Support for Dr Colin Pfaff

Target:
Department of Health, Kwa Zulu-Natal
Sponsored by:

We fully support the actions taken by Dr Colin Pfaff in providing the dual therapy to HIV positive pregnant women in Manguzi Hospital and its surrounding clinics prior to the announcement of dual therapy as part of the official South African government policy. We believe that Dr Pfaff has demonstrated both courage and leadership in ensuring the best possible care for these women and their babies. In doing so he has reduced the number of babies that would have been infected by at least 50%.  We believe that Dr Pfaff deserves to be highly commended for the excellent work he has been doing to prevent the transmission of the HI virus to so many children.

We believe that he should be commended for his dedicated work.

Given the challenges the public sector has to face, and in particular the PHC, Dr Pfaff's courage is impressive and motivating. He enjoys my full support and deepest sympathies. Dirk Hagemeister

Here in the UK, money is raised by local communities to supplement NHS provision, for example cancer care, terminal care. This is encouraged by the authorities. Dr. Pfaff should be encouraged by the Health Department. He is adding to the number of healthy new South Africans.

Dr Pfaff received support from us in 2001 to support his program on providing life-saving nevirapine to prevent the needless death of infants born to HIV-infected mothers. He is a leader in his own country in recognizing the need for this prevention at a time when the South African government was highly criticized for delays and HIV denailism. He is to be recognized for his overwhelming concern for his patient population and his willingness to do the best even when the government has not fully supported his efforts. It is to be acknowledged that Dr Pfaff's treatment of HIV-infected pregnant women is fully within the standards of the World Health Organization and it is routine treatment in many developed countries but also in developing countries that hold to a high standard of care for its peoples. The Chargers brought against Dr.Pfaff bring shame to the South African government.

I have seen the quality of the workers at Zitulele Hospital and am shocked that any member of that hospital should be regarded in this way

Thousands of babies are infected unnecessarily and I salute Dr Pfaff for having the courage not to stand by but to do something about this. Western Cape has been giving dual therpy for years and no one was hounded, Why Doctor Pfaff, he was using donated drugs and therefore not costing the department anything. He is hust doing what any doctor who has taken the oath to save lives would do.

Dr Pfaff understands the meaning of the word 'doctor'. The South African government should bow their heads in shame in front of an international audience.

Please do not mix Science with Politics. We need more of Dr Pfuff's innovative knowedge and idea to conquer HIV/AIDS pandemic. Jesus was killed simply because he wanted to save life.. AFRICA are you blind? So why are you good in critisizing and blamming than making the differnce? Who are you pleasing? Have you ran out of ideas? Please give me a way... Viva Dr Collin Pfuff viva!

Patients across SA should be getting the best possible treatment. If this is not the goal set by the state, then why do they punish people for having this goal?

If a doctor treats his patients with medicine that benefit them and the total community, it is a shame that the state wants to charge him for not using their protocol

I wholeheartedly support Dr. Colin Pfaff in the initiative he has taken. I was born at Manguzi Hospital 30 years, and returned in 2006. Although I didn't get to meet Colin, he arranged for someone to meet me and I was inspired and encouraged to see the dedication and commitment shown by the doctors and staff there.

I hope the effort spent in victimising Dr Plaff can now be spent in furthering what is now, belatedly, official Government policy. Dr Plaff is a leader in the full sense of the word. Congratulations.

Admiring your innovation in a rural hospital to treat pregnant women with dual therapy! Pray that many doctors may follow your example to prevent HIV transmission. May the government wake up and support you! I have worked in a rural area in South Africa in the past and can more or less imagine what your going through! May God bless you!
