STOP THE LOS ANGELES SONIC POLLUTION

STOP THE SONIC POLLUTION

Target:
Mayor Villareigosa, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, United States Congress, Larry King
Sponsored by:
I am calling attention to another dimension of pollution, SONIC POLLUTION. The Los Angeles residents are being assaulted on a daily basis by sonic pollution. Loud motorcycles and automobiles pass by our children's sensitive ears roaring barbarically. Our discussions while sitting at an open air balcony restaurant are brutally interrupted disrespecting our human rights and the continuous improvement of our ecology. Sound awareness is increasing all over the world in European countries. Today in the 21st century a good amount of Americans use exhaustion pipes to increase the sound level of their motorcycles and automobiles, as they pass trough our neighborhoods. I suggest we start a movement here in our backyard and rapidly aim for a law that measures and prohibits the circulation of automobiles (including buses) and motorcycles that pass a certain level of decibels.  If we have laws that require a smoke check every year why not require a decibel check? The laugh of a child immediately transforms into a cry, dogs annoyed start barking and the bird's singing is overshadowed by monstrous noises passing trough our neighborhood.  God has given the human race a gift, that of eternal knowledge. Let's slowly start recognizing that knowledge within each and one of us and then firmly use it to our advantage, that of making the Los Angeles environment a cleaner and safer place.

We're having the same problem in my town. I can't go to a park to relax without being assaulted by audio terrorism from exhausts or subwoofers booming. I haven't been to a funeral without the sound coming through the walls. There is NO WHERE I can go in the town that is truly quiet. My constitutional rights are being violated every day. I'd be outside enjoying nice weather, but I tend to isolate because it's like living at a rap concert in the middle of a NASCAR track. We can no longer hear the sounds of nature. This has really become a major issue in my life and the quality of living has been drastically reduced for me.

The noise interferes with others ... conversations must halt until the motorcycle, bus, etc. has passed. It's not right.

It has already been proved that the excess of loud noise can affect our hearing in ways to accelerate our natural process of loss of our hearing habilities. I have no intention of growing deaf before I'm naturally supposed to. In addition to that and considering the world that we live in and how fast life is now, I think momments of peace and calm are pretty rare. We MUST do something so we won't lose this rare momments because of the noise. It is a real problem.

I am in disbelief that pollution from all forms of modern combustion carbon-spewing is not regulated. Un-burned hydrocarbons and complex toxic combustion effluent and cacophonic sounds tossed - willingly and/or un-wittingly - into the air that humans and other life-forms depend on - by offroaders, air handlers, (compressors, space conditioning, leaf blowers, et al) , car racers, souped-up small planes, news helicopters, mining, construction, landscaping power equipment, and each other - in recent modern past - unprecedented as never before. I forsee some fool lingering trait manifesting in a sound system plaguing a coastal town on their legal hydrogen hybred 'Goldwing', speakers blaring a retro 'turbo harley' sample. Simply expanding the 'smog check' of all 'spewers' to include decibel and safety compliance is a no-brainer, win-win.

Legislate enforcement and guidance of 'brotherly love' . It really shouldn't have to come to this.

i live between here and LA and in between both coasts i see the damage noise is doing to this country. people are already on edge and at the end of their rope with noise issues. it's been creating violent situations and it's absolutely unnecessary. it's time people learn that civility and decency are everyones responsibility. we all benefit when it's applied all around.

As a noise sufferer, I experience true physical pain and unhealthy physical reactions to loud noise, especially noise accompanied by the sort of vibrations put out by subwoofers and illegal motorcycle pipes. Proximity to these polluters causes my blood pressure to rise, my heart to race, and my chest to constrict. I know that exposure to this toxin is taking years off my life. It amazes me that a state like California would take such drastic steps to control air and water pollution but allow the motormorons to create as much havoc as they wish on the roads and in the parks, with virtually no enforcement of existing statutes. I beg the LA mayor and Gov. Schwartzenegger to step up to this problem.

We can do this. We can bring noise pollution under control with just a little extra law enforcement because the people who make this noise know they are breaking the law. They have low self-esteem and/or are selfish and brutish and care not one iota for the people they disturb, the physical hurt they cause, the children they wake up or the elderly who cry out in their beds for quiet. I see this every day and I beg you to address this problem.

It doesn't hurt if we all turn all music down a bit while respecting the residence in our community. Please give our ears some rest.

Because there is no point in having a HUGE exhaust pipe just to make the vehicles louder. It's ridiculous and harmful to the environment.

I hope we can stop this ... and I'm hoping that the government will find it in their hearts to do what is right.

Our small town is overrun with cars that have modified/after market mufflers. The police say their hands are tied. There is a noise ordinance but no way to enforce it- that the rights of these kids actually overide our right to peace and quiet as homeowners and taxpayers. This isn't right.

Let's pass some decibel laws now!

This is definitely an area of concern. Let's start in our own homes, and lower the TV commercials too.

As with everything else, if Duh'bya has any say, things will get worse. I finally figured it out, too late, if the American people want it he, Duh'bya, will make sure that we don't get it. Ergo, we should be critical of things and then he'll do what we need.

Loud motorcycles are a plague everywhere now, and it is getting worse. Did you know that motorcycles are not manufactured to be loud, that would be illegal per federal regulations. Owners install illegal mufflers to make more noise than allowed by street legal mufflers. The laws should be strictly enforced so that motorcycles without the EPA label on the muffler receive a ticket, period.

No decibel readers are needed for motorcycle enforcement. Street legal motorcycle mufflers will have a clearly visible EPA label which police can simply look for. EPA Title 40, Part 205, Subpart D (motorcycles) and Subpart E (motorcycle exhaust systems) Subpart D—Motorcycles http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=9d2dcc1c4ab65a26531fdd1d7bf8e83d&rgn=div6&view=text&node=40:24.0.1.2.11.4&idno=40 Subpart E—Motorcycle Exhaust Systems http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr;sid=9d2dcc1c4ab65a26531fdd1d7bf8e83d;rgn=div6;view=text;node=40%3A24.0.1.2.11.5;idno=40;cc=ecfr

Why is this issue important to you?

Could we stop the Sonic Pollution by introducing a regulatory law which requires a decibel check on today's motorcycles and automobiles? How about the exhaustion pipes and their brutal assault on the Los Angeles streets?
