Tell Broome to help stop the dolphin slaughter

  • by: An outraged Australian citizen
  • recipient: Get the Broome Shire Council to use it's influence to help stop the dolphin slaughter taking place in Taiji, Japan

Broome, in Western Australia is the sister city to Taiji in Japan.

Taiji slaughters thousands of dolphins on a yearly basis, hiding the truth of the horror from onlookers by threatening violence, covering the slaughter area with tarps and polluting the water with sudsy foam to cover the flow of blood.  The dolphin meat ends up in supermarkets even though the world has won battles against dolphins being injured during tuna harvests.

Mr Graeme Campbell of the Broome Shire Council has dismissed these actions as cultural considerations stating that Australian's did the same thing slaughtering dugong and turtles (see newspaper article at:

http://www.thewest.com.au/default.aspx?MenuID=77&ContentID=112309 )

This petition is designed to show Mr Campbell and the remaining members of the Broome Shire Council that we feel it is unacceptable to turn your back on  the slaughter of these magnificent animals simply for the sake of a financial benefit.  This type of thinking not only shows Australian's in a poor light, but undermines our opposition to the Japanese whaling fiasco.

Mr Campbell, please exhert pressure on your sister city government representatives to stop this slaughter or you will severe ties with Taiji until such time as they consider their actions unacceptable, and change their ways.

We the undersigned request that the  Broome Shire Council consider severing their ties with Taiji, Japan, their sister city, unless Taiji stops the unneccessary yearly slaughter of dolphins.

We understand that there a economical considerations that come with this decision, but hope that the importance of this issue and the preservation of the majestic animals involved will outweigh all other issues.

We thank you for taking the time to read this letter and considering this issue.
