Stop the unfair taxation of Domestic Partnership healthcare benefits

Target:
The United States Congress
Sponsored by:
It seems as if marriage rights for same-sex couples is going to continue to be a fight. Many states already have gay marriage bans in their constitution, and that list continues to grow.  Unfortunatly.

However, private organizations realize that in order to attract the best labor force they must offer equal rights.  Many companies today offer their gay employees the ability to apply for same-sex healthcare benefits.

The problem is the government currently taxes domestic partnership healthcare benefits as income. This is unfair as millions of same-sex couples do not have the right to get married.

This issue often causes gay people to enter into a higher tax bracket.

Opposite Sex married couples do not pay income tax on their healthcare benefits.

There are over 1400 federal benefits that same sex couples can't obtain. This is merely one of them.

Fiscal Conservatives claim that high on their agenda is lower taxation.  Social Liberals claim that high on their agenda is equality and fairness.
This petition brings together both goals for common good of mankind.

We the undersigned request that you stop the unfair taxation of Domestic Partnership Healthcare benefits.

Private organizations realize that offering Domestic Partnership Healthcare benefits is crucial for attracting and retaining quality employees.

Today, the Federal Government taxes these benefits as regular earned income.  This is not the case for straight married couples.

This issue also causes some gay people to enter into a higher tax bracket just for supporting and caring for their partner.  This truly causes inequality in the workplace as the W2 of a gay individual will report a higher income then their straight peers.

Thank you for taking time to read this letter.  We have faith that you will execute with fairness and equality on this very important issue.

I am on staff at the MacArthur Foundation, which provides free health benefits to spouses and partners of Foundation staff. This is an expensive plan because it covers almost everything. However, my straight colleagues don't have to pay tax on this expensive plan because the state lets them marry. I, on the other hand, pay a great deal of federal income tax because the state will not let me legally marry my partner. His coverage is considered "imputed income." I can't afford this level of taxation, but I also cannot allow my partner to go uninsured. So basically I am paying the federal government a tax for being gay.

Why is this issue important to you? As my partner (of 22 years) and I get older, we are trying to set up our finances to minimize the death tax issues that will impact us far more than a straight couple. I am aware that there will be serious financial reprecussions when one of us dies. It isn't right.

As a young, homosexual male, it is my belief that the overturning of unfair taxation practices aimed at gay relationships should be one of the nation's top priorities. If this country is going to deny us adequate protections under marriage, then it seems reasonable to expect more equality with regards to taxation policies.

Taxing the health care benefits is not only unfair but absolutely ridiculous. Some partners already have children, the family needs health benefits not added stress, worrying about how to pay higher taxes. This taxing does not encourage stability nor family support. It really would be a shame if children who need homes were left unadopted because the potential parents could not afford to provide for their medical care. Sounds alittle prejudice to me!

I can't believe that the government can get away with this...What's next? We have to pay taxes for the air that we breathe? Oh, yeah, but straight people won't have to.

Str8 people get married just to get benefits, but committed, loving gay couples who have been together for years, stood by and protected one another through thick and thin, good times and bad, can't have the same rights? That is ridiculous! Why should straight people get all the perks?

This is a very important issue to me because I am one of those gay people that are denied the same rights as my straight friends.

we are all humans and need to be treated the same. I like vanilla ice cream and fortunately for me, am not subject to any special tax because of my preference which doesn't hurt or impact anyone. RElationship status is a personal choice and we need to stop penalizing people for their sexual preferences and how they choose to lead their personal ives

I absolutley agree that the rights of partnerships are denied. If straight people in marriage situations don't have to pay taxes, neither should partnerships. They deserve equal rights under the law.

Why should a gay couple in a loving relationship and impacting no others be taxed unfairly in comparison to their heterosexual counterparts? It is time for change.

Because unless we are recognized as partners in union, we should not be taxed as partners in union.
