they actively seek human contact. How many times have you heard of a story of a dolphin protecting and maybe even saving a human life? How do we repay these remarkable beings? By capturing them and training them for our entertainment, or, even worse, killing them for profit. From September through to march, dolphins are terrified by a wall of sound created by fishing boats, they almost literally swim for their lives. They are herded into a secret cove that is heavily guarded. There, they are trapped. Their babies are taken away from them, put into a separate closed off area. Dolphin trainers from around the world then come and choose some show worthy dolphins. Each of these dolphins are worth $154,000. This is basically a reward for what those fishermen are doing. A live dolphin is worth $154,000. A dead dolphin, however, for it's meat is worth $500. Once the elite dolphins have been chosen, it is then time for the unworthy to be disposed of. The babies are killed in front of their parents, and inhumanity in any culture. They are killed brutally, either by slitting their throats or by harpooning them. The dolphins, when the slaughter starts, are aware that that is their fate. They know they are going to die. Not only is this brutal, their meat is sold on the market. The legal amount of mercury in any fish meat fit for human consumption is 4 ppm (parts per million), whereas dolphin meat has approximately 2000ppm of mercury, a toxic amount for humans. This is endangering the Japanese population with mercury poisoning. I urge you to sever your ties with Taijin. This act is wrong. It is inhumane. If you cannot do this, try and help alleviate by urging any aquariums to try and raise awareness of this. Even for dolphins in captivity. Dolphins can commit suicide. If their life becomes too stressful, they can refuse food or they can batter themselves to death against the walls of their prison. Or, most heartbreakingly of all, they can drown themselves. Every breath they take is a concious effort. They have to rise to the surface. For us humans, our breathing is involuntary. For dolphins, it is voluntary. They can simply not go up for air, or they can breathe in the water and drown. Please, help these magnificent creatures.

I stongly hope Broome Shire Council gets it's act together and influences Japan to stop the slaughter of dolphins and pilot whales. I always thought Australia was a caring country......... We are upsetting the balance of nature. Japan has a habit of telling everybody what to do, and we let them do it.......... what's wrong with us........NO BACK BONE

IT IS WAY PAST TIME TO BE A HUMAN BEING HELPING THE ANIMALS OF THIS PLANET......"If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men..." ~ St. Francis of Assisi, Roman Catholic friar, founder of the Franciscans order "Compassion for animals is intimately connected with goodness of character and it may be confidently asserted that he who is cruel to animals cannot be a good man." ~ Arthur Schopenhauer, German Philosopher "Love of animals is a universal impulse, a common ground on which all of us may meet. By loving and understanding animals, perhaps we humans shall come to understand each other." ~ Dr. Louis J. Camuti, first US veterinarian to devote his practice to felines only "He who harms animals has not understood or renounced deeds of sin ... Those whose minds are at peace and who are free from passions do not desire to live at the expense of others." ~ from Acharanga Sutra - Jainism - Non-Vedic Religion of Old India ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Murderers ... very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids." ~ Robert K. Ressler, Former FBI Serial Killer Profiler "If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men..." ~ St. Francis of Assisi, Roman Catholic friar, founder of the Franciscans order "The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them, that's the essence of inhumanity." ~ George Bernard Shaw, Irish Playwright and Essayist "The animal liberation movement is saying that where animals and humans have similar interests - we might take the interest in avoiding physical pain as an example, for it is an interest that humans clearly share with other animals - those interests are to be counted equally, with no automatic discount just because one of the beings is not human." ~ Peter Singer, Australian Animal Activist "Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages." ~ Thomas Edison, American Inventor and Scientist "Compassion for animals is intimately connected with goodness of character and it may be confidently asserted that he who is cruel to animals cannot be a good man." ~ Arthur Schopenhauer, German Philosopher "We have enslaved the rest of animal creation and have treated our distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were to formulate a religion, they would depict the Devil in human form." ~ William Ralph Inge, British Author "Living with animals can be a wonderful experience, especially if we choose to learn the valuable lessons animals teach through their natural enthusiasm, grace, resourcefulness, affection and forgiveness." ~ Richard H. Pitcairn, American Veterinarian, Pet Nutritionist and Author

It's time for all this to stop. It's time for us to be good stewards of the oceans because the health of the oceans is critical to the health of all life on the planet. No more collaborating with the devil and giving the Japanese a pass on whaling and dolphin killing. Let's make it stop by cutting off all the money, in all forms from all sources, to Japan. If they want to do this, it must cost them dearly. If they want to participate in the global economy, it's time for them to stop stabbing us all in the back.
