Add your name to let Vermont's Senators and Representatives know that you support the "3-Foot Rule" stating that a passing motor vehicle must give at least 3-feet of clearance to a bicycle. I am a Vermont voter and support the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition sponsored "3-Foot Rule" law that: Defines a safe passing distance of at least 3' for a vehicle passing a bicycle; Ensures that vehicles leave room for cyclists when turning right; Allows cyclists to use left and center lanes for turning; Allows bicycles to pass stopped vehicles on the right at their own risk.

I commute to work about 8 months of the year. there is a stretch of road which is heavily travelled by 14,000 cars a day and many cyclists. We only have a one foot fog line and 5 storm drains which are surrounded by deep holes where the asphalt is gone. I have organized a group and we have been fighting with the AOT to create a bike lane. If we had a law the AOT would have to comply and we would be safer. Right now the more tentative bikers are afraid to move away from the storm drains and try to ride over them. Others like myself ride about five feet from the curb as the cars speed by.

I bike commute 17 miles each way on a daily basis from May through October. Most VT motorists are very courteous, but at least once a day some driver demonstrates there might by crowding the bike lane regardless of on coming traffic. As vehicles have increased in breadth over the past few years -- bike lane crowding has increased and riding has become more dangerous.

important innitiative not only for Vermont. Automobiles threaten cyclists and pedestrians all the time everywhere on this planet that has accepted automobiles as the primary way to get around. Many drivers are insensitive to the needs of cyclists and walkers. Good luck to all of us who can only dream of cycling on safe streets.

I am a regular cyclist, that travels to Vermont a few times a year. I have been scared by car drivers (and trucks and buses) that come too close to me on the road (sometimes a few inches). I do leave at least 3 feet when I overtake a cyclist when I am driving a car and think it is just natural as the cyclist is so fragile.

If you adopt this law, it will be easier to adopt the equivalent here in Québec.

I was once hit from behind, on my shoulder, by a car that came too close. Need I say more?

One meter is three feet and is enough.

In VT it is very dangerous when drivers pass you on the left and give you no room. If a pothole is straight ahead, you really have no choice put to hit it or jump up on the curb. This has happened to me a handful of times commuting on my bike and is totally preventable by this rule.

Please make this law hsppen. I was hit by a motorist last Fall. Anything that will force motorists (including myself when I am one) to be mindful and share the road with cyclists is a great move!

With increasing gas prices, more bicycles are on the roads. Safety should be of utmost importance. This rule will help in that effort.

Bicycle riders should be encouraged to ride on the "public highways" of our state.

I am a year-round bicycle commuter as well as road cyclist for enjoyment. Daily I encounter motorists who appear to be unaware of the risks that they pose to cyclists, either by passing too closely, making right-hand turns without looking first or expressing their frustration with cyclists' rate of travel by driving aggressively.

Twice swiped by the side view mirror of passing vehicles, one incident resulting in a nasty crash. The 3' law could be a life saver.

36" will be enough if it's enforced and carries a real penalty.
