The White House Organic Farm Recipe

Who will work the farm?

Public school children and disabled Americans will work the White House Organic Farm, setting an example for the world of hands-on learning and an independent, do-it-yourself work ethic.

Who will eat the food?

The White House Organic Farm%u2019s harvest will provide fresh local produce for the President, the President's family, and the President%u2019s distinguished guests.  It will also support healthy school lunch programs and supply food pantries of Washington, DC.

How will the food be transported?

Food from the White House Organic Farm will be delivered to local public schools and food pantries by volunteers on foot and by bicycle.

What about the soil?

The White House Organic Farm will use healthy topsoil, nourished by compost supplements from yard and food waste from the White House grounds and from the US Capitol's cafeteria.

What about the seeds?

The farm will plant heirloom seeds passed down from Thomas Jefferson's farm at Monticello as well as seeds donated by farmers and gardeners everywhere, to celebrate both the rich agricultural traditions of the Office of the President and the passions of everyday Americans for our great land.

It would be a great example. Don't let Cuba be the leader in organic agriculture.

Food is the issue around the world. A creative leader who understands what's happening and CARES, has the perfect opportunity to make a difference by creating an organic garden on "Our White House Lawn".

We're about to get some new faces in the White House. Either way the election goes in November, we're going to get someone who claims to care about the environment and conservation. Here's an opportunity for the new President to show that he is actually committed to this.

I strongly believe that organic food should be available to everyone, and no longer 'elitist' like it is now!

Our great nation needs a more sustainable way of eating. What better way to do this than to have the White House set the example!

Lawns are symbols of waste, pollution and isolation. In a time of world food crisis, global warming and the need to build stronger and healthier local communities, the White House should found a model edible estate in place of its lawn.

Respectfully this organic farm should also be vegetarian--no animals should be exploited, tortured or killed!!People do not need meat to survive and it should be treated like cigerettes--here in Canada cigerettes can only be sold from behind solid cabinets--out of sight-out of mind--that is what should be happening with meat--slowly it should be taken out of the normal person's diet--it would make a huge impact on lessening the obesity and diabetes that plagues the nation and its workforce!!

As a proud member of the officially unofficial resurgence of the Victory Garden movement, I heartily support this idea. Home agriculture is a pleasant solution to many very unpleasant problems: soil degradation by factory farming, pollution and high cost of shipping food, loss of biodiversity in plant varieties and food animals, etc. Isn't it time the White House started to lead by example? Farms are beautiful and you can't eat lawn!

A sustainable organic farm combined with a great chef will set a great example for all Americans that we can eat food that tastes better, is better for us and better for the planet.

We need more lean, organic pig meat for yummy tummies and national security. A nation that eats good pig shall long prosper. I think Jefferson may've said that. I know it wasn't Washington. Could've been Madison.

The White House should be a model for American society- to connect with the foods we eat and the products we use. I hope you please send the American people this message through the White House Organic Farm Project.

A small organic garden on the White House lawn will encourage not only responsible, local gardens on our on soil, but imagine the impact it will have on leaders from all over the world after they dine on produce grown organically in the front yard of America's most famous, and powerful home. It's more than an empty symbolic gesture. It's a simple act that can change the way popular culture views home gardening and organic farming. It's the type of exposure major companies and multi-national brands spend millions (if not billions) to obtain. And it can be done with minimal effort and money. Rarely do we find such an easy way to impact society in such big way. Call it a Victory Garden. Consider it an homage to America's agricultural heritage. Whichever way you want to spin the garden, just do it. Thank you for your time, Carl Cobitt Boulder, Colorado

Portland has a Tour De Coops every year. Chickens are everywhere, with some of the most beautiful coops imaginable. The Easter celebration would be better with eggs from on site. Also, corn grown on-site would be great for Thanksgiving. A cherry tree for the George Washington story? The possibilities are interesting to contemplate.

Imagine a White house address coming with a cow mooing in the background. Last time I went to the White House, I was a kid, and I was impressed that it was big and beautiful. Now, with life experience, I can think about this petition with knowledge about the difference between a picture landscape and a farm/garden where humans interact with plants and soil. I agree that organic farming at the White House would be leading by example. It would also be an opportunity to bring to the surface many of the issues of trying to live a healthy lifestyle in our modern urban environment. You can't be fully human and disconnected with the Earth.

Just like I do at my own home, the lawn size at the White House should be reduced and used to grow food to sustain those who live, work, and eat there.
